I'm so sick of people on Facebook jumping on the bandwagon for stupid ass causes - what set me off? The abundance of "Equality NC" bs posts rallying for gay rights and gay marriage. I'm sorry but I'm gay and even I don't give a shit about all that - sure you could get a tax break or whatever but you could also get half your shit taken in a divorce settlement. Half the people posting about said legislation don't even know what the hell they're talking about, they only do it to look "active in the community" /vent

The GOP led General Assembly is calling a special session next week, with all the time and tax payer money that costs, to double marriage. Its already banned in the law, and that has no chance of changing short of federal action, which this double ban wouldn't stop anyways if SCOTUS gets into it.

The rally you're hearing about isn't pro-marriage recognition so much as its anti-government amending the state constitution on this issue, in a way that risks kicking people who are currently on each others insurance off, in a way that risks preventing businesses from offering the benefits packages of their choice.

Its the NC GOP that took power in 2010 starting this round of constitution hacking fun, not teh gays, just fyi.

And this is one of the issues where I begin to hate republicans... I've agree with them on many issues since they took office, but holy shit, this amendment issue clearly shows their two faces. It's concerning that so many people agree with increasing government power and ability to control personal decisions. not to mention, I firmly believe the purpose of constitutions is to state the limitations of the government's power and to enumerate the freedoms of the people; not to limit the freedom of people and increase the power of government (I know this isn't valid for all constituions, but it's my political belief for the purpose of one).

Not all of us are all *that* concerned about the forces of evil displaying their raw, atavistic hatred of the Other; I actually met a trans woman a few months ago who despite having lived as a woman for less than a year (much less time than it takes for a typical transsexual to disengage from the trans community) wasn't actually following the issues much, even though Ohio is unusual in not allowing a change in official gender even with GCS and a court order (only Tennesee and Idaho are like that).

So I wonder, do you see a lot of friends re-posting things from Equality NC or something? I mean I sure get a lot of LGBT-related material in my News Feed but little of it comes from friends that I hadn't met via LGBT-related groups...

This amendment is a waste of taxpayer dollars. Inequality aside, why are we wasting time and money on something trivial like this when there's more important shit for our state legislature to be worried about, like our abysmal unemployment rate?

I did laugh at an interview I heard on NPR a few weeks ago about legalized gay marriage in NY. A gay couple was bitching that they had to get married or else the partner was going to lose the healthcare benefits he was receiving. Guess there's some clause in most employer heath insurance that says if a state legalizes gay marriage then you have to get married to continue receiving benefits.

They were all pissy but all I could say is WELCOME TO HETERO LIFE, BIATCHES.

where is ANYONE'S freedom being limited? No one is saying to gay guys can't live together. People are simply saying what the basic definition of "marriage" is, one that has been known for thousands of years before idiots decided to say it meant something different.

what's to refute? human societies progress; idiots like you don't. history says goodbye and people continue to laugh at your stupidity long after you're dead.

that is, unless you think racists who believed whites and blacks shouldn't marry have been treated kindly by history

they shouldn't, because the history of interracial marriage is a valid and existing one. no where do we see it accepted that a marriage was anything other than one man, one woman. yet fools like you want to redefine it to make other people with different choices feel good about themselves

and yes, societies progress, which is why we rightfully don't stone gay people. but that's a far cry from changing the basic definition of a word that has been understood for thousands of years just to suit cry babies who are mad that their choices exclude them from it

Oppose fat marriage. They made bad choices. Don't reward them. Traditionally fatties are ostracized and not regarded as attractive enough to find a mate. This is a time tested tradition.

lol i love how you give a shit that things have been some particular way "forever" (often times they haven't) as if that validates it somehow. Remember how you were confused about whether or not child rape is okay if the guy doing it is from an "established religion"?

I don't mind fat people getting married. As long as they're only marrying each other. I am against fat-skinny marriages, though. That shit's unnatural.

when you are talking about what the definition of a word is, it sure as fuck helps to know what people have always considered it to be.

hey guys just shootin from the hip here ablufrfd bllurfff based on my misunderstandings and spotty knowledge of history i will argue for tru, timeless human norms that we must support with the rule of government (which i normally oppose and hate)

appropriate uses of government: stomping a mudhole in faggots
inappropriate uses: taking care of the destitute and optionless

It wasn't until 342 AD in Rome that same sex marriage was made illegal. That law had to do with the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire during that time.

1. What gives the government the right to further restrict the definition of marriage? Note: this isn't opening the door to situations of humans marrying animals, etc. Marriage is a legal contract between consenting adults that is backed by the government.

2. Why must marriage be defined by the government as between two adults of the opposite sex?

3. How does gay marriage infringe upon the rights of others, thus warranting its outlawing?

4. How does gay marriage endanger the people, thus warranting its outlawing?

5. Have no gay marriages ever taken place before our generation (serious question... I don't know, because mainly I don't care, but you brought up the 1,000s of years point)?

6. The mere fact of making it illegal for one certain group of citizens to partake in an otherwise open, legal, government contract, is nothing but limiting their freedom. If the winds changed in 100 years and gays ruled the country and said straight marriage is "dangerous" and should be outlawed, would you not claim this to be a violation of your rights?

Personally, I don't give a shit for gay marriage. I don't care for it, I don't like it. But legally, there is no argument against it. There is nothing that says the government has the right to, or even needs to, limit marriage to straight couples. It's a personal choice that harms no one.
