Quote : | "Man stabs pit bull to death after dog bites his wife
ANAHEIM – A man in his 50s stabbed a pit bull to death Tuesday night as the dog attacked him and his wife while they were walking their two dogs, Anaheim police said.
The couple suffered bite wounds to their hands that required tetanus shots. Their two dogs – a Siberian huskey and an American Eskimo – suffered injuries in the attack; the American Eskimo underwent surgery at a pet hospital. Both dogs were expected to survive.
Douglas Perry, 58, said he and his wife, Vicki, 51, were walking the dogs near their home in the 2800 block of West Elm Lawn Drive around 5:30 p.m.
"I was waving to a neighbor when I heard my wife scream," Perry said. "Out of nowhere, this black-and-white pit bull had pounced on her and our Siberian, and they were rolling around in a ball on the ground.
"My wife yelled that he had bit her finger off," Perry said.
Several neighbors who heard the commotion came running to their aid. They kicked and stomped at the pit bull to try to get it to release its grip, but the dog kept biting Vicki Perry's hand.
Perry said he swung his American Eskimo dog by the leash to try to get it away from the pit bull. A neighbor shouted to let go of the leash so the dog could run away from the pit bull.
"That was a mistake because the pit ran after it, stepped on the leash and then sunk its teeth into the little dog," Perry said.
He ran to a neighbor's house and asked for a kitchen knife. He ran back and stabbed the pit bull in the torso, but it still didn't let go.
He stabbed it a second time and it stopped attacking. It staggered away, collapsed and died in the street, police said.
"It turned out my wife didn't lose her finger, but her hand was in the dog's mouth, so she was sure it was gone – it turns out it was just a lot of blood," Perry said from the hospital this morning as he and his wife awaited treatment.
Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez said Perry was within his rights to stab the dog.
"Based on everything we've seen and from all witness accounts, the dog was very aggressive and he was acting in self-defense," Martinez said.
The pit bull's owner had dropped the dog off at a friend's house within the past week, Martinez said.
"It had been in a back yard and the people who were watching it didn't know it had gotten out or that it was aggressive," Martinez said. " |

I swear, I think it's only in California that this has to be stated.
It should read:

They're stronger than you would think.
My dog and I were recently attacked by a pit bull and once they grab on to something they don't let go. The pit bull attacked my dog, put a hole in his leg, and when I kicked the pit bull it turned around and broke a bone in my hand. I'm lucking that some other people at the dog park though to wrangle him because I'm sure both my hand and my dog would be much worse off if they weren't there.

pits were partly bred to be nanny dogs...you people know this right? its the way the dog is handled and trained. the dog is a dog and the owners are at fault here IMO
Quote : | "1. Pit Bulls are commonly used as therapy dogs. Whether they are visiting a senior care facility or helping someone recover from an emotional accident, Pit Bulls are making a mark as outstanding therapy dogs.
2. Pit Bulls are used in Search and Rescue work. One example of well known SAR Pit Bulls is Kris Crawford and her dogs. Kris and her dogs have helped save the lives of many people during their efforts. http://www.ForPitsSake.org
3. Pit Bulls serve as narcotic and bomb sniffing dogs. One Pit Bull, Popsicle (named that because he was found in an old freezer) has the largest recorded single drug find in Texas history. Read more about Popsicle here. Including how he found over 3,000 lbs of cocaine in Hildago, Texas.
4. Pit Bulls are great with kids. They weren't referred to as the "nanny's dog" for nothing that's for sure.
5. Pit Bulls are not human aggressive. The American Pit Bull Terrier as a breed is not human aggressive. In fact, quite the opposite is true of the breed. They are gentle and loving dogs. Like any dog individuals can be unsound and have behavior problems.
6. The Pit Bull was so popular in the early 1900's they were our mascot not only in World War One, but World War Two as well. They were featured on recruiting and propoganda posters during this time period.
7. Sgt. Stubby. A Pit Bull war hero. Stubby was wounded in action twice, he saved his entire platoon by warning them of a poison gas attack and he single handedly captured a German spy.
8. Pete the Pup on the orginal Little Rascals was a Pit Bull.
9. Pit Bulls score an 83.4% passing rate with the American Temperament Test Society. That's better than the popular Border Collie (a breed who scores 79.6%). View the ATTS stats here.
10. They are dogs not killing machines." |

