The very first forums i started frequenting ~10 years ago ( http://www.maclife.com/forums/ ) announced 2 days ago they were shutting down, and chaos ensued.

People started posting threads with porn (that were deleted...), and other users started sharing their passwords, zombie threads were bumped, it's the forum equivalent of mass hysteria.

TWW has been slowing down for a while, and may be on a death spiral...

If this were to ever happen, i can imagine things being WAY worse.

Facebook and WoW didn't exist when TWW started. These 2 things alone are eating into general-purpose bulletin boards around the Internets.

I can't think of any posters here who are actually freshman or sophomores in college.

they're all in classifieds, sports talk and study hall.

they blend in a lot more b/c there are 10 years worth of people who came before, instead of 2-3 years of alumns like in the really high traffic days. plus, it takes most people a couple years of lurking, casual posts before they venture into chit chat and get hooked. we basically lost out on 2007-2010, so there's a lot of making up to do. it's gonna take time. just look at the users page. we still get a few new users a day. they just don't immediately jump into a 20 post/day habit. part of the redesign focuses on tweaking the usability to make the new user experience easier, more calls to action, reducing the barrier to participation, and so forth
