1.5mbps up, and it lets my brother in Germany watch a satisfactory high-definitionish slingbox stream of U-verse.

so i thought i read that there were some improvements coming to the DVR software, among which includes the option to only keep a certain number of shows. has anyone heard about that batch of updates, or when it's coming?

Yes, we are supposed to get updates to our DVR features:

http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=4800&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=30824

But they are rolling it out very slowly, which implies to me that they are having some problems with it.

That is because U-Verse already violates net neutrality, because their in-house video and phone data gets top priority over internet traffic across the VDSL link, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Arguably, the system could not work any other way. Seriously, who wants their DVR to stop recording just so their HULU video starts playing half a second faster?

Also, the argument made in that ars article is absurd: the threat that the law may change unfavorably in the near future is more than enough for me to change my behavior right now.

I have never found a webside that AT&T blocked. However, my RG did have a technical problem that caused some DNS lookups to fail, but I use google DNS anyway, so it didn't affect me, and the problem went away when the RG was updated.

I too live in Cary, yet tell foreigners I'm from Raleigh. While I recognize that satellite cities exist, I don't actually consider them to be wholly different cities, more like different regions within the greater Raleigh area.

No complaints from the internet and standard def tv so far. Getting a plasma tv this month so we'll see how the internet holds up with HD video content on the tv.

is there anyway to find out if U-Verse is expanding into your area? I have used the "notify me" button on the U-Verse site, but it is pretty well useless.

Ugh I moved and can't Uverse at my new house yet. I've had three bills from TW so far and all 3 have had extra charges on them (surprise surprise). That along with a missed original install appointment and a botched make-up install appointment has me really fucking pissed. Wish there was just one other decent option.

We moved on the 1st, and since AT&T said U-Verse was available at the new place I went ahead and said fuck Time Warner. Got the 24down/3up Mbps plan. Here's how its been going:

Installer showed up EXACTLY on time (they said 1-3PM window, he showed up literally right at 1) and took about 3 hours, but did a damned good job. Ran the line for the modem through the very narrow crawlspace to the back room where I wanted it, and then ran Cat5 from there to the bedrooms where we wanted TVs. I really love that the DVR boxes hook straight to the modem/router through Cat5. Haven't gotten the TVs hooked up yet so can't comment on the quality of the picture.

The internet HAULS ASS. I'm getting 22-23Mbps on most speed tests, and 2.5MB/s on torrents. Upload speed is always exactly at 3Mbps. Its about three times the speed I was getting with Time Warner on their "Road Runner Turbo" 10Mbps service AND costs less. Latency is vastly lower than it was with cable, and my roommate is raving about how much better WoW runs.

Nothing seems to be blocked or throttled that I've noticed yet, and I've already brought in about 10GB worth of torrents in over it. Dunno about websites/etc, I use 3rd party DNS anyways. So far, nothing but good things to say about the service!

I just bought a house in Cary and am planning on getting U-verse Internet only. I've already got AT&T DSL at my apartment in Raleigh. They're telling me they're going to charge me $149 as an Internet Install Fee. Has anyone gotten around this or gotten it reduced?

I have not done it, and it is a big dishonest, but sign up for both internet and U-verse phone services, wait 29 days, then drop the phone service. They should refund what you paid for the phone service for that month, and leave you with the free install.

I did that and it worked, but it's not dishonest because the U-Verse sales rep told me to do it

I just called to get my power service switched over and I knew they'd transfer me to somebody that would try to sell me service. The guy said to do the same thing - get extra services and cancel it. The down side is that I had to get Internet and TV service, rather than Internet and Phone. The option for free installation wasn't available for net and phone. With the Internet and TV service, I'll get $100 off of my first bill as a new customer, so for $8 I'll get service for a month. Then I'll cancel.

Doing it on AT&T's website also showed the $149 charge if I added phone. Going with cable was the only way....

I'm not sure if they still have this deal but when I signed up you could do the sign up for internet+tv to get the free install, plus you got $300 cash back if you kept both services for 3 months. So you could cancel at the end of the third month and get the cash back plus the free install. I ended up keeping the tv service

^Hey, so far the service has been rock-solid and fast, which is more than I can say of Time Warner. I'm only paying $45/mo for 12Mbit/1.5Mbit, seems pretty great to me! I think I'll ride this wave until it's over.

How the hell is this still not available for North Raleigh? I've been interested in this for like 2 years it seems yet it still is not available for zip code 27615 (basically Falls of the Neuse / Strickland area).

