New HP laptops are shit. My Dad got one a week or two ago that didn't last 24 hours before he took it back to Staples (or where ever) and returned it. Now he's getting a custom built IBM.

My friend's sister got a new HP earlier this year that has gotten to the point that she needs to 'turn it on' 15 times before it actually kicks in and boots up.

Maybe they were just that unlucky. I have had one for over a year, with no problems except for the broken hinge, and at least it did not cost me a dime to have it fixed, and my machine was out of warranty and they still fixed. I am sure it was a bad engineering problem of exceptional failure rate, but still they recognized it and took responsibility. They could be a little more sturdy, this is true, but overall they are good machines.

Yeah, I know my examples are probably just flukes, but it still irritates me that computer companies (and all companies now, really) put out products that have the capability to fail within a year or two of being released. My mom actually did a ton of research and found that HP laptops had the best reviews across the board.

Our desktops have been HP's as well. They've gotten really weird problems from time to time and my mom's desktop is really fucking slow compared to how it should be doing with what, 2 GB RAM?

i've been lucky with my HP. well after they realized that the motherboards they were putting the HP Special Edition laptops were dying within 6 months. no problems since then.
