Group Wants Demonstrators To Sleep In City Park
Quote : | "A protest group planning to bring an expected 50,000 anti-war demonstrators to Denver for the Democratic National Convention might hopes to pitch tents in City Park.
The group called 'Tent State University' has an assembly permit from the city for the southwest corner of the park to have college students from across the country gather Aug. 24-28.
The city said the permit is for 'approximately 20,000 participants,' the Rocky Mountain News reported. Chief Tent State organizer Adam Jung said he dreams of luring up to 50,000 protesters.
The only problem is overnight camping is illegal in City Park.
Organizers are hopeful that negotiations with city officials will allow the group to camp overnight at the park." |

From the Tent State University Web site:
Why We're Protesting
Quote : | "The Democratic Party has refused to stop this war. For nearly a year and a half they have had the numbers to stop funding the slaughter of our boys and girls and innocent Iraqis and have offered only token gestures.
Once before, in our parents and grandparents time, this nation marched blindly into an unjustified bloody war. Then, as now, the Democratic Party lost the will to stand up for peace, and now, as then, the children of this nation had to force their hand. We did not ask for this pattern to repeat itself, nor do we wish to recreate it, but to end it.
This is our generation's obligation. We appreciate the work of our elders, veterans of the battles fought 40 years ago, but we know this war will not end until the youth of this nation, our generation, stand up and say, 'Fuck You! I Won't Do What You Tell Me!' It's our time to lead. It's our obligation to stop this war." |

give me a break. you're a real self-righteous son of a bitch. Just say what you really want, why don't you - that you want Republicans to vote-in a Republican Congress. Don't try to pin it on the Democrat constituency who should hold accountable a congress they voted in for failing to stop a war that you don't even appear to care to stop yourself.
Democrat's obviously are not happy with Congress, shown by their record low approval ratings. But what the hell do you suggest we do about it - vote back in the same assholes that got us into this war, and who won't even pay lip service to the notion of getting us out? yeah, right, that will be much better6/26/2008 9:23:44 AM |

Well, on the one hand, you've got me. I didn't read the links. Of course, there may be a reason why I (and others) don't frequently read your links -- it's because their content is very, very predictable.
Broadly speaking it will be "Democrats are wrong!" Any further detail we can glean from your thread title, caps lock, and bold text.
Quote : | "You think I give a fuck whether you agree with me or not?" |
No, and I don't recall saying anything to that effect. Frankly given the consistency with which I don't, it makes me a bit worried whenever I do.
Quote : | "You're just another one of those guys here who tries to act like he's above it all" |
If by "it all" you mean "making an endless series of forumulaic partisan hack threads," then apparently I'm a pretty goddamn good actor.
Quote : | "And you wonder why some of us don't want to come to your stupid "summits."" |
No, strangely I don't wonder why people with a demonstrable lack of creativity in their ideas and expression don't want to come talk in person. I also don't wonder why Soap Box pariahs don't want to come hang out with Soap Boxers. Lastly I don't wonder why a much older man doesn't want to hang out with a bunch of college students. It would be kind of pathetic if he did.
---
Now, as to the actual protest...
First of all, having perused the website, I'll first say that I have difficulty taking seriously any organization whose motivation appears to be Rage Against the Machine lyrics. Also one whose website is broken in several key places. Long story short, I'll be pretty impressed if they manage the 20,000 they're supposedly bringing, let alone the 50,000 they're trying to bring.
What I could see happening is all of the various protests merging together, being inherently difficult to keep separate, and "Tent State" taking credit for all of them.6/26/2008 2:48:17 PM |

NB: I tried to have civilized dialogue with you and you got shitty. It's becoming clear to the rational thinkers here that users like you are the problem--not me. What I posted is exactly what I think, and I've posted time and again that the Democrats just happen to piss me off more than the Republicans do--it's no more complicated than that.
Quote : | "Well, on the one hand, you've got me. I didn't read the links. Of course, there may be a reason why I (and others) don't frequently read your links -- it's because their content is very, very predictable." |

