Seriously.

Move Galaxy to the current Harris Teeter location.

Win, win.

It closes when the new one opens. No clue what would happen to the building--it's probably owned by the mall so I guess they'd decide if it could be a large freestanding tenant (a la the Crate and Barrel at Southpoint), subdivided, or razed. Perhaps it could become another grocery with a small footprint, like a Trader Joe's or an Aldi.

"CARY - The end of the Galaxy is almost here. The venerable independent movie theater ends its run with final showings on Sunday, Nov. 11, its management announced on Wednesday night.
Developer York Properties plans to replace the Galaxy Cinema and a nearby office building with a Harris Teeter super market, according to public records.

The business has showed independent and foreign films at the Village Square Shopping Center for eight years, its managers said. News of its potential closure inspired hundreds to come to the theater or show their support on Facebook, but the developer has not yet changed course.

A press release from the Galaxy praised the developer's vision, and prepared fans for a bittersweet goodbye.

“Yes, it is very difficult to close a business this popular and in demand, especially when it is the only independent theater in Cary,” the release stated.

“We hope that all our patrons will visit us one last time this weekend to enjoy a movie and treat themselves to the best concessions in town.”

The release also alluded to the construction of two other buildings near the site, but the developer hasn't yet confirmed further plans for redevelopment of the center."

I went to see The Master today. I was all excited, commenting how I was glad it was still showing as showtimes hadn't worked out that I could before now, and he responds, "I'm glad for you too cause it's a great movie, and we're closing Sunday." "whaaaaaat!? nooooo" Very sad they aren't able to stick it out til Spring.

These are but a few of the movies I saw in this building. What was it called before Galaxy? Imperial 6 or something?

It's kind of funny how people come out of the wood work to save something when the end is near. Perhaps if all of you people had cared this much over the years this place could pay its bills.

Move over. GTFOOTW and let a business that can thrive make use of this space.

This type of theater should be closer to ncsu anyhow, but even then, our own cinema at Witherspoon already appeals to independent and documentary films for students; who'd most likely see this kinda stuff.

^^ that's cause we already have witherspoon... Students going to cary to see some documentary or foreign film is a bit out of the way for that demographic; even then, it should really be centered more towards Raleigh area rather than Cary.

Or the very least show more profitable films to help fund the independent showings more.

and Downtown Raleigh isn't exactly that far away from NCSU...

working at Galaxy Cinema for 4 years was a life saver

there were a lot of cool people there, both selling and buying tickets

90% of the population that go to our independent movie theater in Charleston are old people. Very few student aged customers.

Witherspoon is not competition for Galaxy. It wasn't competition for Studio I & II on Hillsborough.

yeah, what are all the independent, foreign, and documentaries that are being shown at Witherspoon? I never thought of the Galaxy and Witherspoon as competition when I was a student, nor do I now.

i never went to the Rialto or the Colony much, but they seemed to skew older, too

i'm in Portland now and their independent theaters attract more youthful audiences

i would've guessed portland skewed more towards the 30-40 crowd, what with the dream of the 90s being alive there and all

fair and kinda accurate assumption, but 30s is still youthful compared to the senior citizen dominated Raleigh art houses

there seems to be a larger film going scene here in general

there's more theaters that show indie, foreign and classic films

the Portland Art Museum screens movies daily in conjunction with a local film school; lot of seniors there, but they show some really cool stuff. they just had a music series and played Wild Style and Downtown 81 and some cool recording of a Stax Records revue performance from the late 60s somewhere in Scandinavia.

has anyone mentioned Galaxy's popcorn yet?

BTW, the lady in the video game to Galaxy 2-3 times a week for as long as it's been open. It's really sad to leave those folks without a theater.

Also, while I try not to talk about how I would have done things differently since I left, I ran that shit for seven years and we never ONCE showed a Twilight film. JUSSSAYIN'.

UPDATE: I have just been informed that they put that poster out for the last night as a joke and had no idea the news mentioned it

"CARY, N.C. --Cary's Galaxy Cinema screened its final film Sunday night after eight years in business. Employees say they were told the theater would be demolished to make way for a new Harris Teeter grocery store. The theater specialized in showing rare independent films and Bollywood movies.

"There are other theaters in the area that show quality movies, but not so many at one time and one place," Esma Margaret Sederoff said.

Loyal customers, like Sederoff, returned Sunday for one final showing.

"We got plenty of Harris Teeters around, but we have very few independent theaters to go to, so, sort of sad," Berney Golden said.

There's been talk of shutting it down for months, but employees only got an official notice Wednesday.

"I am going to be unemployed," Projection manager Matt Gronke said. "I'm going to file for unemployment. I'm going to be looking around for jobs, but in this economy, we'll see what happens."

It's Gronke's job to make sure the film starts rolling on time, or at least it was his job. Most theaters are ditching the old film and going digital. Galaxy was one of the last to do it the old-fashioned way, and it was the only place with so many offbeat films under one roof.

"I mean, you're going to have to go to Raleigh, you're going to have to go to Chapel Hill, Durham, The Chelsea, Carolina, places that are a 30-40 minute drive," Gronke said, "so it's going to stink for a lot of people.""

When I worked at Park Place 16 like 10 years ago there was a Matt Gronke working there. I remember he jumped through a large cardboard advertisement thing on my first day and the manager kinda chuckled.

...this has the be the same guy...

edit: to be clear he destroyed the damn thing. It was awesome.
