The Pains of Being Pure at Heart AND Surfer Blood @ the Cradle 6/15!

$12!

Rock music!

Probably the best double-header of the year (in a year where there's already been a lot of awesome ones).

I've heard that whoever told you that sucks.

They were great live both times I saw them (both @ 506). There were some sound issues at one of the shows (can't remember which), but that seemed to be the fault of the sound guy and they got them ironed out quickly.

White Rabbits killed it at 506 last night. Was a little unsure how their latest record would translate live, but it was great.

Will definitely see them again.

Back to CH for Temper Trap tonight

The Kissaway Trail sucked ass. The Temper Trap was a lot better than I expected.

What was with the dude with long hair and the tambourines that refused to sing into the mic?

Yeah i didn't get there until Kissaway Trail was done. Gave them a listen beforehand and wasn't too worried about catching their set. Pretty cool guys though, talked to a few of them at set break

Temper Trap was pretty solid, but they played for less than an hour. Can't expect much different with only one album under their belt I guess though.

The bassist and bald flex musician in the back were providing most of the vocal support. Maybe he just didn't want to feel left out

Mastodon is on the front page of the N&O weekend section today for their show tomorrow. AIC is also in there.

lonnie walker and future virgins have been added to the love language/harlem show tomorrow night, making it perhaps the best bill of the weekend for anyone who's not into metal

but titus andronicus, perhaps my favorite live band in the world right now, are playing at the 506 on sunday with spider bags (from durham), who happen to be the favorite band in the world of TA frontman patrick stickles

so there's that

" This song is not by Titus Andronicus, but actually by a band from North Carolina called Spider Bags, who are the greatest band in the world. This song was on an album called A Celebration of Hunger, which was the best album of 2007 by a wide margin. That album has been unequaled by any album which came since, with the exception of the early mixes we have heard of the new Spider Bags album, Midnight Moving Skies, which is also profoundly amazing. It is staggering to me that Spider Bags are not exponentially more popular, since they are the greatest band in the world and everyone who hears them falls in love with them. We have played with this band quite a few times, and sometimes we have to play after them, at which point we in Titus Andronicus feel very embarrassed. Also, whenever we are in North Carolina, Dan McGee, who is the singer of Spider Bags, lets us stay at his house. Very gracious. Spider Bags are number one."

From Titus Andronicus' Daytrotter. Session, here.

Definitely going to this tomorrow night.

that's a great bill, but I'll take the Max Indian and Ryan Gustafson show at Slim's for only $5 and avoid the long ass drive to chapel hell, thank you.

ETA --- and Vulcan needs to take that link to the amphitheater thread just to show the dumbass original poster another horrendous act he must attempt to take up for and claim it's a good show.

godalmighty, they're going to ruin that venue before it even opens.

^^^^ That cover is off the fucking charts.

I think they closed with it the first time I saw them but I could be wrong. Either way, I wasn't familiar with Spider Bags at the time, either (funny how Raleigh and Durham seem so far apart sometimes), and was disappointed to find that the TA version blows the original out of the water. Spider Bags are still awesome, though, it's just that Stickles gives a better reading of that particular song.

I went to that Lonnie Walker/Harlem/Love Language show. All three bands sounded good, but not great. Harlem kind of seemed like dicks, but their set was good, so who cares. They introduced themselves, "We're Spoon and we're from Harlem, TX," which made me laugh. The Love Language were drunk as shit.

Can't wait for the Titus Andronicus show tonight. This'll be my first time seeing TA live even though I've wanted to 2 other times. I've actually never heard the Spider Bags before, but I'll be sure to make it to the show in time to see them. That cover by TA sounded great.

^i've never been able to get past the lead singer for TA's voice. it's just grating - kinda like conor oberst in desaperacidos. i do like the song "a pot in which to piss" from the new album though - really great arrangement.

^I feel the same way about his voice that I do about Craig Finn's (from The Hold Steady)...at first, it's definitely a little annoying, but when you get used to it in the context of what the band does, it's the only thing that could fit the band. But, I definitely see your point.

Also, the new album is chock full of fantastic rock arrangements. Perfect rock album for the 21st century, IMO. Epic, grand, smart, energetic, etc.

I've always found the TA recordings to be a little muddy, particularly the first album, and I think that makes the vocals stand out more than they really should. When they play live it's this giant raging swirl, kind of like a bar band gone apeshit, and the on-the-brink vocals fit a lot better in that context.

I haven't seen them live, but that's exactly what they sound like to me on record: a bar band gone apeshit.

Another interesting thing: I've seen them three times and the lineup has been different each time, but the shows were all just as good. Based on the videos he makes and the fact that pretty much everyone who's ever been in TA contributed some parts to The Monitor, it seems like Patrick Stickles is a nice guy, so I feel like each incarnation of TA is whoever he can get to take a couple months off from their real lives to go on a rock tour.

The last time I saw them they were a four piece with whoever was closest to the keyboards running over to bang out a few parts; now it seems they're back to a five piece with a utility keyboard/guitar guy in the corner and a girl on second guitar.

I think I'm too excited for this shit.

Notes from the Titus Andronicus set, in order from least to most surprising:

1. They fucking ruled.
2. They played tons of epic jams from The Monitor.
3. They played a large handful of songs from The Airing of Grievances.
4. AWESOME COVER OF "REBEL GIRL"!?!

Going to post this in Classifieds as well ...

Have 2 PIT tickets to MMJ in Cary this Friday. I have to work, and didn't know this would be the case until this week or so.

It is my absolute favorite band to see. Them at MSG for New Year's in 2008/09 was a top 5 all-time show for me.
I think face is $45 after fees. Let me know if you're interested and we can haggle.

PM or email (matthewdalston@gmail.com) ftw.