The links at issue were from a local CBS affiliate and the Tent State University Web site--you know, the source of the topic. If you're not even going to bother to familiarize yourself with the information, why bother to post here? Answer: To be a general shithead while the barking moonbats howl with approval.
I provide more legitimate support for my positions than any of you. If I didn't, you'd bitch about that. As it stands, you bitch about all the support I provide. It's quite clear to me that many of you are going to bitch--and make it personal, since you can't effectively attack the sources--no matter what I do.
Concerning my posting style, it's simply an attempt at effective communication:
Lazy Bastards How we read online.
http://www.slate.com/id/2193552/?GT1=38001
But since you know every goddamned thing, you already know this, right?
Concerning my "endless series of forumulaic [sic] partisan hack threads," they are neither endless (exaggerate much?); formulaic (perhaps in style, but not substance); partisan (what party am I a member of again?); or hackneyed. I would argue that your "partisan hack" bullshit is worse than formulaic--it's clichéd. You really could use some new material.
In any event, no one is forcing you to visit my threads. But your pissy nature compels you to, I suppose.
Concerning my alleged "demonstrable lack of creativity in [my] ideas and expression," I couldn't disagree more. First, you don't know me--you know nothing about me. Yet, you're willing to judge me so quickly? You'd better research me before you accuse me of a lack of creativity--I may have problems, but that's not one of them.
Second, a quick scan of the first five pages of TSB shows zero threads from you--going back over a month. And don't give me any of that quality-versus-quantity bullshit. One would think a self-proclaimed advanced mind such as yours could have come up with some offering during that time. No, you're quite satisfied to simply come shit in a thread someone else has created.
Like far too many Millennials, you've made the unfortunate mistake of believing your own press, Frumpy. I hate to be the one to break it to you: You ain't that great.
Concerning your sense of wonderment about "why a much older man doesn't want to hang out with a bunch of college students," I have to laugh. I've got news for you, hoss--I look better and younger than you do. If you don't believe me, ask around--I've met a number of people here.

