hell most of these classes they make you take are of no benefit and id personally elect to not even study them

you can probably condense it down to 5 classes you absolutely need out of your entire college careers, there is so much overlap between classes

That's actually somewhat true. There's very little good reason to make an engineer take a bunch of humanities classes if the goal was just to get him ready for an engineering job. However, the university system still has a goal of producing something like a well rounded person and replicating the old ideal of a "liberal" education. If the idea was just to produce certifications then the entire system needs an overhaul.

but my parents are cool as balls. they pay the interest on that and my car insurance. of course i'm not a total fuck-up, so they don't mind helping me out...

The whole point seems to be to prove that you're smart. They have to know that you aren't actually going to pull out whatever angular acceleration equation you learned mid way though dynamics and will probably look that kind of thing up again if you ever need it. Come to think of it, maybe we should go back to apprenticeship, they train engineers that way in India and china and it seems to work for them.

something sparked an argument between my mom and someone else, like usual... surprisingly, this time it wasn't me...
