So I ended up running about 1/4 mile of cat5e/coax/speaker wire in the house and now it is time to put together the network closet. I have 16 cat5e leads coming in. I want to get a wall mount patch panel. since I don't have a lot of room in the closet. All the leads are coming in from the back of the closet wall.
I thinking either a 24 port:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CAT5E-PATCH-PANEL-24-PORT-WITH-WALL-BRACKET-NEW_W0QQitemZ330261518584QQihZ014QQcategoryZ44992QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

or 2x12 ports:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Ortronics-OR-PMP5E12H-12-port-Cat5e-Patch-Panel-NEW_W0QQitemZ170249826824QQihZ007QQcategoryZ44992QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Anything I should look out for when it comes to patch panels, or are they pretty much all the same? I'm guessing I would just mount my 8-port D-Link (Don't need all 16 yet) on a shelf and run small cat5e wires to it from the panel.

i need to find a small rackmount that is about 12-15U high and over 29" deep for some fileservers i have. i'll also be replacing all of the phone lines in the house with cat6 eventually.

while i do the cat6 to the rooms (prob 2 per room), should i go ahead and do rg-6 or anything else?

One of those patch panels I liked and one of them I absolutely hated...I can't remember which one and why right now...

Here is a nice write up:

I hope by the end of the weekend, I can get most of the RG6 lines live and outlet plates installed. I still have to order a patch panel etc. for the network closet.

if you can get a cheap spool on ebay, I'd run fiber between all the rooms. it'll be consumer grade one day

Update. I finally got my patch panel from eBay today. I also got an outdoor enclosure box to house all of the coax lines. Now I'm looking to get a coax termination panel for the outdoor enclosure. I hope to get this done soon.

I just wanted to thank bobby and mellocj for clearing up the misinterpretations of networking up.

I would also like to offer that the 3750 switches have the auto-mdx (never knew that was the name of the technology) built in them, and its pretty damn convenient.

Also, for emphasis:

Quote :
"Also, you don't really understand trunking either. In switching, trunking has nothing to do with ports, but refers to muxing traffic from multiple VLANs onto a single physical or logical port while still keeping traffic from different VLANs separate. you don't "trunk ports," you "trunk VLANs.""

Bobby - do you know if ISL is still supported, or is it all dot1q now?

In regard to Evan, I think you are describing port channels while thinking of VLANs. You might have the two concepts mixed up.

I cant wait to start the CCNA wireless!

To be fair, I find the term "trunking" to be used by sysops people and documentation when describing link aggregation. Every once in a while our sysops guys will use it, and I'll double take

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_aggregation

^ISL is still supported, but I've never heard of a large-scale deployment of it in recent history.

I mess with this nerd at work by deliberately saying stuff that is wrong just so that his head explodes.

I think some people intentionally do this on message boards, but I digress that people who self promote themseves so much could actually be that clueless. :sigh: (not speaking about any one in particular).

I just got Dish Network installed 2 weeks ago and they actually only need 1 line to run their HD DVR, but I can use the other coax line to send signal to a second TV.
