The fair gound guys sells swarovski crystal.... You can get it a lot cheaper there if people are looking for it. He's inside. I bought a bracelet and earrings from him for 35 bucks. Can't beat it.

The crystal is actually real. I took it to a reputable jewelry store to check... And just an FYI... the guy at the fair owns two jewelry stores in Chapel Hill and Raleigh and a permanent booth at the inside of the fair grounds so keep thinking that even though you overpay. hahah

The deal with the crystals is this- (posted for Act of God)

The (overpriced) bead shops in raleigh where a lot of folks who make their own jewlery go charge quite a lot for these beads sometimes, and the market that buys there doesnt know any better. Alternatively, there are a few kinds of those beads that are worth a couple bucks each (these however tend to be very different types of things, one that comes to mind is a square bead that had about 7 crystals in it to make a flower, but even still it was like $1.50)

People then make the jewlery and mark it up pretty heavilly sometimes, because they can, and because they're getting screwed on the materials. And because it's popular and some yuppie prep who wants to be fashionable will pay that much for it.

For whatever reason, the trend as of late seems to be folks wanting $texas for "handmade" jewlery.

Now that's not to say that some pieces aren't nice, or that there isn't skill involved in knowing how to make things well so they stay together, but it seems to be the new "fashionable" thing in some circles to do this.
