Because the way I’m portrayed 24/7 is as a freak! I am the latte-sipping, New York Times-reading, Volvo-driving, no-gun-owning, effete, politically correct, arrogant liberal. Who wants somebody like that?
“I guess the point I’m making,” he went on, “is that there is an entire industry now, an entire apparatus, designed to perpetuate this cultural schism, and it’s powerful. People want to know that you’re fighting for them, that you get them. And I actually think I do. But you know, if people are just seeing me in sound bites, they’re not going to discover that. That’s why I say that some of that may have to happen after the election, when they get to know you.”" |

from Daniel Primack's private equity newsletter:
Quote : | "*** Did Barack Obama just propose to eliminate capital gains taxes on venture capitalists? The same Barack Obama who most VCs believe will increase their tax burdens? The answer seems to be yes, upon my first reading of a new economic stimulus plan released yesterday, called the Small Business Emergency Rescue Plan.
Here’s a snippet:
"Barack Obama believes that we need to encourage investment in small businesses to help create jobs and turn our economy around. That’s why Obama will eliminate all capital gains taxes on investments made in small and start-up businesses. Unlike John McCain, who wants to give $200 billion in new tax cuts to America’s largest and most profitable businesses, Barack Obama wants to cut taxes for the small businesses that create jobs but struggling with restricted access to credit alongside skyrocketing health care and energy costs."
That would seem to cover venture capitalists, or at least those who still engage in early-stage investing. I’ve put in a call to Obama’s campaign to see if there’s any fine print that would exclude institutional investment, but have not yet gotten a call back. At the very least, angel investors would seem to be covered.
The only caveat (today’s secret word), and it’s a big one, is that Obama favors a change in the tax treatment of carried interest — from capital gains to ordinary income. That means the new proposal would be irrelevant for most institutional VCs, since they would no longer be paying the capital gains tax that Obama now vows to eliminate. If this new plan were enacted absent the carried interest change, however, it could not only spur angel investment, but also prompt VC firms to increase their early-stage activities…
Obama’s new plan also includes an emergency lending facility for small businesses, which would be run through the SBA. You can download the full plan here, and also read some reaction from the NVCA. " |

Doesn't Obama want to place a "sales tax" on stock purchases? I mean, I saw a clip of him talking yesterday where he said this, though I don't know the details. 10/15/2008 6:13:53 PM |

so tell me, under Obama's plan, if Wal-mart hires new employees, do they get those tax credits? If so, then doesn't that equate to tax cuts for "big corporations" as well? Gotta love the spin-job by Obama and the media, though. 10/15/2008 6:22:30 PM |

yup - definitely a lot of spinning going on.
furthermore, i think Obama's been doing a lot of pandering to the base - no way in hell he will be as much of a socialist as he sounds. he's too smart, and surrounded by U of Chicago economics guys.. 10/15/2008 6:24:44 PM |

is it? As far as I can tell, his only real plan is to say he isn't George W. Bush.
And, after perusing Obama's website and then taking a shower to feel cleaner, I see that he doesn't say which companies will get that tax-credit. So, if Wal-mart goes out and hires a bunch of people, then I don't really see how it is any different than McCain's "200billion to big corporations." Who will most be able to hire new workers? The largest companies. 10/15/2008 6:35:41 PM |

^^^ I see nowhere on his website where he says "small businesses." In fact, with all of his lip-service to small-business, it is surprising that nowhere in the bullet point where he proposes the credit does he use the term "small business." Instead, he says "companies," which, frankly, includes Wal-mart and Microsoft.
And, when I hear him speak, he usually doesn't say it is for "small-businesses." He almost always says "companies." 10/15/2008 9:12:36 PM |

I'm not quite sure there is anyway to fit over half the undecided voters polled under a partisan blinders umbrella.

Let's not re-write history. Both parties are to blame for this mess. The democrats pushed through the legislation that forced banks to write bad loans, and the republicans failed to reform the legislation when they were in control.
A pres. Obama will try all sorts of socialist "solutions" to fix the economy without success...then the even worse mess will truly be his to own.10/16/2008 10:52:03 AM |
