Hard to really fault anyone for Chubb's ranking out of HS. I think he had been playing LB and everyone knew he was going to be switching to DE in college. It's a very similar situation to McNeil, but you're talking about a guy playing MLB, RB, and KR in HS at 270+ lbs moving to DT. His athleticism and size will translate well there and the upside is apparent.

Yeah there’s a lotta reasons a player might be great in college but not be a 5*. it’s not always a case of the analysts getting it wrong because there’s so many other factors at play too.

How the hell did UNC have a better class (based on rankings) than us?

With that said, I trust DD development way better than the hat.

they do have a higher ranked class...that said, it's very very close. on rivals they are 23 and we are 34th. but the way i've seen it explained, that's basically the difference of one 3* player...as in, take one of their 3* and put him in our class and we have roughly the same ranking as them or better. don't think there's a ton of separation in that part of the team rankings. also, worth noting that TE transfer Angeline doesn't count in the recruiting rankings and the JUCO DT we got hasn't been evaluated by Rivals. granted, i'm sure UNC has a few players that fall into that category as well.

edit: and on scout they're only 3 spots ahead of us. again...that's virtually indistinguishable really. this is a very good class for us.

Also, half of unc's 4* guys are wide receivers and all of then are on offense. Id take our well rounded class 10/10 times over theirs. Thats a typical fedora class. Nothing but offense

Wilson was UNC's best commit and we took him. I'll give them credit for Adams and Barnes, who are both really solid prospects, but Adams's father works at UNC as a DL coach, so it was kind of a no-brainer he was going there.

Angeline was a 4* TE 2 years ago but doesn't count in our rankings, but I wouldn't sweat the recruiting team rankings too much. We took an average-sized class and landed a record number of 4* recruits, with some filling immediate needs(CB, DL, RB) and others at key positions(QB, LB), not to mention our K is considered a top 10 at his position.

Also, the '19 class is shaping up to be a big-time defensive class if we land some of the guys we reportedly lead for. Now to just hope for another solid season on the field and another year of beating UNC to keep recruiting momentum rolling.

one thing to consider is that 2017's on field performance is probably more likely to translate to momentum in the 2019 class. 2018's recruiting was well underway before we got good momentum on the field and put up a top 25 season. it probably was too late for that to have much impact in the '18 class. so if you're looking at on-field results and hoping they translate to recruiting success, i think we could see a boost from that in 2019.

Just saw on twitter where someone named Issac Duffy, a DB from Clayton, held a presser in a NC State Football T. Cant find him on 247. Is he a walk-on or something?

Interesting that I saw Toudle listed as a WR/TE, but it sounds like we're expecting him to be a WR for us.

IICR, from the few pictures that I saw of him, he didnt appear to have the frame that could take the extra weight that our TE's typically have. Maybe be wrong.

Yeah sounds like he's expected to stay at WR. Honestly wonder if some of that isn't because we're only taking 1 TE this year and we have 2 TE's that list us as their leader that we're fairly high on.

Sounds like we've missed on all of our early QB options.

Kind of surprising we're not having more success at QB given our current guys in the pros, how well Finley has looked, and how we'll have a QB competition next year with only 2 guys on roster.

Sounds like we're in much better shape in the '20 class at QB though.

lol...we just signed a 4* QB last season and signed a top 20 QB the season before and we're apparently looking really good for Luke Doty for 2020 and hes supposed to be one of the top QB's in the nation.

QB recruiting is the least of my worries

I think Finley will blow up this year given his weapons and help out in that effort.

I expect BIG things from Devin Leary as well. He's RS'ing this year and may be a 4 year starter for us so we probably wont need a QB for a while.

In fact, Dunn only played 8 games at Wide Receiver, but Dunn finished his Senior year at Sanderson with 25 receptions for 415 yards and 5 touchdowns, leading his team in all three categories. He also earned CAP 7 All-Conference honors, in a conference where quite a few other wide receivers had committed to Division-I schools."

I'm not worried about a QB this year, but I do think it's a wise approach to land a QB in each class. Hopefully we'll find a decent option in camp this Summer or some late-bloomer, but for next year we're looking at 2 scholarship QBs.

Then let's say Leary win the jobs, is McKay going to stick around as a back-up given he's older? I mean I hope Leary wins the job and balls out, but nothing wrong with having your scholarship spacing correct to afford RS opportunities.

I mean McClendon was a 4* QB too, didn't really pan out for us. Not saying Leary won't be a big time player for us, just saying I'd like to have more options in case he isn't. Plus a lot of the top programs are bringing in 4* and 5* QBs each year behind other 4* and 5* guys. QB is such an important position, can never have enough good ones.

yeah. we don't need to hit the panic button on QB, but it's never a bad idea to make sure you've got options for the most important position.

^Really? I think we have 3 scholarship offers still out(per 247) and 1 of those has us listed as "cold". So looks like we have 2 3* QBs we've offered and 1 3* QB that we might offer(think he either just visited recently or is visiting soon).

Two of our top choices just committed this week(UF and FSU).

^Haha, exactly.

Even from some of the premium boards, it sounds a lot like we're "back to square one" with a lot of the QBs we offered already off the board.

I mean we've missed on 5 guys we've offered so far, and I know we just offered a 4* QB out of Oregon(Johnson) that we have little to no shot at.

