i work from home a lot and i find the best way for me to concentrate is to sit down at a desk and work off a to do list. usually i'll have the news on while i do it and i work in a separate room in the house. in the past when i've tried working from home on the couch or dining room table i'd be staring out the window or getting into stupid tv shows. it helps me to go into a room shut the door and focus in
also i like to go to coffee shops and work because i find i can concentrate better with other things going on around me 3/18/2010 2:04:42 PM |

Maintaining a list helps me too. Sometimes it makes all the difference in the world when you get really tired of one thing to go knock out a couple of easier tasks before coming back to the difficult one.
I do work from the couch in the living room a lot, but I usually throw on some low volume music on my iPod dock in the kitchen or on one of the music channels on the TV (playing through the stereo with the tv turned off). That way I'm not in total silence, but it's not a distraction either. My ADD goes crazy if I try to work in a totally silent environment and the tv would distract me if it were turned on.
I also try to get out for 15-30 minutes when things get really tiresome. It's easy to get bored/unproductive staring at the computer all day. Just jumping in the car and driving to the grocery store can be a good refresher. I do this in the office too, so it's not exclusive to WFH days.

oh yeah the #1 benefit of working from home is being able to take care of other shit
laundry, errands, post office, library, mall -- anything that i avoid because it's normally too busy, i can take care of on off hours and when the work day is over i can really do whatever i want & usually end up going to bed so much earlier 3/18/2010 2:22:53 PM |
