He needs better screens. They show him running around a lot, but it's all wasted effort because the screens don't actually affect his defender.
He also done need to develop a pullup jumper after the pump fake and 2 dribbles. 2/18/2012 3:28:36 PM |

he did it as recently as our victory over Maryland last month as well as earlier this season against Campbell and St. Bonaventure
He did it 4 times last year, against Georgia Tech, Wake, BC and ECU
He also did it 2 years ago against Maryland, which was after the FSU game

I would be all for Johnson getting the start in the next game - he seems to have hit a groove with his shooting now and the offense is much more active when he's in the game. Wood doesn't serve much purpose if his shots aren't falling, and honestly most of them haven't even been close lately.
And at the very least Johnson will drive the lane to create something, even if he gets a little out-of-control from time to time

Wood is useless against talented teams. If he's just going to stand around and not find a way to contribute when he can't get an open 3, leave him on the bench. 2/22/2012 9:06:43 AM |

I like how he weaved through screens and the defender said fuck these screens ran a straight line to where scott would end up and thus not letting him get a shot off. Scott was working harder than the defender.
He needs to work on his conditioning and basically make his defender run the whole time we are on offense.
FG% for the whole team took a dump. never seen so many missed layups. 2/22/2012 9:07:10 AM |

We need one or more of the following to help Scott Wood: above average post player, another marksmen, someone who can drive to the basket and draw defenders.
We kind of have the latter in Brown...but he doesn't do it enough for the defense to constantly collapse on him (or succeed often enough for defenses to give a shit). And I don't think we have a marksmen or dominant big man coming in next year's class (even if Amile joins, he's not a big time post player).
So hopefully Purvis can be that guy that takes the defenses focus off of Scott Wood. Because he's never going to blow up against athletic teams with good coaches who can game plan against him (especially when they've been doing it for three years now).
I still think he's a starter, he just needs a little help. 2/22/2012 9:14:08 AM |
skokiaan All American 26447 Posts user info edit post |
^yep. We rarely cause the defense to collapse, so Wood just has to outrun his guy, which is never going to happen. Plenty of teams have slow white guys who can't handle the ball, but they get production based off of the defense collapsing.
We can also set more and different screens for him. Fact of the matter is the one baseline screen he is getting has been scouted. That's not cutting it. It's also really bad screen.
If you have the best shooter in the ACC on your roster, and you aren't constantly thinking of new ways to get him open, then you are not doing your job.
Find out what your guys are good at, and tailor your offense to that. Don't tailor it to getting Howell post ups or Painter 18-footers. That's just dumb.

^ Eh...I don't think more screens are the answer. I mean...I guess we could somehow switch it up a bit...but a screen is a screen. If you're a good defender, you can get around them/through them, or find out where your guy is going to be and beat/meet him there.
And we set multiple screens for him all the time...but again, they are defended well. And even if his defender doesn't get there, the defense is usually told to to make sure he's not open, so someone else's man will pop out on him.
If we could make it to the tourney, I bet he would light up a team on the 2nd day of games. But he's been in this league for 3 years and teams know how to play him. 2/22/2012 9:41:06 AM |

Scott Wood really frustrates me. Yes he is a great shooter but he becomes a liability when he gets frustrated. He commits really stupid fouls and has no other dimensions to his game other than taking a contested three point shot. He is as 1 dimensional as it gets.

Wood needs to create his own shots...he needs to try and shoot off the dribble some and drive to the basket IMO...he's not the strongest guy in the world obviously, but an occasional drive would open things up for him some and get him in the line a la JJ Reddick 2/22/2012 9:46:23 AM |

And the thing that makes it worse is he's just about the only starter that does not reliably get in foul trouble, so he plays the full game.

I said this last year after we lost to Indiana and some chick took umbridge with it. Wood, being from Indy, the two main schools in the state are IU and Purdue. Wood as he is currently would not start for either team. IU is on the rebuild and are a borderline Top 25 team, and Purdue this year are in the middle of the Big 10. It's not like either have spectacular lineups.
Actually come to think of it, Wood reminds me of the guy we had a few years ago that had red hair, we called him Weasley, and transferred from Pitt. He played limited minutes and his purpose coming in was to drain the three. Except in his case, Wood plays the whole game. How bad is our bench during practice that they can't do better than this guy?
