Does everyone feel that their current career field matches the ones that are recommended for their personality type?

eleusis and I are both in the fields linked to our personalities:

Quote :
"The Mastermind (INTJ) is very focused as well, but more on an internal vision. They are good at solving problems and like to work on tough intellectual puzzles. They are often led into technical positions such as scientific researcher, design engineer, environmental planner. The developing field of genetics benefits from their intensity as does the field of medicine. In education they are most often found at the college and university level. In the professions, they may be a lawyer, a business analyst, or strategic planner. Some have a strong artistic/creative bent and may become an artist, inventor, or designer. Whatever they do, they do it with intensity. Says Kim, "I am constantly teaching myself something new in order to solve the problems that I encounter. My husband leaves me alone when he sees that I am caught in what he calls my "Thinking Time." I'm unwinding knots even in my sleep."

Usually the most out-going of all the Rationals is the Inventor (ENTP). That's because they love bouncing their ideas off other people and seeing their reactions. It is not unusual to find this type in any job that requires new ideas and people contact. You might find them in politics, in real estate development, in advertising, in marketing, or in public relations. They could be a venture capitalist, a management consult, or a sports agent. As long as they have the opportunity to invent a new product or a new experience, they will shine. Says Donna, "We'd never tried landing on Mars using air bags and bouncing, but we did it. We took the risk, then checked out everything we could to limit the risk and we succeeded.""

Though I wonder if our careers somehow mold how pronounced we are in certain areas? Could a mildly expressed trait become more pronounced based on work?

Also, upbringing is huge for some of these traits. Our family is VERY unemotional. Super rational. Hence, my brother and I are both rationals with strongly expressed Ts.

I have scored as the following three personality types on different forms of personality tests: INTJ, ENTJ, ENTP. On the official written test, I scored as hybrids in every category, with a slight edge towards ENTJ. Some people are strong in some categories and hybrids in others. I have scored Intuitive and Thinking on all of the tests that I've taken thus far, so those are the categories that I'm fairly confident are true to form. E/I and J/P change depending on the number, the wording, and the frequency of the questions asked. So basically, it's a fairly subjective reading, for what it's worth.

Quote :
"ENTJ (Extraversion, iNtuition, Thinking, Judgment) is an abbreviation used in the publications of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to refer to one of sixteen personality types.[1] The MBTI assessment was developed from the work of prominent psychiatrist Carl G. Jung in his book Psychological Types, which proposed a psychological typology based on his theories of cognitive functions.

From Jung's work, others developed psychological typologies. Jungian personality assessments include the MBTI assessment, developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Cook Briggs, and the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, developed by David Keirsey. Keirsey referred to ENTJs as Fieldmarshals, one of the four types belonging to the temperament he called the Rationals.

ENTJs are among the rarest of types, accounting for about 2–5% of those who are formally tested.[2][3] They tend to be self-driven, motivating, energetic, assertive, and competitive. They are often sought out as leaders due to an innate ability to direct or influence groups of people. Unusually influential and organized, they may sometimes judge others by their own tough standards, failing to take personal needs into account.

Fieldmarshals are abstract, pragmatic, directive, and expressive. They tend to be highly skilled in situational organizing, directing their own actions and those of others. Their talent for contingency planning is a close second to their ability to coordinate, decide, and execute a strategy. Born engineers, they want to break an idea or concept into its most fundamental parts, subject those parts to intense scrutiny, and reassemble the idea before giving it their final approval. Their desire to ensure that an assessment is valid extends to their own work, and they will often seek the opinion of another trusted individual such as an Architect or an Inventor to refine their view of an issue, regardless of how sure they are.

Fieldmarshals have a strong desire to give structure and direction to groups of people. Of all the role variants, Fieldmarshals are the most likely to see where an organization is headed, and they want to communicate that vision to others. Thus they are more directive in their social exchanges than they are informative. Fieldmarshals often rise to positions of responsibility in work because they tend to be devoted to their jobs and are excellent administrators. Fieldmarshals may not actively seek out leadership responsibilities, but will often volunteer themselves to take charge in situations where leadership is absent or has failed, or where a power vacuum suddenly exists—not because they are particularly interested in power as such, but due to their innate desire to see a given system (be it social, political, workplace, or otherwise) continue to function until a suitable leader can be identified, who, in the mind of the Fieldmarshal, is as good at leadership as at background administration.

Fieldmarshals search more for goals and policy than they do for procedures and regulations. They strive to make their organization more efficient by reducing red tape, task redundancy, and confusion in the workplace. Fieldmarshals take a straightforward and tough-minded attitude toward tasks, approaching them with impartial analysis, and basing their decisions on well thought-out plans, impersonal data, and overall probability of success. They expect others to follow their vision, and they are willing to remove stumbling blocks that prevent a given system (human or otherwise) from being fully productive. For Fieldmarshals, there must be a goal-directed reason for executing any plan. People’s emotions are generally considered secondary to raw data in any decision-making process.

