you're the only one getting worked up about this...we're all rightfully so making fun of this stupid change by Pelosi...you however seem to really have your panties in a bunch about the Iraq War and seem to want to tie the Iraq War into any discussion about any topic, however unrelated...well there are plenty of threads about the Iraq War...if thats the only thing you want to talk about then take that shit to another thread...this thread has a pretty clear cut topic, which is Pelosi's food changes in Congress...everyone who doesn't have a hardon for Pelosi realizes that

Jesus tap-dancing Christ, calm the fuck down already. Judging your personal priorities to be absurd and imposing new ones upon you are two different things.

The only people I know who get more touchy about value judgments are hyper-PC liberals. Anything you'd care to tell us?

Uh, you made a thread about it. Obviously, it's your panties which are in a knot.

Meanwhile, you may have noticed I brought up other noteworthy issues of significance, If you could read, that is. How the fuck did you get into college?

the answer is in the question...its not that she made this a priority, its the timing of worrying about something that we all agree is not important while there are so many other pressing issues that really need attention.

it's like she just wanted to change something, and since it was clear that they're to damn inept to actually pose a meaningful challenge to the white house on serious issues, she decided to focus on cafeteria food.....well done, you left your mark pelosi.

^^Well then, good thing I'm not a Democrat or a liberal.

And, good thing conservatives never, ever do the same thing.

Oh, and good thing that the debate was whether or not the Liberal Lunch Tyranny was a good thing, and not whether this was a matter of tremendously stupid priorities to get all worked up over.

Phew - I think we dodged a bullet there, didn't we?

See now, this is at least a defensible response. And I agree with you, actually. This incident, as I pointed out above, is remarkably reflective of Pelosi's (non)-priorities.

Okay, I admit it - I walked in late and skimmed, and what I saw was complaining about left-wing lunch tyranny. Which is a stupid thing to get one's panties in a wad over.

However, on the balance, Pelosi's priorities are still dumber.

There, now everyone can agree and we can live in peace, love, and sunshine.

well plenty of threads in TSB arent necessarily regarding the most important issues in the world, but often just taking jabs at whatever opposite party, ie "pelosi pushes gourment menu" or "republican senator gets gay in bathroom"

neither have the significance of a war or 9/11 or something but they're all worth discussing to some length in tsb

they're also all just asking for trouble, but thats politics in general

^^ I more just get the feeling in the back of my head that a demagogue like Rush Limbaugh (or whoever) would trump this into, say, an "actual issue." Dwarfing any failures in the party he's cheering for.

So you'll have to forgive me if my automatic response is somewhat based upon this - using trivial shit to provoke a greater outrage than say, actually significant shit going on.

Note that I'm not accusing you of doing this - I'm more pointing out where I'm coming from.

^^^ FYI: This was reported yesterday on WRAL news. For whatever reason, it is not on WRAL.com today.

In any event, the House CAO issued a press release about this issue and The New York Times obviously thought the story to be newsworthy, among others.

"The changes, instituted last month, would barely rate a mention in, say, Berkeley, Calif. But to some people here they represent an elitist misuse of public funds, and possibly a bit of anti-industry propaganda.

In newspaper articles and on blogs, the menu has been mocked for including sushi and brie, foods critics seem to regard as pretentious esoterica. Questions have been raised over whether the decision to stock a particular brand of organic yogurt was motivated by political donations. Writers have griped about allowing Ms. Pelosi to decide what they should eat. And some have expressed outrage at the notion that tax money is paying for all this frippery."

Maybe you and some others prefer "sushi and brie" and "couscous and tofu" for lunch but a lot of people don't. And they certainly don't want their food choices made for them at an increased price.

- French Fries
- Cornbread
- Onion Rings
- Mashed Potatos

Leave it to the reactionary neo-con TWW pundits to turn cafeteria food into a fucking partisan issue.

i think you might be missing the point that ties this into socialism/nanny state

the premise is, the government thinks you, me, and everyone else (except for them of course) are too damn stupid to think for themselves...we obviously cant responsibly choose what we eat, so they tell us what we should eat...you shouldnt eat trans fats, so lets ban them...after all you're too dumb to make that choice on your own, don't worry though, we'll tell you everything you should do

i can understand the trans-fat argument. As you can make the same foods w/o using trans-fats. Like how there is regulations that your ground beef can not be say 10% dog. Trans-fat oils were a way to increase a businesses bottom line at the expense of the consumer's health. Unfortunately, a lot of people are not aware of difference.

From my take on the argument though it does not sound like they are eliminating necessarily the diversity of foods that many enjoy. Merely adding some new "healthful" alternatives.

Dude... do you actually know what you're talking about?

Partially hydrogenated ("trans"-fats) oils were substituted as an alternative to saturated fat. They were used to eliminate saturated fats which are prevalent in baked goods (think: cookies, donuts, etc) due to the big hubub over that. People wanted the texture of saturated fats - like those found in lard, butter, etc. - without the actual saturated fats, because everyone was panicking about saturated fats. Enter: trans-fats, which had a long shelf-life and could deliver rough the same consistency as saturated fats for baking.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_fats#Presence_in_food

Quote :
"Animal-based fats were once the only trans fats consumed, but by far the largest amount of trans fat consumed today is created by the processed food industry as a side-effect of partially hydrogenating unsaturated plant fats (generally vegetable oils). These partially hydrogenated fats have displaced natural solid fats and liquid oils in many areas, notably in the fast food, snack food, fried food and baked good industries.

Partially hydrogenated oils have been used in food for many reasons. Partial hydrogenation increases product shelf life and decreases refrigeration requirements. Because baking often requires semi-solid fats to suspend solids at room temperature, partially hydrogenated oils can replace the animal fats traditionally used by bakers (such as butter and lard). They are also an inexpensive alternative to other semi-solid oils such as palm oil. Because partially hydrogenated plant oils can replace animal fats, the resulting products can be consumed (barring other ingredient and preparation violations) by adherents to Kashrut (kosher) and Halal, as well as by adherents to vegetarianism in Buddhism, ahimsa in Jainism and Hinduism, veganism, and other forms of vegetarianism."

In other words, it was a response to consumer demand: consumers wanted the same consistency and texture in their foods without the saturated fats. Food companies delivered. This was not just for CEO Snidely Whiplash's bottom line.

Now we realize that we're fucked, because the substitute product is worse, and everyone is panicking about trans-fats. We can all see where this one is going.
