Was cleaning up my grandfathers house today and found 2 old bayonet's.

Looked up what gun they attach to and found the gun I want to search for. Pretty rare.

m1874 French Gras Musket Rifle.

So the search begins. Forget Civil War stuff. French-Indian War now.

To be fair I don't believe that's a French-Indian War rifle.

French expeditions. my bad.

and yes...ADD indeed. Found a 357 magnum I THINK for the grips.

and this rifle will be a tough find...for a decent price.

^ordered a pair and something else from ruger, but one item was backordered and I didn't want to wait, so I cancelled the order.

Well I went out and bought pair and then 2 pair came in from ruger. It's only a few bucks so not worth my time to pay to ship back.

I was wondering if anyone would get my status. that exchange was hilarious.

ahaha, I hadn't seen this response to muppet morgan:

i purchased a .22 ruger for plinking and love it

now i'm considering something with actual stopping power...though i'd like y'all's opinion

i'd like something with more affordable ammo, which means 9mm...right? .45 seems to be the best self-defense option, but it looks like ammo (depending on the market, where you're getting it from, etc) can be up to twice the price (and is usually at least another 80%)

the debate seems to be that 9mm is at best, the bare minimum for self defense and that it's not reliable for that purpose...true?

and if y'all think 9mm would still be a good purchase, what should i look for? i don't mind buying an older gun, a newer one, whatever, but i'm definitely looking for the best bang for your buck (pun not/intended)

thoughts?

Shot placement over shot size when talking pistol ammo. There's been a few more or less unscientific reviews of encounter data to evaluate the amount of ammo used to stop actions or drop people and it comes down to what you're more comfortable using. I can try to drag one up if you're interested.

I like to quote a buddy of mine who is a former special forces soldier when it come to .45 v 9mm. When I asked him about that one day he said to me, "people that say 9mm isn't enough haven't killed people". He carries a Glock 19 FWIW.

All "normal" handgun cartridges are inadequate. 9mm is no more inadequate than is .45 ACP, particularly with good bullets.

9mm typically delivers more kinetic energy and 9mm pistols generally have more capacity than do .45s. Look at the ballistics gelatin tests (there are some good ones on YouTube) of common handgun rounds if you think there's a meaningful difference.

I shoot a .45, and I will say flat-out that I don't think there's any meaningful difference between 9mm/.40/.45. I think .357 SIG is a little hotter, but it's the same bullet diameter as 9mm, and...well, how much penetration is useful if you aren't defending yourself against 450-lb giants wearing leather jackets?

If you start talking about .454 Casull, .45 Colt (long Colt), .500 S&W, etc, then yeah, there's a meaningful difference...but I'd feel about as well equipped with a 9mm as I do with my .45 (and if I was in the market for a new pistol, strictly for self-defense, I'd get a 9mm, or MAYBE a .40, just for the ammo capacity. The only reason I shoot .45 is because I like drilling paper at the range with a 1911.)

*I know a guy who shot two guys 7 and 8 times each with .40 S&W hollow pts. They were all torso shots except for one to the head. They both lived.

the way I see it, if there were an "obvious choice" between the common handgun calibers there wouldn't be a raging debate.

I think I'm gonna be picking up a compact steel-frame 9mm soon myself. Thinking about a Kahr MK9 elite or a Sig P239 sas. I feel there's a big hole in my skill/preparedness/hobby/wallet without a 9mm. Love my SA 1911 and Glock 32 but it's time to try getting tight with and carrying a slim 9mm.

I would dive on a H&K P7 if I could find one

^^ Those were some really lucky guys.

As said before, it's about shot placement. A .22lr can kill a person just like a 9mm, .38, .357, .40, or .45. Ideally, I'd recommend to go with the highest caliber you are most comfortable and accurate with. It also helps to consider the economics behind this too since you should practice routinely, so consider ammo cost as well.

9mm opens to about .65'' in most HP
.40 opens to about .75" in most HP
.45 opens to about .85" in most HP

9mm delivers more energy, .45 makes a (slightly) bigger hole.

Lemme see how much I have when I get back from NYC I may get your ak

And yes most hand gun rounds vary more by load then they do by caliber as far as muzzle energy is concerned.

I mean my co-worker was making fun of my slow .45acp bullets and so I let him shoot my 165grain +p rounds (that shoot faster than a standard load 9) and he shut up.

Most automatic rounds shoot 500ft-lbs +/-100 even 10mm is weak now unless you load your own.

45 long colt is "cheating" as that round was made for regular powder not modern smokeless (but can hold the pressure of smokeless just fine) and is usually only loaded to 450ish ft-lbs but yeah revolver rounds tend to be more powerful save .38special

Most 45 colt isnt even loaded that hot.

Be careful most 45 colt has pretty thin brass compared to something like 44mag which was designed to be a powerhouse from the get go.

There is a variety of pretty stout 10mm out there.

Ill never own a 40 and cant hit shit with a 1911.

stopped in a shop today and they had several unlabeled ziploc bags of JHP bullets that looked like .451". the guy didn't know what they weighed and didn't have a scale handy. good price, so i took my chances and bought two bags (i think 50/bag). got home and they turned out to be 185 gr .451", which is just what i was looking for. i'm not sure what brand they are. possibly magtech. the jacket is a yellowish gold color instead of the normal copper color. the inside of the hollowpoint is bare exposed lead.

need to decide on a powder to pair them with and work up a load that will give me sufficient velocity from my 5" 1911 to use them for defense. might go pick up some more if they work well

Think prices will spike now in the wake of a rash of high-profile shootings, culminating in this horrific shooting at the school today?

In other words, should I buy now before the gun control debates get going in Washington, especially while they're kind of occupied by "fiscal cliff" concerns...or will it already be too late as soon as the gun stores open tomorrow, with no deals to be had until we all forget and lose interest again?

You don't already have every gun you'd want?

I bet you've got a little bit of time (like at least a few weeks). The economy and budget/tax issues are too big for the government to turn their attention.

No, I get that there won't be any legislation for at least a while. There doesn't have to be legislation for people to start buying everything up and prices to rise.

I go to the range to FINALLY shoot my Sub-2000 in .40 S&W. Oddly, the first round wouldn't chamber. The second, third, and fourth round wouldn't chamber. I knew it wasn't the mag or the rounds, so I fold the gun in half so I can look at the barrel and feed ramp. My assumption was right; they replaced it with a damn 9mm barrel. A guy at the range happened to lend me a 9mm round. I chamber it and down range it went.

Now I gotta wait another month for them to correct this shit.
