yea saturday in greenville he talked about how he is not in support of drugs however he is also definitely not in support of the millions of federal dollars we waste each year on 'drug prevention' that is not working/not functioning properly.

According to Drudge, Paul is at 11% in SC according to a new CNN poll that hasn't been released.

I think it will be flying over Raleigh closer to 1:30. Originally it was supposed to launch at 8am, but it didn't launch until 9:23am according to the website.

Thanks for that note. Didn't think about that one. This map probably was made assuming that earlier lift-off.

article up on CNN now. and of course a phone poll, so its very possible that paul might have a slight advantage in those that dont have land lines and thus are never utilized in these polls. either way 11% is big

AP Story:
Quote :
"RALEIGH -- A 200-foot long blimp bearing the name of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is flying over North Carolina.

Spokesman Bryce Henderson said the blimp took off from Elizabeth City just before 9 a.m. It's expected to fly over Raleigh and Greensboro in the afternoon, and over Charlotte just before nightfall.

The aerial billboard is emblazoned on one side with "Who is Ron Paul? Google Ron Paul." The other side reads "Ron Paul Revolution."

The blimp is being paid for by supporters who aren't officially connected to Paul's campaign. The blimp is scheduled to float up the East Coast past major cities.

Paul is a Texas congressman and former Libertarian who stands apart from the other GOP presidential contenders by opposing the Iraq war. He has low poll numbers but soaring support among anti-government voters on the Internet. "

Nice balanced coverage there.

I'm just saying, since when is limited-federal government synonymous with anti-government?

It makes it sound like he wants to blow up federal buildings or something.

Or rather, like his supporters do.

Paul is getting fucked over by the media giants and uber wealthy individuals that have a black hand behind the scenes. Screw popular opinion we gotta preserve the status quo so we can stay rich and powerful .

Paul's ideas which are great for America as a whole and the common people are not necessarily good for those running the current establishment.

Can someone help me out with Ron Paul's views on the environment. I read the blurb on his site about it, but it was mostly stop government subsidy of environmentally harmful actions. Just wondering if anyone had any more depth on it.

His view is generally about enforcing property rights - basically, a company doesn't have the right to dump toxic waste on your lawn without your permission. Same would go for say, a lake that you own, or whatnot.

How this would actually translate into a broader application to say, airbourne effluents is anyone's guess - especially since there are just some things you can't keep from getting out. But that's generally his stance.

I can dig up a link if you want, but that's generally been his position in interviews.

Today when I was waiting in line at a Circuit City for a Wii at 5:30 in the cold/wet morning, there was a large and diverse group of people. When my boyfriend went for breakfast, since we were only getting 1 wii between the two of us it allowed one of us to come and go as we pleased, the group saw the Edwards bump sticker on the back of my car. Several people starting talking about how they wouldn't vote for a politician who wasted money on a blimp. I hadn't the slightest clue what they were talking about until I clicked on this thread about 30 secs ago.

i agree making voting decisions based off a blimp is silly, but since i didn't know anything about it, i was hardly going to jump into a conversation between a bunch of random strangers to call them idiots for the assumptions they were making.

they said they'd prefer a candidate who wasn't spending money like that/couldn't afford that, so atleast they would be able to identify with being hard up for money. they wanted someone who would take less of our money in taxes than this blimp guy obviously would.

what about other government supported forms of scientific research?

First, before I say anything, let me state that I agree 100% that the space program has given us huge advances in technology over the years.

HOWEVER, we dont NEED a *space program* to do these things. Sure they came about because we had a space program, but we could still advance our technology just as fast without sending spending the extra millions/billions on the things NASA does that dont really improve our technology.

In designing new shuttles and satellites etc. as well as trying to overcome obstacles they forsee them having, THAT Is where we make the gains. Not in actually building, manning, and sending them to space. The information we gain on that side is minimal as far as advancing our technology and creating something worth having. We could easily keep technology advancing as fast as it is now by putting only a portion of the money into something like NASA that we are now, purely for the goal of research and development without the side that drains the money for no reason.

The future is space exploration but in order accelerate technology advances the gov't needs to take away the barriers of entry that prevent the marvels of living in a capitalist society to naturally promote space technology. NASA is bloated with bureacracy and inefficient.

Private companies with profit incentive hold the key for the next generation space vehicles.

NASA is pretty remarkably efficient when it comes to non-manned spaceflight. The bang for the buck factor there is actually pretty amazing - see, the Mars Exploration Rovers (which have now hit 10x their design lifetime), Hubble, etc. It's manned spaceflight that's so wasteful in terms of research output vs. cost - namely because of the extreme engineering that goes into it.