Seems like our only legit chances right now are 3* Jefferson(most consider an Arkansas lean) and 3* Johnson that we are in his top 5 but have really waited on deciding whether or not to offer him.

What 3* QB's have we had success with?

Rivers and Wilson were 2*.
Glennon and Brissett were 4*.

Can't think of any other than Finley that were notable 3* QBs.

Hell even Marcus Stone and Pete Thomas were 4* QBs, same with McClendon.

Think our last 2 3* QBs before McKay are now our starting slot WR and one of our top TEs.

5'10, 170. #43 player in NC according to 247 but had offers from Michigian, Penn State, Clemson, VT, WVU, Minnesota, Iowa etc...

I am always a fan of having multiple players with different spellings of the same name. I know they aren’t on the current roster but Jaylen Samuels, Jalan McClendon, and now Jalen Frazier. Jacoby Brissett and Jakobi Meyers.

^^^Hate to rain on the parade just a bit, because I'm stoked we landed Frazier because I think his recruitment was just ramping up, but he didn't have offers from all of those teams.

Per 247...
Notable Offers: Duke, Maryland, Michigan, Syracuse, WVU
Schools showing interest: Clemson, Penn State, S. Carolina, UNC, VT

He didn't actually have reported offers to those last schools, though I feel like some of them would have come eventually. Still hoping we can beat out Clemson for Battle(who we almost landed before his recruitment exploded).

i don't care what schools offer our prospects. Some of our best players ever had garbage offers. If DD likes them, i'm cool with it. Get them in, develop them and see what they've got. Watch the kids tape...he'll be a perfect nickelback for us

while true, this is by far the exception and not the rule. i get the point you're making. but looking at offers and rankings is a decent metric to use when thinking about what type of recruit we're talking about or what "level" that recruit is on.

It's all about perspective.

Yeah we've had some 2* guys that didn't get a ton of offers(recently: Adams, Samuels) that had great careers here.

Those guys just didn't do the camp scene and committed to us really early in the process. So it's somewhat similar here. I do trust our staff in finding talent though, esp. early. Just wanted to correct the post with a little more accurate info. I think there was a chance that "interest" could have flipped to offers eventually, but I know Clemson keeps guys on the back-burner in case they miss on their stars(as they did with Palmer last year). I know we're going head-to-head with them right now for a TE(Deal) and CB(Battle), who both have committable offers.

But we also have some success with 4* guys that have offers from just about everyone(recently: Hines, Brissett, Street).

In RE: Stars

I remember hearing a story from Mike Golic about his son. Freshman and sophomore year he was getting a lot of attention and went to a big camp. He won some big award for the best player at his position there and was a 4*. He committed to ND so he stopped camping; apparently after that his stars dropped big time and Golic felt like it was b/c they wanted his $$$ to camp.

yeah that plays a role...you go to all the camps, do well, get more eyes on you and there's a great chance you go up in the rankings. don't do many camps and/or commit early and you may not get as much attention so there's a chance your ranking drops or doesn't go up even when it should.

There are obvious flaws in the ranking system. And it’s far from perfect. But as a general rule, it’s a pretty decent measure of how good a recruit is and how good a whole class is. They get it wrong sometimes for sure. But they get it right a lot.

There is also the situation where by committing to 'Bama your stars go up just because well if they want you, then you have to be a 5-star. Then it is like "oh he is only going to NC State? 3 star."

I think the "oh it's just NC State" thing has faded a bit the last few years. Can't remember the last recruit we landed that actually lost a star after committing to us, hell even last year we had guys like Graves picking up a 4th star after being committed to us for almost a year.

Can't really blame the "Bama bump". You know they have an eye for talent, you know they can recruit any kid in the country, so if they're using a scholarship spot on a player, that player is likely pretty good.

I try to pay more attention to the confirmed offer list, just because the ratings are so subjective and can really have as much to do with other kids at your position versus the talent level you're at. I also hate that the camp scene is really what drives a lot of these rankings versus stats.

I mean, example....Brandon Barnes. He goes to all these camps, gets lauded as a 5* ATH and has guys like Pete Carroll flying across the country to recruit him during his JR season. Then his SR season he's the 2nd string RB on his team, has marginal stats, and is a solid defensive player but nothing special. He tested well but didn't really have the "it" factor on the field, so he's a 5* player that should have been a 2* or 3*(plus he should have been forced by our coaches to play defense).

I think a lot of the guys we've been recruiting the last year or so are about to all get some bumps in recruiting. Yeah it helps they started landing offers from Bama, Clemson, tOSU, etc, but a lot of it is just re-evaluation, camps, etc. There are a LOT of kids to evaluate, so not sure of a better way to do it, and not sure how much you can really tell from HS highlight tapes when you don't know much about the level of competition they're playing.

I don't think there is any doubt that Thomas and Battle are about to get 4th stars given they did well at the Nike camp this weekend and their offer lists are impressive.

The Bama bump probably comes from knowing they'll be coached by Saban and his staff which is hands down the best in the country. It's essentially the G league of the NBA. Other schools can't expect guys give it 100% in the dog days of summer in a weight lifting session. Saban doesn't have to placate anyone, try showing up late to a team meeting.
