Nice -- Isis is coming out with a new one. Are they gonna continue with the esoteric themes this go-round?

that works pretty well. dan deacon has that childlike wonder quality to his music, so it's fitting.

hadn't seen anyone talk about this, but apparently Ryan Gosling has a lil project called Dead Man's Bones. i thought it was gonna be crap, but the one track online is kinda cool.

Nope. It was VW. It was my freshman year of college and that song got me into them plus I bought a jetta that year. I can still visualize it. Then they had another where some guy was bowling and I liked that one too.

Kevin Barnes, re: music being used in commercials (his specifically)....

Quote :
"The pseudo-nihilistic punk rockers of the 70's created an impossible code in which no one can actually live by. It's such garbage. The idea that anyone who attempts to do anything commercial is a sell out is completely out of touch with reality. The punk rock manifesto is one of anarchy and intolerance. The punk rockers polluted our minds. They offered a solution that had no future. Of course, if the world would have ended before Sandinista! was released then everything would have been alright. It didn't. Now we have all of these half-conceived ideas and idiot philosophies floating around to confuse and alienate us. I think it is important to face reality. It is important to decide whether you are going to completely rail against the system or find a way to make it work for you. You cannot do both -- and if you attempt to do both you will only become even more bitter and confused."

Quote :
"Why commercialize yourself? In the art industry, it's extremely difficult to be successful without turning yourself into a cartoon. Even Hunter S. Thompson knew this. God knows Duchamp and Warhol knew it. Some artists are turned into cartoons and others do it themselves. I prefer to do it myself. at least then I can control how my cock is photographed. Why should it be considered such an onerous thing to view the production of art as a job? To me, the luckiest people are the ones who figure out a way to earn a living doing what they love and gain fulfillment from. Like all things in this life, you have to make certain sacrifices to get what you want. At least most of us do. If you're not some trust-fund kid or lotto winner, you've got to slave it out everyday. People who wanna be artists have the hardest time of it 'cause we are held up to these impossible standards. We're expected to die penniless and insane so that the people we have moved and entertained over the years can keep us to themselves. So that they can feel a personal and untarnished connection with our art. The second we try to earn a living wage or, god forbid, promote our art in the mainstream, we are placed under the knives of the sanctimonious indie fascists. Unfortunately, there isn't some grand umbrella grant that supports indie rockers financially and enables us to exist outside of the trappings of capitalism."

so Omar Rodríguez-López has 2 albums being released this week, and another one that was only released digitally at the very end of last year ("Old Money") is getting released on CD this week. "Old Money" was awesome, but I got it too late to include it on any lists (will prolly be my holdover to this year), but I never know what to expect album to album from his solo stuff. Some of it I have been bored with and some of it has just floored me.

My listening list for the day includes the new M. Ward, "Hold Time"

and

Peter Gabriel's "Security" just because I feel like it.

Maybe if I have time I'll listen to the new Black Moth Super Rainbow. I'm excited about it. Dandelion Gum was fucking rad.

^ LOL, hilarious.

I always find Animal Collective to be "hit or miss" with me in terms of their music, but they were a lot of fun to interview. Very down to earth, intelligent, and don't mince words.

To clarify, just because I say they're hit or miss with me personally does not mean I don't recognize they're better than 95% of the other shit out there.

This also reminds me, I should probably listen to the new record this week and see what I think about this one after enjoying Strawberry Jam so much.

the one thing i cant get over with animal collective despite enjoying the catchy-ness of a lot of their songs on record is that I dont think I have EVER seen a live video of any of the songs I really like from them that I even remotely liked compared to the album version / that made me want to see them live. and that certainly holds true on this album too with "my girls" being my favorite track on the record and any live video/version I have seen of it basically sucks.

That certainly doesn't mean that I dont like a lot of it on record still, just a bit of a turn off in some regards. Maybe I am in the minority, I dono :/

Yea I mean I definitely know people who have said they are awesome too, I guess its just not my style for a live act (based on all the videos I have seen of course since thats all i have to go on).. remove the studio production and their sound just kind of falls flat and thin to me.

i really don't think any of the youtube videos of them live do them justice... most of their shows are very bass-heavy which doesn't translate well on shitty youtube videos.. "my girls" definitely isn't as powerful live (they added the handclaps in the chorus in the studio, and have never played it that way live..) this is a pretty good recent recording http://www.nyctaper.com/?p=513

either way, i thought the show at the cradle last year was pretty good

i asked qntmfred to bump either of the AC threads instead of starting a new one, as ill admit i only check this thread every day for news about them

im MORE excited about their next release than I was for MPP, i've only been listening since right before Feels but I still feel it is not as good as that or SJ, hell I'd rank it behind the EPs too (Peacebone, People, Water Curses).

but anyways, check out one of their most recent live shows, for one song the sample is jerry garcia.

the entire show is on archive.org and its top quality, by the infamous nyc taper

ALSO, i just wanted to add that seeing AC live was incredible, especially with the set they have currently with the 5 or 6 colored strobes going off at different points. That set + Daily Routine = incredible. I don't know if theres a great video of that but one of my other favorites is the Malta Festival which there is video of