Fieldmarshals are impatient with ineffectiveness, inefficiency, and the repetition of error. If an established procedure can be demonstrated to be ineffective at accomplishing a certain goal, they will abandon the procedure. Fieldmarshals keep long-term and short-term objectives in mind while striving to turn their organizations into smooth-functioning, empirically stable systems.[4]"

Fairly accurate for the most part, but a lot of these descriptions are awfully generous. There are more negatives that are not being mentioned in the synopsis. Although, yes I am an Engineer and my grandmother used to call me the little Engineer when I was little, and I have taken on leadership roles because of unaddressed inefficiencies, so it's pretty representative overall. However, I'm pretty sure I'm nothing like Napoleon, lol.

"ISFJs are characterized above all by their desire to serve others, their "need to be needed." In extreme cases, this need is so strong that standard give-and-take relationships are deeply unsatisfying to them; however, most ISFJs find more than enough with which to occupy themselves within the framework of a normal life. (Since ISFJs, like all SJs, are very much bound by the prevailing social conventions, their form of "service" is likely to exclude any elements of moral or political controversy; they specialize in the local, the personal, and the practical.)

ISFJs are often unappreciated, at work, home, and play. Ironically, because they prove over and over that they can be relied on for their loyalty and unstinting, high-quality work, those around them often take them for granted--even take advantage of them. Admittedly, the problem is sometimes aggravated by the ISFJs themselves; for instance, they are notoriously bad at delegating ("If you want it done right, do it yourself"). And although they're hurt by being treated like doormats, they are often unwilling to toot their own horns about their accomplishments because they feel that although they deserve more credit than they're getting, it's somehow wrong to want any sort of reward for doing work (which is supposed to be a virtue in itself). (And as low-profile Is, their actions don't call attention to themselves as with charismatic Es.) Because of all of this, ISFJs are often overworked, and as a result may suffer from psychosomatic illnesses.

In the workplace, ISFJs are methodical and accurate workers, often with very good memories and unexpected analytic abilities; they are also good with people in small-group or one-on-one situations because of their patient and genuinely sympathetic approach to dealing with others. ISFJs make pleasant and reliable co-workers and exemplary employees, but tend to be harried and uncomfortable in supervisory roles. They are capable of forming strong loyalties, but these are personal rather than institutional loyalties; if someone they've bonded with in this way leaves the company, the ISFJ will leave with them, if given the option. Traditional careers for an ISFJ include: teaching, social work, most religious work, nursing, medicine (general practice only), clerical and and secretarial work of any kind, and some kinds of administrative careers.

While their work ethic is high on the ISFJ priority list, their families are the centers of their lives. ISFJs are extremely warm and demonstrative within the family circle--and often possessive of their loved ones, as well. When these include Es who want to socialize with the rest of the world, or self-contained ITs, the ISFJ must learn to adjust to these behaviors and not interpret them as rejection. Being SJs, they place a strong emphasis on conventional behavior (although, unlike STJs, they are usually as concerned with being "nice" as with strict propriety); if any of their nearest and dearest depart from the straight-and-narrow, it causes the ISFJ major embarrassment: the closer the relationship and the more public the act, the more intense the embarrassment (a fact which many of their teenage children take gleeful advantage of). Over time, however, ISFJs usually mellow, and learn to regard the culprits as harmless eccentrics :-). Needless to say, ISFJs take infinite trouble over meals, gifts, celebrations, etc., for their loved ones--although strong Js may tend to focus more on what the recipient should want rather than what they do want.

Like most Is, ISFJs have a few, close friends. They are extremely loyal to these, and are ready to provide emotional and practical support at a moment's notice. (However, like most Fs they hate confrontation; if you get into a fight, don't expect them to jump in after you. You can count on them, however, run and get the nearest authority figure.) Unlike with EPs, the older the friendship is, the more an ISFJ will value it. One ISFJ trait that is easily misunderstood by those who haven't known them long is that they are often unable to either hide or articulate any distress they may be feeling. For instance, an ISFJ child may be reproved for "sulking," the actual cause of which is a combination of physical illness plus misguided "good manners." An adult ISFJ may drive a (later ashamed) friend or SO into a fit of temper over the ISFJ's unexplained moodiness, only afterwards to explain about a death in the family they "didn't want to burden anyone with." Those close to ISFJs should learn to watch for the warning signs in these situations and take the initiative themselves to uncover the problem. "

I'm INFJ and most of mine is super accurate too. And yes, I am in line with the careers too.

Quote :
"Counselors have an exceptionally strong desire to contribute to the welfare of others, and find great personal fulfillment interacting with people, nurturing their personal development, guiding them to realize their human potential. Although they are happy working at jobs (such as writing) that require solitude and close attention, Counselors do quite well with individuals or groups of people, provided that the personal interactions are not superficial, and that they find some quiet, private time every now and then to recharge their batteries. Counselors are both kind and positive in their handling of others; they are great listeners and seem naturally interested in helping people with their personal problems. Not usually visible leaders, Counselors prefer to work intensely with those close to them, especially on a one-to-one basis, quietly exerting their influence behind the scenes.

