(re: the painting of Lot having sex with his daughters in the cave)

yeah, i never noticed the other people before. that is odd. i also never noticed the fox. and 1616 or not, that dog is just ridiculous. It would be interesting to hear someone who knows a bit about art history explain what the hell is going
i think the position of the wine bottle (without a glass) is just trying to show the motion how she'd finished pouring her old man another drink, with her apparent carelessness indicating a lack of clear judgment or even inebriation on her part.
but im no art history major, that's just my guess.

the girl on the left is the older sister who had the idea and slept with him first and is getting him drunk. we know this because she is on the red cloth. the younger is still a virgin since she is on a blue cloth. The burning in the background should be thier past of the burning of Sodom and Gommorah. The ugly dog is probably owned by the person who commisioned the painting. I don't know about the fox, but most likely it and the trees are representing that they are in the wild and far from civilization and other people - i.e. mateable males, and thus the reason for what they did. 7/26/2009 1:06:40 AM

It looks to me that the two people in the upper left are inside a cave about to get it on. So my guess would be that it is a depiction of what will happen after the drunken cheese eating. 7/26/2009 5:27:45 AM

that was the year Hendrik Goltzius painted Lot and His Daughters
okay so i got tired of waiting for a professional, so i looked it up:
Goltzius was a famous engraver and painter in the early Dutch baroque period -- his paintings reflected the sensibilities of that era. Like many of that time, he used bible stories to demonstrate his skill at painting nudes.
Goltzius was also part of the new school of "Mannerism" in which the artists attempted to surpass the earlier Renaissance masters by placing an "emphasis on movement, emotion and drama." This resulted in exaggerated contours of the body "with elongated limbs and pronounced physical contortions".

Furthermore, according to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam where the original painting is displayed:
the "other people" in the upper left, is actually a future representation of Lot and a daughter after the seduction had taken place. Lot is visibly distraught and/or exhausted, holding his hand on his head, while one of his daughters is covering him with a blanket.
[EDIT]wolfpackgrrr:Bingo.[/EDIT]
The fox in the background represents a "serious warning" against "female cunning"... the dog in the foreground symbolizes "vigilance, and warns against immoral conduct" ... the still life of the table with bread and cheese is something of a 17th century "shout out" to contemporary still life painters such as Floris van Dijck.
