i really hope there's more of the battle of five armies in part 2 than there was in the book, which i thought tolkien handled pretty poorly. i realize it was a story written for his kids, but i just hated how it's like, "bilbo got knocked out. thorin was mortally wounded. also, fili and kili died," and that's it. 12/21/2011 11:26:38 AM |

In the trailer bilbo basically says " I didn't tell you the whole truth.". The idea could be that the book is the original story Frodo was told about the adventure.
I would like to believe that this is one way of allowing a lot of expansion on the book. There are many times in the book where a lot of detail and time is brushed over. This would also allow for depth to be added. The movies could also follow gandalf when he separates from them. Now that I think about it, bilbo could have left things about his encounter with golumn out.
Would make for a much more compelling story. As in, there were things he didn't want to tell Frodo for reasons we don't know about. 12/21/2011 12:32:24 PM |

i doubt there will be much diversion from the book. i never read the silmarillion, so i don't know if it got into much detail with regards to what gandalf was doing when he left the party, but i'd rather not see peter jackson just make up some stuff like that for the hell of it. 12/21/2011 12:42:14 PM |

The hobbit only needs like 3 parts to be spot on. Golumns cave, the trolls, and what happens with smaug.
Peter can do whatever he wants with the rest. He has been neck deep in this world for 10 plus years. He won't ruin anything. 12/21/2011 1:33:46 PM |

yea they've already discussed a lot of what will and won't be in the movies and why over the past couple years during interviews and news bits and script leaks etc. There are still things that I don't know about that will be in there of course but there isn't as much room for speculation as one might think. 12/21/2011 2:03:50 PM |

I just follow The One Ring blog site. (although they post everryttthing even tangentially related to Tolkien in general so it's tough to sift through stuff that is meaningful updates). A lot of the stuff I am talking about actually dates back to when Del Toro was still involved. They talked about their original plan which was to have The Hobbit be the entire first movie with the 2nd movie pulling bits from the Silmarillion and bridging between The Hobbit and the trilogy. Then they talked about how that didn't pan out and how they split The Hobbit into two movies and they also talked at times a little bit about what kind of other stories would be woven in.
It's been quite a while since I was reading those posts so sorry for the lack of specifics. 12/21/2011 3:07:02 PM |

From what I understand, they are going to split the movie at some point after Bilbo discovers the ring, but before they reach The Lonely Mountain. My guess is it'll probably be right after they leave Mirkwood in barrels. Along the way, they are going to be weaving in Gandalf's adventures away from Bilbo and the dwarves, and possibly a bit about how him and Aragorn hunted down Gollum. 12/21/2011 4:03:51 PM |
Stimwalt All American 15292 Posts user info edit post |
-SPOILER-
Yeah, more than likely the first movie will end in Laketown, where the Lakemen open the barrels and discover the dwarves inside them. Allowing for an epic second movie with Smaug, the battle of five armies, and a heroes welcome back to the Shire with an ominous end fixated on the one ring resting on the mantle.

I agree with these assumptions. What really matters is where they decide to extend/expand/add to the story. You could make the 2nd movie entirely about the lonely mountain if you really wanted.
Its all about how do you end the first. You still need to have a great ending. 12/21/2011 4:19:45 PM |

^^^ Taking a jab at Jackson for leaving him out of LOTR?
Tom Bombadil and Goldberry were certainly fan favorites for those who actually have read the books, but I have to admit it wouldn't have done anything for the movies. I've finally convinced myself of this after being irritated for years. 12/22/2011 8:20:56 AM |

Anyone else here watch the appendices discs that came with the extended editions of the trilogy? Granted, I was already a homer for LOTR, but I gained even more respect and admiration for the sheer amount of work those people put into making those movies. You really can't make any serious gripes over what they left out or changed after seeing the painstaking attention to detail that went into every single shot. The fact that they basically got the entire writing, art, and direction team back for "The Hobbit" gives me total faith that it's going to match if not surpass what they accomplished with LOTR.

Looks like this is going to be filmed in 48fps, and I'm interested in how that will come out.
Quote : | "the-hobbit-movie-image-bilbo-food-01The Hobbit: While I was one of the people incredibly excited to see Peter Jackson make a movie in 48fps, I’ll admit the footage is such a radical change from what I expected, it’s going to polarize audiences. The first thing to know is that the actual Hobbit footage looks brilliant. The ten minutes that Jackson showed us featured Bilbo and Gollum getting ready to play a riddle game, plenty of Gandalf, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, the Dwarves and the group walking across mountaintops, plenty of action, and many other returning faces. Also, the 3D looked great and the new 48fps drastically reduces eye strain.
That’s the good news.
The bad news is the 48fps is so jarring that I’m not sure casual moviegoers will enjoy it. While I figured the image quality would improve at 48fps, it’s like looking at real life on a movie screen and not in a good way. You no longer have motion blur. You no longer can hide stuff in the darkness. While watching Bilbo fight the trolls (which looked great), it looked like nothing I’ve ever seen projected on a movie screen. Granted the visual effects weren’t done and the lighting wasn’t finalized, but it was such a change that by the end of the presentation, I wasn’t sure I wanted to watch the entire movie in this new 48fps format. This is definitely not what I expected to say.
Ultimately, it just didn’t look cinematic and it sort of looked like HD TV. Perhaps shooting at 48fps and then projecting at 24fps will solve my issues. Who knows.
But here’s the one takeaway that we mustn’t forget: this is the dawn of a new technology. In a few years, when the filmmakers and post-production supervisors learn how to master this new 48fps, I believe this new way of projecting movies might make serious inroads and possibly become the norm.
But it’s also possible audiences will rebel against this new way of projecting as they did with Smell-O-Vision in the 50's. For more of my thoughts, watch the video blog above." |

New trend in movies... split up one short story into as many movies as possible.
Yeah, I guess they are pulling in a lot of material from the Silmarillion but 3 movies for such a simple, short book... two was overkill. 7/30/2012 1:39:23 PM |

I'm not really sure how PJ is going to pull this off without losing the chronological order of the original story. Perhaps the third movie will begin with the ending of the hobbit and trail off onto other stories from the Middle Earth history??? 7/30/2012 1:47:46 PM |
CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
I do not think that two movies was overkill but I feel that 3 is. I think 2 2ish hour movies would have been perfect for this story but I am a little worried now that what made The Hobbit such a great, simple story will be lost within 3 movies. 7/30/2012 2:11:46 PM |