When smaller, much more aggressive breeds attack people they usually just laugh about it and hit the dog with something.
You hear about pit bulls more often because they are much stronger.1/8/2009 11:01:55 AM |

that's part of the point. It doesn't matter if a little yap dog is aggressive (and they often are) because they can't really do major damage and they are often kept inside. 1/8/2009 11:03:54 AM |

umm , no its not. pits by nature are not aggressive toward people or children; dogs are another story. pits can be VERY aggressive to other dogs. as far as humans are concerned...they are more loyal to their owners than most any other breed
so you need to clarify your point1/8/2009 11:15:07 AM |

I hate this type of statement. It sounds like a good trait until you realize that dogs, by comparison to humans, are dumb beings. So when your dog plays nanny and protects your kid, it basically means that the bastard is chasing me down the sidewalk trying to bite my ass. If I ever get a dog I will protect the dog, not the other way around. I don't need a four legged liability to protect me or my kids.1/8/2009 11:18:54 AM |

^^^well oftentimes, as is the case in the OP, aggression towards another dog turned into nearly biting the hand off the owner.
I'm not really sure you can separate people/dog aggression as cleanly as you are suggesting.
I agree with you, though, that properly trained a pit bull can be a great family pet.

Also, you know what can kill you more easily than a pit bull? Horses. We better not let people own horses, they could snap at any time!

keep on thinking that b/c you are completely wrong. i guess this is why only 3 dogs of Michael Vick's were put down. 2 were very aggressive and one was just so fucked up it wouldnt had made it. all the other ones were pretty much adopted or are being retrained and deprogrammed.

i respect the fact that you wouldnt own one but to lay out such an ignorant blanketed statement to say that it is not a safe breed is ridiculous
Quote : | "I'm not really sure you can separate people/dog aggression as cleanly as you are suggesting." |
why not....its black and white. generally most people who surrender pits are usually due to dog aggression (which is often mistaken for human aggression by inexperienced owners). ]1/8/2009 11:28:37 AM |
jocristian All American 7527 Posts user info edit post |
I'm also not suggesting that they are inherently unsafe or should be outlawed.
But I would like them to become less popular. They are more aggressive than most other breeds and a vast majority of dog owners shouldn't consider them because they aren't equipped to handle/train them.

With enough time and money you can train lions, tigers, and bears. Those dogs practically have a blank check attached to them. If they belonged to anyone else they'd already be put down.

not true
lots of his dogs went straight into foster homes....why not do a little research b4 talking out of your ass?
most of the dogs went to Pitt rescues and the most aggressive dogs that were champion fighters or some of the dogs there were really fucked up went 2 Best Friends in Utah

One thing I have heard, while it's always a terrible idea to leave a young child alone with a large dog, pit bulls are actually much safer than other breeds because they have a higher pain tolerance. 1/8/2009 11:37:37 AM |

dude, any large, med breed can maul a child with ease! shit, even puppies can harm kids so thats a moot point.
Pits love all people, especially children. The only caution I would add is that, because they are very exuberant and energetic dogs, they can sometimes overwhelm very young children and accidentally bump them or knock them over, particularly when they are pups (under 2 years old).
other than that....they might be one of the best breeds to leave with children as an adult dog.
i mean, Peaty in the LIttle Rascals was a pit and they were kids.
Quote : | "Pit Bulls have been reported in the news media as "adopting" other species of animals, such as kittens (fig. 1). This is one possible origin of the breed nickname "nanny dog".[70] However, it is more widely accepted that the "nanny dog" nickname comes from Pit Bull-type dogs' innate love and tolerance of children" |