This is where I think the private sector could step in. Let adventurous people take the elevated risk that we wouldn't acceptably put on astronauts - the same way we did in the early days of flight. These people paved the way for mass air transportation by taking risks deemed unacceptable to the general population - the same can apply here, too.

Although for those concerned about RP potentially slashing NASA to nothing, based on his interviews in several venues, I think he (reasonably) asserts that issues like NASA and the EPA are much further down his list of agencies to slash than say, foreign military bases, exploding entitlement spending, corporate welfare, and everything else. In other words, he's got much bigger fish to fry.

Sure, and I agree for the most part. My point was more just towards the specific types of endeavors that NASA engages in. Human spaceflight is an order of magnitude more costly if only because of the engineering constraints and the additional payload requirements for say, life support and re-entry. NASA does a pretty good job at basic science, whereas with what you point out, applied exploration could easily be done by the private sector.

Difference of emphasis.

Message from Ron Paul post-Tea Party:

Quote :
"December 17, 2007

What a day! I am humbled and inspired, grateful and thrilled for this
vast outpouring of support.

On just one day, in honor of the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea
Party, the new American revolutionaries brought in $6.04 million, another
one-day record. The average donation was $102; we had 58,407
individual contributors, of whom an astounding 24,915 were first-time donors.
And it was an entirely voluntary, self-organized, decentralized,
independent effort on the internet. Must be the "spammers" I keep hearing
about!

The establishment is baffled and worried, and well they should be. They
keep asking me who runs our internet fundraising and controls our
volunteers. To these top-down central planners, a spontaneous order like
our movement is science-fiction. But you and I know it's real: as real as
the American people's yearning for freedom, peace, and prosperity, as
real as all the men and women who have sacrificed for our ideals, in
the past and today.

And how neat to see celebrations all across the world, with Tea Parties
from France to New Zealand. This is how we can spread the ideals of
our country, through voluntary emulation, not bombs and bribes. Of
course, there were hundreds in America.

As I dropped in on a cheering, laughing crowd of about 600 near my home
in Freeport, Texas, I noted that they call us "angry." Well, we are
the happiest, most optimistic "angry" movement ever, and the most
diverse. What unites us is a love of liberty, and a determination to fix what
is wrong with our country, from the Fed to the IRS, from warfare to
welfare. But otherwise we are a big tent.

Said the local newspaper
(http://www.thefacts.com/story.lasso?ewcd=36475b4d132fc0a1): "The
elderly sat with teens barely old enough to vote. The faces were black,
Hispanic, Asian and white. There was no fear in their voices as they spoke
boldly with each other about the way the country should be. Held close
like a deeply held secret, Paul has brought them out of the disconnect
they feel between what they know to be true and where the country has
been led."

Thanks also to the 500 or so who braved the blizzard in Boston to go to
Faneuil Hall. My son Rand told me what a great time he had with you.

A few mornings ago on LewRockwell.com, I saw a YouTube of a 14-year-old
boy that summed up our whole movement for me. This well-spoken young
man, who could have passed in knowledge for a college graduate, told how
he heard our ideas being denounced. So he decided to Google. He read
some of my speeches, and thought, these make sense. Then he studied US
foreign policy of recent years, and came to the conclusion that we are
right. So he persuaded his father to drop Rudy Giuliani and join our
movement.

All over America, all over the world, we are inspiring real change.
With the wars and the spying, the spending and the taxing, the inflation
and the credit crisis, our ideas have never been more needed. Please
help me spread them https://www.ronpaul2008.com/donate in all 50 states.
Victory for liberty! That is our goal, and nothing less.

Sincerely,

Ron"

I find myself liking this guy more and more every day. It's not just a matter of agreeing with his positions. It's the fact that he's the only straight shooter in the race. He's the only candidate whose words can be accepted at face value. He's the only candidate with a voting record that backs up his platform practically 100%. He's also an authority, and in some cases a respected author, on several critical issues facing our nation (fiscal responsibility, personal liberties, foreign policy).

Yeah most people haven't heard of this guy. Why would you? He doesn't advocate big government solutions and spending. He doesn't compromise principle - his voting record confirms that. Lobbyists don't even bother knocking on his door. Who else can say that? That's such a big part of why I support him and what he stands for. A man who went to Washington and DIDN'T let it change him. He's still fighting the same fight, but now people are listening.

I know he's still a longshot, but I can't help but throw my support to a person I believe represents real integrity in, of all places, the political arena. Now he's entered the fray at a critical point in our nation's history. I think the longer he stays in it, the better. Popular or not, his positions I think are in fact the way to go. I hope the rest of the American public is ready to listen.