I gotta admit, the approval is nice.
But really, I do it for the same reason I do most of my posting now: boredom. There was a time when some pretty cool discussions could be had on this board, but over time, a certain breed of poster helped drive all that away. There are a lot of people who used to post on here that I disagreed with on every single issue, but at least they could hold their own. And because you're part of that trend which left me with nothing better to do, I flame you.
Quote : | "since you can't effectively attack the sources" |
Generally it's not that the sources themselves are that bad, it's that they -- and your take on them -- are very "one note."
Quote : | "But since you know every goddamned thing, you already know this, right?" |
I do. So does everyone who posts on this board, even though they usually express it just by saying "words." I also know that the sort of thing mentioned in that article is just the internet manifestation of the sort of human fallacies that have constantly worked to kill quality in the news media -- hell, any media -- for a very long time.
Now, you want to contribute to the problem, I suppose that's your business, but I'm going to point it out from time to time.
Hahaha, the tragedy of me posting on this board when I'm sober is that I'm much less paranoid about my typos and therefore much less likely to proofread.
Quote : | "they are neither endless" |
The posts themselves aren't, but the series, far as I can tell, is. I mean, I suppose they will end with you, the wolfweb, our your interest in the same, but who can say when that will be?
Quote : | "formulaic (perhaps in style, but not substance)" |
We could argue about the substance, but why bother when you've already conceded the point?
Quote : | "what party am I a member of again?" |
This trick is much better when Stephen Colbert performs it. You know, the one where you can claim to be nonpartisan because you've never specifically stated your party affiliation? Even though virtually everything you say indicates one? I mean, with Colbert it's a joke, as in "ha-ha" joke, not the, "God, your such a fucking joke."
Quote : | "In any event, no one is forcing you to visit my threads." |
Every hooksaw thread drives decent debate further away from TSB. The effects of your inane chatter extend beyond the confines of your threads.
Quote : | "First, you don't know me--you know nothing about me." |
Well, I know what I see every day when I log into this website. Maybe your posts are all an act, some sort of performance art piece or masterful ploy at deception. Maybe you're the Kayser Soze of internet buffoons. But when every interaction I have with a person consists of them acting like an idiot, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the person is an idiot.
Quote : | "And don't give me any of that quality-versus-quantity bullshit." |
You may rest assured, hooksaw, we're all very well aware of your position on the quantity-vs-quality debate.
Quote : | "I've got news for you, hoss--I look better and younger than you do." |
Here's a question for anybody, anybody at all:
Have I ever once implied that I was even remotely good-looking? One single time? If anyone can produce evidence of me doing that in a tone that a reasonable person might believe was serious, I will give you money.
Now the question for hooksaw:
Did I say that you looked old? No. I said that you were old. If I were going to play amateur psychoanalyst, I'd have to say that the ferocity with which you were willing to compare appearances belies some insecurity on the matter. Especially since the best you could do was to compare yourself to me.
---
Quote : | "Does anyone else find it strange that 5/6 of Grumpy's last few posts have been about flaming TWW conservatives/libertarians?" |
I flame people who are flame-worthy. Any trends in party affiliation are coincidental.
Quote : | "Grumpy has also been pretty quiet on the election this go around." |
I like John McCain, but I perceive certain positives to an Obama win that come close enough to balancing it out that I don't feel compelled to get up in arms just yet. Besides, like you say, the discourse on issues is getting weaker and weaker, both on this board and in the country. You want me to get worked up in a discussion about lapel pins or some shit?6/27/2008 3:45:21 AM |
hooksaw All American 16500 Posts user info edit post |
Sweet Jesus--look at yourself, man. Did you really just take the time to post all that bullshit?
I'm not even going to bother addressing it all. But here are a few thoughts:
Quote : | "This trick is much better when Stephen Colbert performs it. You know, the one where you can claim to be nonpartisan because you've never specifically stated your party affiliation? Even though virtually everything you say indicates one? I mean, with Colbert it's a joke, as in 'ha-ha' joke, not the, 'God, your such a fucking joke.'" |
This is where the "knowing me" part would be helpful. I vote for Democrats in every election--I have never voted a straight-party ticket in my life. In fact, I was even the campaign manager for a Democrat (GASP!) at the county level--he won, BTW.
So, once again, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. The "imbalance" you perceive here is my attempt to balance what I know has been a left-of-center skew in TSB--to be fair, it is somewhat better than it was, say, about two years ago when the place was absolutely infested with barking left-wing moonbats. Hey, that would've been about the time that you thought it was TSB's heyday, right?
If anyone has been run out of here, they deserved it (users like McDouche come to mind). It has been shown time and again that the leftists can't compete in the arena of ideas--see Air America and the push to bring back the Fairness Doctrine for evidence of that.
My conservative views beyond TWW are mostly about homeland security, sound fiscal policy, and individual rights. I disagree with Republicans and Bush on any number of issues and I've indicated as much on numerous occasions here--not that you've taken the time to notice:
Quote : | "There are a number of issues that I have disagreed with President Bush about: spending, border enforcement, stem cell research, and so on." |

And I don't like the "old" bullshit from you or anybody else for a number of reasons: (1) It's subjective--one person's "old" is another's "young" or what have you. (2) It's a shitty personal attack. And (3) it's off topic.
BTW, I'm still waiting--we're all waiting--for some of those quality threads you keep pining away for. I mean, such a grand old user like you should be able to whip out a dozen or so--no problem. Well, we're waiting. . . .

Hooksaw is, sadly, indicative of a large number of knee-jerk conservatives (they're as prevalent as knee-jerk liberals) out there who substitute fervor for rigor in their arguments. Quote : | "Why can't you just admit that you got pwned by me right here:" |
I admitted that I was mistaken on some key points, because I was. But I still wasn't too far off the mark. You're not trying to characterize the issue as a democratic problem, you're gloating that it is one.