I'm getting raped by TWC for 185/month for Turbo Roadrunner, HD Tier Cable with HBO and 2 DVR's. The internet acts up all the time lately and I get lucky to get 1 MB/sec on downloads. What the hell are my options then? Anyone?

so whats everyone currently paying? here's my breakdown.

U-verse U200 - $67
HBO - $14
Showtime - $14
DVR - $0
Receiver - $7
HD Technology Fee - $10
U-Verse High Speed Internet Max (12,1.5) - $45
Taxes - ~$8

Total - $166

I have $24 in promotions (-$10 for 6 months for e-billing etc, -$14 for free HBO for 3 months) that are going to be expiring soon, so I won't be paying that $166 for a couple months.

It looks like their pricing is pretty fixed, not on some sliding scale like TWC. Has anyone been successful in calling them and asking for a temporary promotion/price reduction, TWC style?

^ I live in North Raleigh and I have it

Ive got the U200 package but if you're going with showtime and hbo wouldn't it make more sense to get the U300 package then pay for hbo?

^ definitely...thanks for the advice! it's the same price, but i'd get the movie package instead of just showtime, and i'd get 70 more channels (that i'll probably never watch)

I'm in the Falls of the Neuse/Sandy Forks area and I've had U-Verse since March.

U300 is definitely the sweetspot. I was all set to add HBO but I watch far more Showtime series and I've got too many movies to watch as it is so the extra $14 wasn't worth it (I can wait for the series DVDs). U450 is just too big of a jump.

U300 - $82
DVR - $0
Extra Receiver - $7
HD Fee - $10
Max Internet - $45
Voice 250 - $25 (I hate paying this but really need a home line with a family)
+ taxes/fees
= $182

U-verse U200 - $67
Movie Package - $20
DVR - $0
Receiver - $7
HD Technology Fee - $10
U-Verse High Speed Internet Max (12,1.5) - $45
-$10 e-billing
-$20 movie promotion

Taxes - ~$5

Total - $124

I have tried to time warner them into a price cut, to no avail, all they offer are free upgrades. I am considering cutting back to U100 with the assumption of a free upgrade to U200. Or maybe free HD for three months.

How did you get $10 off the ebilling?!?!?! I guess I could call but a swift kick in the balls is generally more desirable than having to call in to uverse CS.

My favorite is calling the Uverse number, entering my telephone number, waiting like 20 minutes then the person that answers telling me I need the uverse department.

It works as expected. the current deals can be signed up for online at http://att.com/uguide

Log-in, then click "SHOP", then click on any of the "upgrade now". Scroll down on the left to "Special Offers" and click "View more TV offers". HBO is free for three months, the movie package is free for six months, or you can add HD free for 1 month. Well, drop the HD, then add it back using the special offer. $10 off for one month, do nothing else and it will go back to the $10 monthly fee. It is not really worth the effort, but the other offers are great. I am enjoying the movie package for six months, $20 a month otherwise. But be careful not to add specials you have already used in the past, since it will add the cost without adding the rebate and not tell you (check the cart Updates* tab to make sure the rebates appear). Mark your google calendar when you need to come back and cancel upgrades if you don't want to wind up paying for them.

To simply billing, I waited until the day before the monthly billing cycle, to rule out the need for prorating.

I have been using coax to connect my DVR to the TV for the past couple of years. I installed a new TV last weekend and tried hooking it to the HDMI port on the DVR/Cable box, but it didn't find a signal. Do I have to do something to get the cable box to transmit out using the HDMI port instead of the coax port?

When you say "cable box" do you mean u-verse? I didn't have to do shit. Just unplugged the coax and plugged in the hdmi. I did have to go into settings to change it from 420i to 1080i to make the picture look not shitty.

whats the deal with that movie package/U300 upgrade, where you get a $50 credit? I don't see that listed anywhere online. Did it already expire?

and damn. i went to add a receiver, and they're saying it's a $55 'Installation Fee." that sucks.

^^ strange. I'll try again tonight. Maybe it's a bad HDMI cable or something. I went ahead and ran three HDMI cables before I put the tv on the wall, so I'll try one of the others.

Anyone else having a problem with a lot of on demand content? Most of the HD movies and SD shows end within a few seconds of starting. Had a tech out to the house yesterday and they concluded that the issue is in our entire area and not with my house. Still waiting to hear back on whether that's resolved.

Just cancelled U-Verse TV today, I'm keeping internet for a while longer though. We were paying ~$75 / month for TV we barely watched. The features are cool and the channel lineup is pretty good, but we are going to do OTA HD + NetFlix for now and save over $60 / month that way.

I'm curious. Let me know if they swap out your Gateway. Are you keeping phone+internet, or just internet? I heard they are coming out with simplified gateways that do just internet.
