I stopped collecting about 5-6 years ago, but I'll probably pick up marvel's Dark Tower comic series. They should be coming out in about a month.

Yea the one off Glenwood is great. I am not sure if the guy who works there is the same guy who owned the one on Hillsborough Street or vice versa.
They offer a good subscription program for people who buy comics every week. Or at least they used to do that.
Anyway I have been enjoying the All-Star Superman series.
This is the latest one in the series. Basically Superman has been overrun by solar energy and he is slowing dying. The last few had Olsen as director of the new Cadmus project and another with Lois Lane getting super powers for 24 hours.
Pretty good read. 1/10/2007 6:50:21 PM |

The durham location for the ultimate comics is only about a 10 min drive away, so I think I'll give it a try tonight. Apparently their 2nd store, the one in Chapel Hill thats really nearby is their more upscale store, but the durham one is their first... so hopefully there will be some Nightcrawler stuff there I can raid. And its nice to get a feel for all the local places by going there atleast once. 1/10/2007 7:33:47 PM |

^^I like the bamf power, and I've enjoyed games like diablo and movies like silent hill... and nightcrawler is big on fighting, encountering, and looking like demons.
So I just went by the ultimate comics store number one. Apparently what they meant by not as upscale, was more chaotic, but they also had a lot more comic and other offerings (of course only the one in chapel hill carried sets, but this place more than compensated for that). I spent about $25 which is my average for when I walk out of a comic shop. I got several Excalibur issues that featured nightcrawler prominently & one that was about the phoenix but it had a nightcrawler hologram thing included. 1/10/2007 8:54:11 PM |

All Star continuity The All Star titles are self-contained story arcs existing outside of official DC Comics continuity. Despite sharing a label with Grant Morrison's All Star Superman and Geoff Johns's upcoming All Star Batgirl, All Star Batman & Robin is unique and unrelated.
Miller has also stated that All Star Batman & Robin does exist in the same continuity as the other storylines in his "Dark Knight Universe". This consists of Miller's preeminent The Dark Knight Returns, its sequel The Dark Knight Strikes Again, Year One, and the upcoming Holy Terror, Batman! -wiki 1/11/2007 12:39:26 PM |

Oh yea I have loved the All-Star series. Another good side story of popular DC characters are found in the Elseworld volumes.
There are trade volumes with stories of Superman as a business mogul, Tarzan, and him never becoming Superman (staying as a hero in shroud) 1/11/2007 4:32:36 PM |

I plan to go back, but not until after my next pay check.
I just got the 4 x-calibre issues from AoA & a nightcrawler vs spiderman & some other nc artwork stuff... so my comic budget is definitely broken for a while. But with x-mas money and having a full time job now that I graduated last year, I feel that spending this much isn't too bad since its a smaller fraction of my overall income now.

Quote : | "Civil War is a Marvel Comics summer 2006 and winter 2007 crossover event, based around a core limited series of the same name written by Mark Millar and penciled by Steve McNiven. The work builds upon events appearing in previous Marvel crossovers, particularly Avengers Disassembled, House of M and Decimation. Some story elements are the result of the limited series Secret War. The tag line for the series is Whose Side Are You On? [1]" |
Quote : | "The premise of the Civil War storyline is the introduction of a Superhuman Registration Act in the United States. Similar acts have been used as literary devices in Watchmen, X-Men, and The Incredibles. Millar has said he "opted instead for making the superhero dilemma something a little different. People thought they were dangerous, but they didn't want a ban. What they wanted was superheroes paid by the federal government like cops and open to the same kind of scrutiny. It was the perfect solution and nobody, as far as I'm aware, has done this before."[2]
The act requires any person in the United States with superhuman abilities to register with the federal government and receive proper training. Those who sign also have the option of working for S.H.I.E.L.D., earning a salary and benefits such as those earned by other American civil servants. Characters within the superhuman community in the Marvel Universe split into two groups: one advocating registration as a responsible obligation, and the other opposing the law on the grounds that it violates privacy rights. The genesis for this idea sprang from conversations between Mark Millar, Brian Bendis, and Bryan Hitch.[2] Within the story the adoption of sides by characters builds into the titular civil war. Although the series can be read as allegorical commentary in the wake of 9/11 and The Patriot Act, writer Mark Millar has noted, "The political allegory is only for those that are politically aware. Kids are going to read it and just see a big superhero fight." [3]

Quote : | "Synopsis Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. The New Warriors battle a group of villains (Nitro, Cobalt Man, Speedfreek and Coldheart) in Stamford, Connecticut while filming a reality television show. Nitro explodes, destroying a local school and the surrounding neighborhood and killing all of the New Warriors except Speedball. The explosion also kills 612 citizens of the town, including the children at the school. The "Stamford Incident" turns public opinion against superheroes, giving momentum to the Superhuman Registration Act. Angry civilians attack Johnny Storm, the Human Torch[7] and a bereaved mother spits on Tony Stark.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Maria Hill attempts to recruit Captain America for a strike force created to track down superhumans in violation of the act. When Captain America refuses, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents attack him (notably before the act goes into effect), but he escapes. However, Iron Man supports the act and mobilizes many registered superhumans, including Mister Fantastic, Henry Pym and Spider-Man, who unmasks himself to the world press in order to find and redeem the anti-registration heroes. [8]
The fugitive Captain America forms an underground resistance, which the press dubs the "Secret Avengers", including Hercules, Cable, Falcon and Iron Fist (who is posing as Daredevil). Former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury, who remains a fugitive after Secret War, provides support. In subsequent issues, they rescue other heroes from S.H.I.E.L.D., such as Luke Cage[9] and the Young Avengers. [10]
The anti-registration heroes race to a reported emergency at a petrochemical plant, but Cable realizes too late that it is a trap. As Hercules attempts to save Captain America from Iron Man, a massive bolt of lightning strikes the anti-registration heroes, revealed to be from a clone of Thor. The X-Men also declare their official neutrality in the conflict. [11]
The Thor clone attacks the anti-registration heroes and Iron Man incapacitates the Secret Avengers. The enraged clone kills Goliath with a lightning blast and then attempts to blast the other anti-registration heroes. Sue Richards intervenes and deflects the blast with her force-field powers. Cable uses Cloak's power to teleport the Secret Avengers away, leaving many behind, including Wiccan. In the aftermath of the fight, Cable returns to the X-Men, Stature and Nighthawk leave to join the pro-registration heroes, while Johnny Storm and Sue Richards seek out the anti-registration heroes. Desperate to replenish their forces in the struggle, Tony and Reed draft the Thunderbolts to their cause. [12]
Spider-Man attempts to leave the pro-registration side and is chased by S.H.I.E.L.D. and new Thunderbolts members Jack O'Lantern and the Jester. Before they can bring Spider-Man in, the Punisher arrives and kills them both. While the Secret Avengers make a plan to break into the Baxter Building and get to the Negative Zone Prison, the Punisher enters carrying the wounded Spider-Man. He claims he can get the Secret Avengers into the Baxter Building, but they are unsure about letting him join their ranks. Tigra eavesdrops on the scene with a cell phone. In Hell's Kitchen, Daredevil (presumably still Iron Fist under the Daredevil guise) is captured and taken to the Negative Zone Prison, where Stark unsuccessfully attempts to convince him to register. [13]
As the Punisher works his way through the Baxter Building to retrieve plans for the number 42, Sue Richards goes to Atlantis to persuade Namor to join the Secret Avengers, but to no avail. The supervillains Goldbug and Plunderer arrive at the Secret Avengers' base to join Captain America's team, but the Punisher immediately kills them, leading Captain America to attack him and kick him off the group. The Secret Avengers, joined by Storm and the Black Panther, have finally reach the Ryker's island penitentiary, but the team is confronted by the pro-registration supporters, revealing each team had placed a spy on the other. The Hulkling is able to release the incarcerated heroes from the 42 complex through the guise of Henry Pym, making the odds a little even. As the battle is about to commence, Captain America warns the pro-registration heroes: "Now close your eyes, gentlemen. This might hurt." " |

There have only been about 15 issues of uncanny x-men released since decimination, where the number of mutants (mostly unimportant ones) was vastly reduced. That made it a lot more like the x-men stuff I’ve encountered growing up in comics, video games, tv series/movies. Also the x-men are neutral in the civil war, so you don’t have to follow all the civil war crossovers, and the x-men are mostly in Shi’ar territory (alien humanoids that anyone who has heard of the Phoenix should be familiar with). Less mutants and less crossovers made this an easy time to get back into the main x-men series, so I’ve just finished acquiring all the issues that come after decimination.
For someone else trying to get into the series while things are simple I’d either start on 475 which begins the most recent story arch called “The Rise and Fall of the Shi’ar Empire” which is a 12 part series, or wait a few months until 487 is released which will be the first issue after the Shi’ar story arch is over.
Quote : | " Brief Description: Issue 475 Professor Xavier and Hank McCoy are struggling to communicate with the Shi’ar, and it’s important that they do so. Charles proceeds to gather a team around him, approaching Nightcrawler, Warpath and Marvel Girl in turn. At some point, he also asks Havok to join his team. Marvel Girl is there partly because she has the power of telepathy; something Charles has recently lost. The first thing he asks them to do is to retrieve Polaris. In Al Qutay, Egypt, a group of anti-Apocalypse cultists attack her. She tries to flee from them, afraid of what she might do should she retaliate. Her powers are fluctuating and she considers herself dangerous. Using Cerebra to locate her, the X-Men then head to Egypt and rout the cultists, assuring Polaris that her place is with them, and that she deserves a second chance. With the team together, Charles informs them that they’re heading to Shi’ar space to try and prevent Vulcan from exacting his revenge on the entire race. First, though, he needs the X-Men to steal a spaceship." |

uncanny is what i'm following right now, but some new x-men issue that i just picked up cause it had what looked like nightcrawler on it looked interesting. alot of mutants with NC's looks, cyclops eye lasers, maybe angels wings... all working for an evil version of beast in a future where humans are dying out, and he uses the heat from the laser eyes to hatch a pheonix egg where she starts to recognize him and talk about the white hot room... i might have to get more issues of that just to find out what was going on.
also I had no idea how close the first ultimate comics store was to southpoint mall until today despite having gone to both places multiple times, but they are practically at the same intersection where you turn south from 40 to SP & north to UC.

Saw ghost rider. It was better than I expected (mostly b/c I had expectation set very low). Nicolas Cage did better than I thought he could with a marvel character. The movie had more funny than I thought it would. And having Mephistoles in the movie was interesting since its a character nightcrawler has encountered before. Although his father being the demonic mutant Azazel means he's had plenty of experience with demons. 2/26/2007 8:47:48 AM |

I hear there is a comic shop opening in Northgate in Durham soon, or maybe its already open. I don't have the name or website or opening date, but I've heard 3 people independently talking about it. Anyone know anything more? --
Okay so I found this
http://www.thedurhamnews.com/110/story/39605.html
Quote : | "Marvel at this store promotion
Ultimate Comics, a comic-book enterprise with stores in Chapel Hill and on N.C. 54, plans to open a third shop at Northgate Mall. "To spread the work around," said manager Jon Newman. "We have a lot of stuff in storage. ... And [to] add to our customer base."
Newman hasn't set an opening date at Northgate, but it will be "definitely before" the end of March, he said. The store is going in beside Logo Design.
"They had scouted out Northgate for a while and said this was where their customer is," said Paula Harris, the mall's marketing director. "And we're doing a huge promotion with them on May 5."
That, she said, is Free Comic Book Day, a nationwide promotion, when stores literally give comics away. It coincides with Northgate's Phoenix Theatre opening the movie "Spiderman 3," and Spiderman will be making a personal appearance, Harris said -- splitting time between the theater and Ultimate Comics." |

Concerning the Silver Surfer, he defeated Green Lantern in one of the crossovers. I'm not sure that I agree with his victory, but I suppose Galactus is mightier than the Guardians. So, based on the power of the superheroes' creators, I guess Silver Surfer should have won--it bothers me, though. 3/4/2007 5:07:36 AM |

Also I like this quote from a guy who did alot with Civil War, Ultimate X-Men, & the Authority.
Quote : | "After the publication of Civil War #7, Mark Millar was interviewed by Newsarama and described the event as "a story where a guy wrapped in the American flag is in chains as the people swap freedom for security", agreeing that a "certain amount of political allegory" was present but that the real focus of the book was on superheroes fighting each other. Contrasting it with The Ultimates, Millar stated that Civil War was "accidentally political because I just can't help myself"." |
