Hardcore is a very loose term...lots of sub-genres. Also a lot of bands have been hardcore at one point and now arent....so its hard to say what it really is.

But here is a short list of Hardcore/Metal bands I can stand behind.

Misfits, Samhain, Danzig, Jimmy Eat World, Juliana Theory, Black flag, Adolescents, Suicidal Tendencies, VOD, SOD, Meshuggah, Hot Rod Circuit, Sense Field, Boysetsfire, Split Lip, Endpoint, Into Another, Harvest, Bleeding Through, Faith No More, Himsa, As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, Bad Brains, As Friends Rust, Bullet For My Valentine, Flogging Molly, The Business, Funeral Dress, Dropkick Murphys, Deicide, Circle Jerks, Dead Milkmen, Dead Kennedys, Ignite, Kamelot, Length Of Time, Deformity, Luca Tirilli, Manowar, Martyr AD, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Life Of Agony, Therion, Starkweather, Taking Back Sunday, Strike Anywhere, Sick Of It All, Madball, Slayer, Refused, Pantera, Minor Threat, Morning Again, Candiria, Dissolve, Mayday, Jasta 14, 25 Ta Life, Emmure, Terror, Burial Ground, Integrity, etc.

hardcore, as is commonly referred to 'round these parts, is the stuff with heavy riffing, breakdowns, and screaming vocalists

at least, that is what i'm referring to. original hardcore that spawned from punk is all good in my book.

^^^ that is a VERY loose definition. Deicide? Meshuggah? haha

only 3 or 4 of those bands are the hardcore of today

See you people have no idea what Hardcore is. Emo has been loosely used for decades. And is a sub genre of hardcore. Bands like Misfits, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks a lot of times get listed as punk, but are the founders of Hardcore. Hardcore came from the term "hardcore punk."

Flogging Molly in the Mid 90s was heavily influenced by Oi, a form of Hardcore punk.

I understand what hardcore means, and I use it in the sense that blas is using it. I just don't listen to it, or really any of its related subgenres.

Hardcore can also refer to electronica that's closely related to gabber and drum and bass; I do listen to some of that. But it's such an overused term that I don't use it in relation to electronica; I only use it when talking about hardcore punk that spawned in the early 1980's.

Here's a breakdown of today's musics:

West Coast: Mainly metalcore

Midwest: Mainly sludge metal and grind bands

East Coast: Mainly straight death metal

Of course they have their exceptions, but that is pretty much how I see it.

But i do agree that isn't the original definition

The question wasn't who listens to todays bastardization of once good genres. It is who listens to metal/hardcore. Metal can range from Black Sabbath to Dimmu Borgir to Slipknot to Deftones etc. Just as Hardcore can range from Judge to Scary Kids Scaring Kids to Jimmy Eat World to Soilent Green.

My point is genre classification is not a perfect science and these terms are about as useful as a broad with self worth.
