I'm glad you fucker got subsciption to HBO. Now is the time to learn to reference properly who you cite. BTW, I thought this week's main "new rule" by Bill Maher was pretty good. Doesn't happen every episode unfortunately.9/10/2005 7:10:39 PM |

What is the point of this? The admin wasn't contractors to be able to pay workers below min. wage in the areas affected by Katrina. 9/11/2005 2:14:38 AM |

it would lower the cost of rebuilding the devastated areas, so they could do more work for less, and spend more on materials 9/11/2005 2:21:13 AM |

Lower the cost, at what cost? Promoting poverty?
I can't see how someone can reasonably pay someone else less than 5.75/hour to do the kind of work it's going to take to rebuild in that area. 9/11/2005 2:25:21 AM |

i dont know, it could probably open up job opportunities to those in the area that can't work anywhere else....either because they didnt have a job to start with, or cannot return to work right now. The construction contractors could hire more workers at a lower pay rate, rather than less workers with a higher rate. You've got thousands of individuals down there right now who don't have any income whatsoever. Less than min. wage is not glamorous by any means, but it is better than nothing. 9/11/2005 2:39:38 AM |

That's like the wage form of price-gouging though, isn't it?

This has some history behind the Davis-Bacon Act that Bush is suspending. Turns out the Davis-Bacon Act was passed in 1931 for discriminatory purposes.
^ Not necessarily. Wouldn't supply and demand still work in the labor markets there?
Oh, yeah. The Davis-Bacon Act is NOT the minimum wage. Bush is NOT trying to suspend minimum wage in LA, AL, FL and MS.

According to Salary.com, the median base pay for a general laboror in New Orleans is $11.71/hr not including benefits. That would be the prevailing wage. All Bush did was say that construction contractors can pay their workers anywhere between minimum wage and what they would be paid if times were good. 9/11/2005 5:37:28 PM |
