I run a 3 GHZ P4 computer at home...it will normally give 250-500PPD depending on what workunit it gets. I think the old console clients are helpful. for one you can install them and never have to mess with them again, making them perfect for computers you'll never touch again.

and i don't worrk about the power usage all that much, especially on the one older computer I run...but it is just one i guess i probably wouldn't put together a bunch of older computers to run console clients on them...the PPD wouldn't warrant all the time to put together or expense of power usage/misc parts (when looking at the big picture). Better to sell off the old stuff and put together a cheap Core2Duo system to user as a media/web/backup etc server and run the SMP client on it. but if i had another box laying around that could produce 200PPD+ I'd probably plug it in

Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Idle Time!

What Is It?
Essentially Folding@Home uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor.

The North Carolina State University Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the Top 100 teams in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the support of anyone who would like to help.

All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home on it with great results.

How can I Help?
Download and install the software appropriate for your OS (Windows/Linux/Mac). For dual/quad core computers, be sure you install the SMP client. It will get you and the NCSU team far more points than the traditional client. Whichever client you choose, we recommend running the Folding@Home client as a service. The client will run in the background without notification, and will release CPU resources as needed since it runs at the lowest priority. The NCSU Team Number is 59.

Visit the team homepage for detailed installation instructions

Windows Computers
We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions.

Mac and Linux Computers
There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the regular console clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.

Playstation 3
PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!

The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! Install as many clients as you can and watch your username/team progress at the stats page

hmm i dont know...is it using 100% of the cpu cycles? is hyperthreading disabled? did you tell it to accept large work units (i suspect this is what youre missing)?

i havent had it running in a while, but i would only get 500ppd if i got the 750point work units, not sure if those are around any more or not. i'm currently getting ~250ppd out of it.

yeah just make sure you turn it off in the bios

if you're unable to do that run two console clients, using the local switch and different machine IDs. if you need more info on that let us know

Yeah, my P4 3.2GHz gets about 135PPD. I have no idea how you get 500PPD. I have HT off, foreasm on, and accept large WUs. Some WUs it goes up to 185, but most are at 135PPD.

Yeah I just checked mine and its currently doing 150PPD. But when I turned it back on earlier this week it was definitely getting some work unit which was earning 250PPD, I can't remember how big they were. the 500PPD thing was only these certain work units, I"m pretty sure they were 750 points and I haven't seen them for a long time

i'm currently running 5 SMP clients and I've only seen that 2,144 work unit pop up once, on a CoreDuo (not C2D) machine...but granted I don't pay that close attention to what workunits my clients get. if anyone finds out a way to get those workunits more reliably let us know

While we're on the subject of workunits, do you guys enable "advanced methods" (the -advmethods flag?) If so whats your experience with it been?

Heres something I found on it:
Quote :
"From time to time, Stanford will make new experimental WUs available to the Folding@home community. Only people who have explicitly indicated that they would like to receive experimental WUs will receive them. To request experimental WUs, specify the -advmethods command line option.

Experimental WUs are a bit of a double-edged sword. Sometimes they are worth extra points (e.g. the "large WUs" were available a couple of weeks early, to people who were running with the -advmethods option). But you can also receive WUs that haven't been completely debugged, and which may hang or crash out before the WU is complete. (In any case, overall system stability should not be affected... it is only the stability of the Folding@home client that can suffer, when running with -advmethods.) "

and another:
Quote :
"When used in conjunction with the bigpackets argument (decided when configuring the client), -advmethods will allow the reciept of experimental WU's, such as QMD's, that may adversly impact the performance of your computer/s. Experiences with this argument are varied, but the generally accepted solution is to only run one (1) client per machine which accepts these highly experimental WU's. Any additional clients on a given computer should run without the -advmethods argument. Currently, QMD WU's will only run on Intel CPU's due to a licensing issue with the compiler and the Intel math library. "

started running the 2 SMP clients under Vista again (Q6600 box, with affinity changer) since the ubuntu clients didn't prove to be all that reliable either...and didn't produce any more points than vista.

are you guys running the 5.92 Windows SMP client? They say its *much* more stable than the 5.91...

currently there isn't a standalone installer, you install it on top of 5.91.

here's a couple threads about it:

for me it sucked.

i put it on my desktop (who's already unstable, i have to restart the client once a day after it submits a work unit)... and guess what? it LOOPED CoreStatus=63 (99) errors until it went to sleep.

i'll try it out next week and see how i do

so it looks like i've finally got those two SMP clients running under vista with no errors now. i turned off a lot of services and cleaned up my msconfig, but I think what was causing the IO ERRORs was NOD32 antivirus. somebody asked on another board if i had that installed and sure enough i did. uninstalled that and now its all good

If this is true, then it should be added to the website. We should have a troubleshooting section with at the very least links to other forum threads for details.

i'm hoping this works, because this has been an issue for SIX long months..... but i'm on XP not vista (with the problems)... so we'll see if it's indeed NOD32

^ nice to see you jump back offer 10K PPD I'm trying to get there myself...

although some of these new SMP workunits are making it pretty tough. when i'm crunching 2 of those 1760PT workunits, I average 3200-3300PPD on my Q6600. But it seems like if I get any work units other than that my production falls pretty hard. Right now I'm working on a 2144PT WU and a 1753PT WU and I'm down to 2500PPD...which is strange cause the 2144PT WUs get more PPD on an (older) CoreDuo machine than the 1760PT WUs.
I wish there was a way to just get 1760PT WUs...

keep it up!

here's a list of the work units i hate (since they average much less PPD on my Q6600)
1) 1440 point WUs
2) 1752 point WUs

Plz to give me my 1760 point WUs back Stanford I may switch the -advmethods flag to see what WUs I get with that...

my web host must have updated php or mysql that disabled a datatype or something.

the error was:
