I was under the impression that the Wal-mart sale was for the 80GB which according to their site is $499. The thread on Slickdeals won't load though, so it may have been updated.

the 60GB is on its way out, I'd be surprised to see any advertised specials with it.

You might be thinking of the 80GB, which is is (kind of) meant to replace it.

The Circuit City deal is decent. 6axis = $50, 3 BD movies = ~$60-70. So you're getting ~$120 worth of stuff thrown in.

^what he said, the deals with blu-ray dvd's are ONLY for the 80gb at $499

there's no such thing as a 60gb at $399, as of November 2nd, it was only the 40gb that dropped to $399, the 80gb dropped to $499, i haven't seen any 60gb PS3's for below $500

Regarding Live Free or Die Hard's audio track:

Quote :
"If you've been looking for an action-loaded soundtrack to blow out your speakers, you've found it in 'Live Free or Die Hard.' I hate to sound cheesy, but this DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround mix (48kHz/24-bit) delivered such intense moments of bombast that it truly rocked the house.

Okay, the film's sound design is about as subtle as a sledgehammer. But that's exactly what any Blu-ray fan wants out of a disc like this. The intensity of the discrete effects and the sheer aggressiveness of the surrounds is truly enveloping. Directionality is all over the place, with sounds zipping about the soundfield with excellent transparency. I was also impressed with how atmospheric sounds were so well-dispersed that they're often hard to localize -- always a sign of well-done mix.

Dynamics are also pounding. 'Live Free or Die Hard' delivers some of the deepest and most forceful low bass I've heard in my eighteen months of reviewing next-gen titles. The sheer crunch and realism of the entire frequency spectrum is just as impressive. And I was absolutely shocked that I had no dialogue balance problems -- I expected that I'd be constantly twiddling the volume knob to compensate, but no need to have such worries. This Blu-ray edition of 'Live Free or Die Hard' offers up an absolutely first-rate, five-star audio presentation.

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1093/livefreeordiehard.html"

Yep, looks like I'll be picking this one up tonight.

40GB PS3 for 300:

http://bensbargains.net/deal/48325/

Sadly you have to sign up for a sony credit card. Still if you pay it off immediately and never use the card again, it might be worth it.

Probably, didn't see it in the thread so far and I didn't feel like combing through 16 pages to find it. Also, from the description it looks like this deal was just recently reintroduced.

Checked again and nope doesn't seem to have been mentioned in the thread so far. It's relevant since it represents a 25% price break if you're willing to deal with an credit card. You can of course use similar deals (buy.com or amazon.com or whatever) to get about 30 bucks off an HD-DVD player though. If you find the right sale on HD-DVD players that could be as much as 25-30 percent off too.

It generally only popped up in PS3 threads early to try and drive the price of the thing down. I understand your point, just wanted to mention that it seems to be exactly the same kind of "Get Sony Card, Save $100 On Sony Product" type offer thats been around (in one form or another) for a while.

Hardly. Consistency and not losing marketshare is probably more in HD DVD's favor than Blu-ray's.

^not sure i follow. if neither format were losing market share, the weekly % would have to match the since-inception % for that week.

I meant more when looking at the week to week basis. It will lose a bit on the "Since Inception" chart over time, however the fact that sales are holding at the same rate to Blu-ray isn't really a negative thing (though granted, it's not at all positive either).

Oh, ok, I can see that then. HD DVD is doing a good job of holding its ground. This is probably due to all the zealotry and devotion people are having to their respective formats. Nobody wants to give up...

every week br sells 10-35% more than hd... that sounds like eroding market share to me...

but i see what you mean about respective % not really changing, but if things stay the way they are, the outlook is grim for HD

It's not really eroding because that's pretty much what it is. The difference between 35% and 39% can't be more than 100,000 units or so.

The more interesting thing to look at is how, despite the fact that more Blu-ray players enter consumer's hands every month than HD DVD players (because the PS3 alone will almost always outsell the standalone and 360 HD DVD players) somehow, HD DVD sales still seem to be nearly the same week after week.

^not really all that 'interesting' to look at, considering most people are probably buying the PS3 to play games on.

I imagine the real draw of looking at that (for you at least) is that you don't have to look at the plain fact that HD-DVD is losing this race.

Trumpting the PS3 as a Blu-ray devices will wind up skewing the attachment rate numbers is the problem. I mean, hey, it's great that there are a bunch more Blu-ray players out there, but at what point do people start looking at the number and go "well, the average Blu-ray player owner owns 2 movies; but the average HD DVD player owner owns 4". I know if I'm trying to sell movies, I want to sell to the people who stereotypically buy more movies. Because no one really knows how often the PS3 is actually used as a Blu-ray player, it's hard to pull relevant statistics based on it. If no one buys a PS3 to play Blu-ray discs, then the attachment rate is phenomonal; if everyone buys a PS3 just to play Blu-ray discs it's laughable.

Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again: I honestly could not care less whether HD DVD wins or loses. I do, however, like that fact that I don't have to spend $300+ to legally watch a movie in something above 480p.

100,000 is kinda low. That would mean only a little over 500,000 movies have ever been sold. Of any movie. Of either format.

Quote :
"Home Media Research reports that Blu-ray has currently sold 1.6 million discs this year while HD DVD has only moved 795,000. The research firm also estimates 3.7 million high definition disc have been sold since launch and 2.2 went to the Blu-ray camp with the remaining 1.5 belonging to HD DVD.
http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/08/16/blu-ray-has-outsold-hd-dvd-so-far-this-year/"

I couldn't agree more. If I didn't already have a PS3 for playing games, I'd be waiting around for a de facto standard. Of all the distributors, I have to say I like Warner best for still having their movies in both formats. I'm locked out of some titles, but HD DVD folks are locked out of other titles. Distributors going exclusive only entrenches, it doesn't solve the problem.

you do know what i mean right?

as in in one week 66 BR sales and 34 HD sales
next week is about the same, say, 65 BR sales and 35 HD sales
next week is again, the same, 66 BR and 34 HD

for three weeks total 197 BR and 103 hd

the next week the difference grows another 32 in favor of BR to a lead of 130

etc etc. a 50/50 sales pattern for the week means the overall market share isn't changing, at 66/34 the market is shifting.

abet it is impressive that hd has so far managed to hang on to 30+% week after week, despite being slowly pushed out of the market

A lot of people have been buying Planet Earth on HD DVD lately. On Amazon's sales rankings, it was at the 200-300s for the last 6 months, but this and last week, it jumped to like 20. It's at 15 right now. Blu-ray has stayed at the 50-100 range for the longest time.

What do people do when they buy an HDM player? Well... they buy Planet Earth of course, and show it off to their friends! Plenty of new HD DVD players must have been sold recently.

Either that, or there's a sale that I don't know about.

That doesn't make sense. Let me try this again, I'm saying that 4% of the overall difference as it stands now is about 100,000 discs. Using your numbers, 35% of 3.7 million is 1.295 million. 39% is 1.44 million. A difference of 1480,000 (so granted, I was a bit off). The point I was trying to make was that while in an increasingly growing hold, it's not as though it's completely insurmountable by any means.

Quote :
"you do know what i mean right?"

I do. I'm just saying it's interesting that all this is going on while significantly more Blu-ray players keep entering the market, probably more than the 66:33 margin that the sales figures are showing, which could mean any number of things.

Quote :

Also, per Amazon, the HD DVD player was the more desired Customer Vote holiday option when compared to the Blu-ray player. Then again, nothing really substantial can be pulled from that.

Oh, sorry, my math behind that was this: Since inception, Blu-ray has sold 60% of all HDM, while HD DVD has 40% of all HDM sold (as reported by Nielsen Videoscan). If the gap only amounts to a difference of 100k, then 300k Blu-ray movies have ever been sold, and 200k HD DVD movies have ever been sold.

i think its ridiculous to assume that most everyone who buys a ps3 is going to continue watching DVDs instead of BluRay, if the bluray disc is available.

Most everyone that has netflix is gonna flip the switch that swaps out all their dvds for bluray and if they're in blockbuster, i'm sure they'll just grab the bluray disc instead of opting for the lower quality dvd

I just think its very arbitrary and beyond that, counter-intuitive to say something like, "ps3 doesn't count as a real bluray player since most people will only play games on it"

they might primarily play games on it, but that doesnt mean that it didn't just obsolete their dvd player also

I got the Die Hard collection on Bluray. I've only watch the first one, and its really awesome. I have seen that movie so many damn times and I'll be damned if there was a lot of shit I never really picked up on because of the resolution, and probably because of the bigger screen. So pumped to have these movies in HD now.

^ Maybe its because the HD DVD player was only like 70 bucks and the blue ray was still up near 200-300 (I can't remember). You can't get any substantial info from that at all.

Damn though, bummed that Anchorman isn't coming to blu ray. That would have been a purchase for me.