Now wait just one second, as the former VP of my high school's Teenage Republicans club, I resent the implication that I was anything like hooksaw when I was 17.6/27/2008 12:25:51 PM |

Quote : | "In fact, I was even the campaign manager for a Democrat (GASP!) at the county level--he won, BTW." | I'm sorry, but I find it nearly impossible to believe that you could manage a campaign. You have enough trouble disagreeing with people on a college bulletin board without descending into name calling pretty much off the bat. It had to have been an uncontested seat or in a district so Democratic that a Republican hadn't won since Reconstruction for a candidate you managed to have won. ]6/28/2008 12:00:31 AM |

^ Who gives a fuck what you believe? I find it painfully obvious that it's "nearly impossible" for you to post on topic.
Get off my nuts and on topic or GTFO. Thanks! 6/29/2008 6:39:43 AM |

wow, can't we all just get along... oh wait, where am I?
really, if not for arguing over perceived interweb might then what would most threads here amount to?
I do think there have been a number of interesting threads lately, sadly I have not contributed as much to my view point as I would like in principle, but then there's real life where my internet strength earns me little but esoteric arguments and perhaps anticipating a point or two I wouldn't otherwise...
One thing I must disagree with.
There was never a "golden age" of TSB. When I started reading TSB years ago people back then said it was better a few years before, go figure you guys are still saying as much. I submit that TSB sucks just as much as it ever has, and if it continues to exist it will continue to suck. Of course there will still be threads that are lasting and deep. But, the partisan kneejerk threads are a needed and healthy response to the outright partisan hackery of most of the news, both left and right leaning.

you have no right to claim there was no golden day. You've barely been around at all. 6/29/2008 7:47:22 PM |

Will be there with bells on.
PS: There was a golden era. It wasn't what ppl make it out to be. Still about 95% ignorant and/or stupid bastards, but the other 5% were (1) more active, and (2) better spoken.

^ The internet in general was better-spoken back in the days, and it will never be like that again. You can almost guess people's ages by the lols they put in their posts.
And our "you can be a jerk, but just don't ONLY be a jerk" rule doesn't help the non-well-spoken-ness either. 6/29/2008 10:00:51 PM |

Christ. I remember writing ESSAYS on this motherfucker in reply to Smoker4s and TGDs arguments (which were also fucking ESSAYS). Wonder if that Crocodile Tears thread even still exists...

'Gitmo On The Platte' Set As Holding Cell For DNC
Quote : | "DENVER (CBS4) ? CBS4 News has learned if mass arrests happen at the Democratic Convention, those taken into custody will be jailed in a warehouse owned by the City of Denver. Investigator Rick Sallinger discovered the location and managed to get inside for a look.
The newly created lockup is on the northeast side of Denver. Protesters have already given this place a name: 'Gitmo on the Platte.'
Inside are dozens are metal cages. They are made out of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire." |
Quote : | "Each of the fenced areas is about 5 yards by 5 yards and there is a lock on the door. A sign on the wall reads 'Warning! Electric stun devices used in this facility.'
CBS4 showed its video to leaders of groups that plan to demonstrate during the convention.
'Very bare bones and very reminiscent of a political prisoner camp or a concentration camp,' said Zoe Williams of Code Pink.
Williams was one of those arrested at the Republican Convention in New York in 2004.
'That's how you treat cattle,' said Adam Jung of the group Tent State University. 'You showed the sign where it said stun gun in use and you just change the word gun for bolt and it's a meat processing plant.'" |
Quote : | "The plans were to keep this lockup a secret, at least for now. The sheriff's department said late Tuesday the mayor's office would be releasing a statement about it early next week.
The American Civil Liberties Union is asking the City of Denver how prisoners will get access to food and water, bathrooms, telephones, plus medical care, and if there will be a place to meet with attorneys." |