Counselors are scarce, little more than one percent of the population, and can be hard to get to know, since they tend not to share their innermost thoughts or their powerful emotional reactions except with their loved ones. They are highly private people, with an unusually rich, complicated inner life. Friends or colleagues who have known them for years may find sides emerging which come as a surprise. Not that Counselors are flighty or scattered; they value their integrity a great deal, but they have mysterious, intricately woven personalities which sometimes puzzle even them.

Counselors tend to work effectively in organizations. They value staff harmony and make every effort to help an organization run smoothly and pleasantly. They understand and use human systems creatively, and are good at consulting and cooperating with others. As employees or employers, Counselors are concerned with people's feelings and are able to act as a barometer of the feelings within the organization.

Blessed with vivid imaginations, Counselors are often seen as the most poetical of all the types, and in fact they use a lot of poetic imagery in their everyday language. Their great talent for language-both written and spoken-is usually directed toward communicating with people in a personalized way. Counselors are highly intuitive and can recognize another's emotions or intentions - good or evil - even before that person is aware of them. Counselors themselves can seldom tell how they came to read others' feelings so keenly. This extreme sensitivity to others could very well be the basis of the Counselor's remarkable ability to experience a whole array of psychic phenomena."

Plus now I get to study up on how to bring out my psychic powers

I used to test ENTP when I first started at state, scoring very mildly extroverted and perceiving. I accredit the increased extroversion to being from a severly unpopulated area and being amazed by the amount of people around me. As I got older and progressed through school and eventually into a career, I switched from being mildly extroverted to slightly introverted (about 11% according to this test.) As I progressed through my career, I switched from being slightly biased towards perception to heavily judgmentive (about 89% according to this test.) I think this is mainly because I found that I was able to function better and reduce my stress levels by keeping a strict schedule and doing the things I want and need to do in an orderly fashion. When I was younger, I wanted to keep my options open so that I could try a lot of different things and find out what I liked in life. Now that I know what I enjoy doing, I tend to set strict schedules so that I can make the most of my time doing the things I know I like to do.

Test is inherently flawed

Doesn't account for sociopathic tendencies that would supercede other personality traits

Like for me, i tested ENTP...and I'm narcissistic and machiavellian in ways the test wouldn't catch with those questions

My career changed mine as well. I went from mildly introverted to heavily extroverted (89%, according to this test). Most people on this site probably recall me being slightly shy when I was at State. Unfortunately, being an introvert just doesn't work when you're in an ad agency that focuses on hospitality. If I want to move up in my company, then I have to be outgoing, just like most people who work in hospitality. I joined Toastmasters to make myself more comfortable in social settings. With time, I just grew to love socializing and human interaction. It helps make me better at my job and better understand my clients.

Arab you scored as an E? That's interesting, I figured you would score as a strong I -> and get a result of INTJ.

I think of EMCE, Grumpy, and Hooksaw as strong E's. Haven't really engaged the other people on the ENTJ list.

^^thats another point.

it actually makes the test more accurate.

if the test asks you the same question three-four times and you waver a bit on each time, it means you aren't sure of your answer.
average the them for a semi better result.

INTJ, career options: Natural Sciences, Information Specialist, Computer programming, lawyer, or librarian. Shit, I picked the wrong field. "Masterminds tend to be much more definite and self-confident than other Rationals, having usually developed a very strong will. Decisions come easily to them; in fact, they can hardly rest until they have things settled and decided. But before they decide anything, they must do the research. Masterminds are highly theoretical, but they insist on looking at all available data before they embrace an idea, and they are suspicious of any statement that is based on shoddy research, or that is not checked against reality."

Move me to the ENTP column.

I'd always been right on the borderline between ENTP/ESTP; it would vary either way when I'd take a Myers-Briggs test. I always identified as ESTP because I felt like the overall profiles/descriptions were more like me.

I took the test again and scored mildly but clearly (38%) as an ENTP. I took another one and was identified as an ENTP on that one, too. After reading the profiles/descriptions a little more, I would say that's probably accurate--an ENTP with some ESTP tendencies.

I'm always an ENTJ (aka Fieldmarshal), year after year. I seem to be getting even more so as time passes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fieldmarshal_(Role_Variant)

Quote :
"Fieldmarshals have a strong desire to give structure and direction to groups of people. Of all the role variants, Fieldmarshals are the most likely to see where an organization is headed, and they want to communicate that vision to others. "

Quote :
"Fieldmarshals search more for goals and policy than they do for procedures and regulations. People’s emotions are generally considered secondary to raw data in any decision-making process."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ENTJ

Quote :
"They generally take a big-picture view and build a long-term strategy. They typically know what they want and may mobilize others to help them attain their goals. ENTJs are often sought out as leaders due to an innate ability to direct groups of people."

Maybe that explains why I'm attracted to the political arena and field organizing. Mobilizing people around the goal of affecting future policy does seems right up the alley of an field marshal.
