oh, and I got another computer which will soon be folding. intel 2.66GHz machine. only prollem is its on a machine w/out broadband... is this gonna cause a problem for reporting?

if you aren't online it will it will only post when online, there are options for it though, depending on the usage. if you use it alot then you can just make sure you are logged on when you are about to submit. if you aren't on a lot you can run more than one instance and upload when all are ready (just run in different folders with -local)... This will allow for more processing with less time needed online.

btw, that is why we are aiming for top 100 so we can use stats

What user name did you choose? If you just joined, it may take a few days to return a WU depending on the speed of your system. Also the 1st WU you return can take longer to get you in the stat system.

OK, I too have my new P4 2.66 up and folding... Have it overclocked to 3.2 and can get a frame done in about 3.5 - 4 mins. Anyhow, just wanted to give an update.

BTW: I also wanted to throw this out there... Those of you who use the computer labs... I got a 128meg USB1.1 Thumbdrive from Wal-mart for about $35 bucks back around Christmas and have the commandline client loaded on it with a shortcut pointing to it with the -local flag, and whenever I go anywhere with a machine I plug it in and let it chug...

Nice upgrade. Make sure you have the -forceSSE flag enabled for the 4.0 client. Also if it is HT, then running multiple instances can raise your overall out put by 10-15%. The draw back with HT enabled is that it can take away CPU time from other CPU intensive aps.

I really like the thumb drive idea!! Do you know for sure that it has returned a WU and got credit for it? Do you take it home to upload? The reason I ask it that I thought that when you first configure the client, it is specific for that machine. It might have something to do with the User ID in your Log File. I know you can't just copy the files from 1 machine to several others. None of the copied installs will get credit. I imagine this is a way to prevent cheating.

I opted out of the HT... My initial plan was to go P4 3.2+ HT with 800fsb. But, as it really wasn't cost effective I went the route of the 2.6 non HT P4 with 533fsb. All-in-all saved me about $300 and performance is still adequate for me...

I have had the thumbdrive send results, but as I have multiple machines reporting in anyway I can't think of an easy way to see... But I think it is reporting and that I am getting credit.. I hope so anyway! I didn't just copy the work from one to another... I let FAH run on it to go out and d/l the work files...

Have any idea how I can tell if I get credit? Oh wait.. can I look at the protein name on the work I've got on the drive and when it finishes check stanford's site and confirm it's listed?

As you say... Fold On!

You could change the user name to something unique just for 1 WU to see if it shows up.

edWolf is ghey. havin trouble w/ the 2.66GHz machine. Its not returning any WUs, and I think its cause the service isn't getting loaded. I installed the service using the administrator's account on a winXP machine, but that account doesn't get logged onto regularly, whereas other limited accounts do. any suggestions?

Did you add the "-service" flag? You need this so the client runs at the login screen as well.

Put -service in the Paramaters Box below. You probably also want to add -forceSSE, unless it is an AMD system then use -forceasm to avoid any stability issues.

Now that we made the Top 100, here are some new stats to look at:

They are not quite up to date yet since we just hit 100 this morning.

check out your FAHlog.txt it should give you a break down of what is happening. also i am not sure if you have added the flags to your shortcut but you are banging out low point2production work units. you might be able to increase production 20-30% with them. If you want you can post where you think the error is occuring in the log and we can help debug. glad to see you folding

if it is two different computers the machine id won't matter. the machine id is only relative to each machine, such as duals and quads that need them to be seperate.

the version won't matter as much as the flags do as far as performance. the flags will force optimization and also choose the more andvanced wu's...

nice aaronburro what flags are you using?

I am thinking of running some consoles on a network, wondering if i could get some advice. The way i am thinking to have it set up is to have all the FAH's installed on one computer (all with -local flags but running them across the network on other computers). If I use the -oneunit flag on a console will it terminate the console once complete or will it stand with the details of the fold? BTW EMIII is going to not only look good but will run better for me.

just using the usual -forceasm(AMD machines) -forceSSE(Intel machines) and -service

-forceSSE is for P3s, too, right?

Glad it you got it working Dave. There have been some server issues at Stanford. You can check the following page to see if any servers are down. That's probably what happened. Just be thankful that you were able to get a new WU from a different server.
http://folding.stanford.edu/serverstat.html

Quote :

Why would you do this? I'm not sure that it would work effectivly. Individual installs would be better if possible. Assuming other people are using these machines, you may not want to use the -advmethods flag since a beta WU could be problematic. Also if they are AMD, I would use -forceasm, since there could be stability issues with -forceSSE (works great on PIII's too).

I use -forceSSE on my home AMD machine with no problems since it is a Palmino core. The problems seem to be in all of the newer cores with stability, but I have no experience with it.

ailman- what is the processor in your computer? We might be able to guess what your production should be. I would update to the 4.0 client if you have a chance. There are not any real speed boosts, but there are some minor fixes.

stonerman- it looks like your thumbdrive is returning WU's. Great idea!

my first comp(personal PC) is running a PIII 800 mhz
second one is my laptop which isn't constantly folding, but is running an AMD Mobile Athlon clocked at 1.2 GHz
any ideas for optimization? i doubt i can do much with the PC because i'm usually using it but with the laptop i usually leave it folding while i'm asleep and when i'm in my dorm room

For the PC, just use the -forceSSE and possibly the -advmethods flags. For the laptop, be careful that it does not overheat. I would use the -forceasm and -advmethods flags. When you run it at night, leave the screen open to help disapate heat. You might also want to elevate it to get better airflow. If over heating becomes a problem, you can throttle back the CPU usage to maybe 80% in the advanced options and see if that helps.

i'll add those flags to both...in psych class right now
i keep the airflow around my laptop pretty free, so far it hasn't overheated thank goodness, i've already went through two duron processors in this piece of crap, but best buy keeps replacing the processor since i spent 300 bucks on a 3 year warranty
