I'm sure if you've heard of the guy, but my wife and I are trying to pay off our student loans and car loans by next winter. We're trying to get rid of things that we haven't used in a while. If you want anything, PM me and we'll discuss.

It is all with me. I am not planning on coming up to NC in the next few days, and it'd have to be a really great price for me to drive to NC just to drop this off (that is, if someone wanted something and wanted to wait until I'm in NC again, that's up to them).

I hope that answers the question.

My wife and I are planning on coming up to Raleigh in April, that is, if I'm not out to sea.

why even post this? you know that 90% of people on this site are in raleigh and the other 10% are scattered across the Globe. All of this stuff isn't even worth shipping to NC or waiting till april for.

You should either post this in mid-late march or put it on a local craigslist.

Dave Ramsey is a financial guru who suggests that you carry pretty much no debt whatsoever.

I hate him with my heart in soul but he has quite a large following.

Dave Ramsey - http://www.daveramsey.com/etc/cms/about_us_2932.htmlc

He's a guy who was making a ton of money when he was younger, but then had a terrible time with debt. He ended up losing everything, then he tried to figure out "how money worked." He changed his view of money and debt, was successful at it, and is now trying to help people break the cycle of living as a slave to creditors.

My wife and I aren't "slaves" to creditors like some people; the only debt we have is our car and student loans. We're on a budget and paying almost $800 a month to pay off our car loan. With what we are planning, we are going to be completely debt free (no credit cards, car loans, student loans) at the end of 2008. That would have us paying $27,000 off in less than two years.

Getting rid of this stuff is part of that.

Why do you hate him David?

Well, I've never read anything of his, but I've heard a lot about him and it was my understanding that he was againts nearly all debt.

For example, lets say he wanted to buy a car for 15K. If he could afford to do so I think he would go out and buy the car with no financing. I on the otherhand, would gladly get a car loan at 6.25 % and invest that 15K in the market. There are too many people out there paying extra towards their mortgages, student loans, etc etc etc when they should be saving for retirement. Obviously if you have credit card bills at 19% you should pay them off first, but it doesn't make much sense if you have loans with low aprs.

Okay, I'll ignore that you said you hate him with you heart in soul and never read anything of his. He is against all debt. My understanding (and I have read him) is that he wants your money to be yours and he is frustrated at people who think debt is something that they will always live with. He believes that if you get out of debt as fast as you can, you have much more time to make (and use) money.

For instance, my wife and I are planning on being "debt free" by the end of next year. I'm getting a $1000/month raise in June, that that is worked into the plan (I'm in the Navy. If I don't die or get arrested, I'm getting the raise.) Right now we have two debts we are paying off: a $14,500 car loan, and an $11,000 student loan. We are paying $800/month off for the car loan and the minimum of $175/month off for the student loan. In June, we'll put an extra $500/month into the car loan and be paying $1300/month. That loan will be paid off in Feb of 2008, then all of that $1300 plus the $175 we are paying right now will be going to pay off the student loan. That loan will be paid off in August 2008 (or around there). Then, we'll have $1475/month extra to do whatever we want with.

So, how much money would I have made if I would have paid only the minimum on both loans and put that extra money into a retirement account for a year and a half (while still owing who-knows-how-much on the loans)? The loans wouldn't be paid off for 4-8 years. Instead, we're getting rid of our debt so we can keep the money we make instead of giving it to some bank.

Call me crazy, but my money is mine and I want to do with it whatever I want, not what the bank wants.

Dave Ramsey has a simple plan on his website. Here's the link to the PDF file:

What are the % of your loans?

Can you write off the student loan interest come tax time?

Once you get a mortgage do you plan on paying extra every year if possible?

That doesn't make any sense. Lets say you have debt and want to retire in 30 years. If you start saving now you can invest and have compound interest for 30 years. If you wait 2 years to start, you lose 2 years of compounding and you only invest for 28 years. 30 > 28

If I can borrow money at 4% and invest it and get 10% returns then doesn't it make sense to keep the extra debt. Fuck, you could get >4% returns in a cd if your next reply was going to be about how 10% returns aren't a sure thing.

We can make a Dave Ramsey thread in TSB if you want to talk about this further (I don't mind). I'm just trying to sell some stuff right now.

both loans are >4%
yes, but it isn't much and only if I itemize
yes
true, but I would be paying for the debt and trying to put a little away for retirement for the next two years, instead of having no debt and putting a lot away for retirement in two years

what will give me more money:
$50/month for the next two years and then stop ($1200), compounding for the next five, or
waiting two years, and then putting $1500 away, stopping, then compounding for the next five
$1200<$1500

Is right, but it's a lot more difficult to manage and a pain in the ass.
I still got 75 on the bike
