After hearing the horrors of Chem I + II, I'm glad my AP test took care of them. Even when other people asked me for help (CHE major), I had no clue how to do most of the stuff.

On one hand, you don't have to take the horrors of chem class.

On the other hand, people are learning more than you.

lol chem 101 and 201 being a horror... man, they both were better than my AP chem class. Plus my lab partner was a pretty hot chick and the lab was in that new building on main campus back in 04. Clean lab, all new equipment, fun...

I don't get why so many people hate Chem201/Dr. Warren when everyone here has a 4.0gpa and got a 1600SAT?

One day I wore a shirt to CH201 that had the Silver Surfer on it. Dr Warren said it was an awesome shirt and the Silver Surfer was his favorite comic book character. We spoke of comics briefly for a few mins before the class started. This was late in the semester where only like 30 people still showed up to his class each time (out of like 100 or however many people could fit in that giant room in Dabney) so I was glad that he was able to put a face to my name.

Dr. Warren is a good dude. It's nice to have professors that actually care about their students and teaching. After a few crappy professors you really appreciate guys like him

When I took his class he would routinely put up incorrect examples in class (used a marker and an overhead projector as well...) and the book was full of errors (including an incorrect sign in the highlighted definition of Gibb's free energy constant). His material was actually pretty simple if taught correctly however given his inability to convey information and the texts terrible shortcomings it was an exercise in futility.

^i politely disagree
i had 201 with him and it was the class i worked the hardest in (in undergrad at least ).
i mean i busted ass in the class and i still made a B

but i'm happy i did, it helped me out HUGELY in other classes when i was too lazy to do work. (DOH)

i like dr warren.
he's a-ok in my book.

a lot more entertaining and interesting than a lot of people on here (not restricted to professors).

and also

What edition of the Wertz book was he using? I would have been fine if I had one resource that I could trust as being correct. Going back and forth between two incorrect sources (lecture notes and book) got old quick.

i don't remember.
it was a while back.

i do remember looking at several supplementals though.
there could have been errors, but i didnt use the textbook as my sole source
(and actually now that i think about it i believe there was one mistake that i was able to figure out)

I have always been a strong advocate of having classes videotaped and made available online to students. I suffer from attention disorder and am not a good note taker as it is. To be able to go back and review my classes over again in the evening I 100% believe my GPA would have been higher by 1/2 point. It makes perfect sense and I may be in talks w/the University about making this happen

^they do that here at campbell (at least for the graduate courses) and i freaking LOVE it. LOVE IT.

i honestly think most of our generation has pretty severe attention span problems.

I've found a couple mistakes in the Wertz book but none have been anything significant like conceptual wrong or blatantly false. I am aware of the Gibbs energy flip someone mentioned earlier and it is an easy fix. But to make a claim that a professor is not worthy because of a couple minor errors in the text he uses and some flubs on the chalkboard that anybody can make is a bit extreme. Keep in mind Professors are not geniuses or expected to be perfect. They are here to pass on their knowledge to you.

joie i was talking to an NC State professor the other day and he was against having any of his classes videotaped. He tried to say that if the classes were all videotaped he would be out of a job. I lol'd at his thinking. If you really want to educate your students you should make an effort to provide as many tools to them as is reasonable, and in this generation, videotaping a class for online use is about as easy as writing a thank you card in the 1950's

If you take the time to create and review your lectures in advance (maybe using "modern" technology like power point) you will minimize these errors. If you are creating them on the fly (using an overhead projector and markers) you are doing a disservice to your students. There is also no real excuse for a book to be that full of errors considering that this wasn't anywhere near the first edition of that book.

^^^HA. really?

wow. it really helps me a bunch!
soemtimes ill just rewatch a lecture and won't take notes just to let the material sink in.
it's wonderful.

the only problem you have with it though is a lot of people will not some to class...hell ive skipped a day or two cause i hate this commute

and also we have a professor that lectures at a different time, posts the videos, and then uses the class time (thats being videotaped as well) as a question/answer session.
and in each of his classes he requires attendance.
it annoys me a bit because its only a 2 credit course but we're actually "in class" for about 5-6ish hours.

you would not believe how many powerpoints i see that are full of errors

and also i feel like a lot of professors rely on powerpoint way too much.
i too can read off slides and call it a class. (not all professors do this though, but i will admit when used properly-powerpoint is a nice tool)

True enough that is why I specified review.
^^ Ha. I will say that out of all the chemistries I took (101, 221, 223, and 201) I learned the least in 201. There is a reason why Warren is still a Teaching Assistant Proffesor...

maybe he enjoys teaching, and not doing research for grant money, and that is why he is an assistant professor. (never heard that term before, but I do know adjunct professor though.)

Nice try Adder: having been promoted from lecturer -> senior lecturer -> TAP. This is the Chem department's natural progression for non tenure-track faculty (NTT). When I was first hired, all NTT faculty were 'lecturers' irregardless of time here.

I'm taking 201 now because i didn't need it in my first go-round, and having him for 101 got me through the first test. Now, however, as soon as we get out of the easy thermodynamics stuff I have a feeling I will do pretty terrible. There is a lot of stuff I can't remember.

It wasn't really a nice try at all. It was my assumption (not being "in the know") that an assistant professor wasn't a very desirable title. Sounds like I hit a nerve though doesn't it?
So what were the details? Did you send me an email with my username from TWW or was it via PM that you suggested that certain things shouldn't be discussed on an internet forum?
