CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY EVERYONE IS ACTING LIKE THEY'RE GETTING FUCKED OVER?

IF I'M BEING FUCKED IN THE ASS HERE, I'D LIKE TO AT LEAST KNOW WHATS GOING ON...

(does the fact that i have no clue whats going on mean i'm getting fucked over doubly, or that i'm not getting fucked over at all?)

all i use my webspace for is a blog and a photo gallery
and it does both fine for me...

^^i've had several problems and support tickets NEVER answered...

for the same amount of money i can get more services and much better support elsewhere...

i don't know every aspect of hosting and server type stuff, so for some things i need to get help (especially when i have multiple pages that are run by friends and family) for certain things and expect to get a response AT LEAST in the same week...

so i'm just blocking the charges and i guess i'll just manually transfer everything somewhere else.

I'm a little confused here...

I've set my domain to be unlocked and it went through. ENOM is the registrar of my domain but I of course have no login with them or anything. I want to register my domain through Yahoo! but it seems they can't take a domain that is already with a registrar. I need to have my domain registered through Yahoo!... how do I do that?

you should be able to do it as a "transfer" of the domain.

i let an account go that i thought i was through with, now the account is suspended and i realize i need access to a database. i've paid up the bill, it was just suspended today, and i think i'm fucked unless somebody suddenly starts responding to email pleas for help.

now they're trying to bill me for a domain that has "Do Not Renew" selected too...

i signed the paperwork today to block Progress from my account...so it sucks for them and their horrible excuse for customer service...

I'm trying to transfer my domain away from progress-systems.

In the the progress billing tool it shows my domain as not locked, but when i try to transfer my new host tells me the domain is locked. Any ideas what is going on?

Just a word of caution to anyone signing up for Tranquil, I used my yahoo address for the account and all 4 of the emails from Tranquil (billing, confirmation, etc) got put into the spam folder. Just keep an eye out for them and make sure you don't delete them on accident.

I transferred my site over to dreamhost and haven't had any problems. The first topic this month's newsletter was "Quadruple Disk, Octuple Bandwidth for all" so can't really complain too much about that. Bandwidth allowance on my plan also grows 8GB/week and that started about six weeks ago. I'm paying $9.95/month and get (as copied from their website):

Quote :
"20 GB Storage
1 TB Transfer
Unlimited Domains Hosted
Unlimited Sub-Domains Hosted
600 Mailboxes
75 Shell Users
One FREE .com/.net/.org/.info domain
CGI/FrontPage 2002 Extensions
PHP4, perl, python, C, C++
Unlimited MySQL Databases
IMAP, POP3, and Web-Based email access
Unlimited email aliases, auto-responders, announcement lists, discussion lists, media streaming, and more.. "

The php runs pretty quick, less than one second page loads on my site for most pages and less than 5s for photo galleries to load (35 thumbs per page).

http://www.dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.html

Sign up using promo codes 15OFF for $15 off any plan or 2MONTHSFREE for two months free (~$20) on the level 1 "Crazy Domain Insane" plan (listed above)

They also have "one-click installs" for a lot of software which is helpful for people like me who are just getting started in php and haven't had any training. Really its 5 or 6 clicks but its still easier than unpacking everything and setting permissions by hand. The list of stuff from the wep panel site is:
WordPress Weblog (latest) - wordpress.org
phpBB Forum (v2.0.18) - phpbb.com
Advanced Poll (v2.03) - proxy2.de (does NOT work with PHP5!)
osCommerce Store (v2.2m2) - oscommerce.com (does NOT work with PHP5!)
MediaWiki Wiki (v1.5.1) - wikipedia.sourceforge.net
Joomla (Mambo) CMS (v1.0.4) - joomla.org
Gallery Image Album (v2.0.2) - gallery.menalto.com
WebCalendar Calendar (v1.0.2)

[Edited on January 4, 2006 at 11:01 PM. Reason : one-click installs...]

It wonders me how they do it too but then again I bought a 300gb hard drive for $100 a few months ago so I guess storage is cheap

uhm

find the old "enable down?" thread

and learn why unlimited storage etc sucks

seriously

don't compare your hard drive to your host

Me too,

They attract the stupid fucking anime sharing kids that think that they can fucking share out 5 gb work of videos and not affect others on the same shared resource.

unlimited storage doesn't suck. Storage is CHEAP. It's the unlimited bandwidth that sucks.

definately agree that dbags setting up huge fileshares is a downside to using shared hosting. They'll still hit their bandwidth limits and have to start paying for extra bandwidth. Couldn't find any specific info about their total bandwidth capabilities other than this blurb on the "about us" page:
Quote :
" We're currently connected to the Internet via redundant 100Mb connections with multiple carriers to ensure continued network connectivity in case any carrier goes down. Each connection is carried across a diversified fiber network and connects to different entrances to the Internet's backbone. This allows for total network redundancy. We also keep our bandwidth ~unsaturated~. We carry enough network capacity to double our load if we need to. We've been doing this hosting thing since 1997, and in that time we've learned what it takes to provide rock-solid service and connectivity. "

oh and I never meant to imply that my $100 hard drive was fit for server use, just that prices are coming down across the board

i just don't know why he won't show his face around here...i've been billed for all kinds of stuff and sent emails, filed support tickets and haven't had one single response. luckily, progress is blocked from making additional charges, but it's messed up that it came down to this...

Wow...I wish this had all happened a little earlier. I Paypal'ed them $25 on December 10 for domain renewal/hosting, but my domain name was hijacked because I paid a day too late. So, I have no domain name and (as far as I can tell) no hosting. My support tickets have gone unanswered.

The phone number that Paypal has on file (919-414-5431) is disconnected as well.

I'll give them one more week before I file the claim with Paypal. Hopefully they will respond to our phone calls and support tickets. I have been satisfied with the uptime and haven't had any other problems prior to this.

If you want to save the maximum amount possible w/ Dreamhost ($97), you can use this code SAVINGS. I don't make anything off of you (unlike the codes above which only save you a few bucks, and the person gets to pocket the rest). If you'd like me to make $7 off of you, then use SAVEME90. That is off of yearly contracts. Dreamhost gives it's members $97/referral, but you can choose to give people up to that much off (which means my referral fee is $0).

I've been w/ Dreamhost for 2 years and never had any issues (well one issue when they lost power in their whole data center - but the issues involved have been resolved). My favorite part about DH is the snapshot backups (http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/Backups) - cd into .snapshot and choose how far back you would like to go ( hourly.0 is one hour ago, hourly.1 is two hours ago, nightly.0 is one day ago, nightly.1 is two days ago, weekly.0 it one week ago, weekly.1 is two weeks ago), copy the file you want to restore out to your disk space. No having to call support. And if you setup a cronjob to backup your databases in your disk space, then you always have sql backups. Their machines run Debian linux and all their storage is SAN based, so you dont have to worry about some disk dying and loosing your data. If your machine dies they pull up your account on on another machine and change all your DNS information automatically.

I did get a relatively speedy response to a support ticket I sent in about getting safe mode for php turned off (like 24-36hrs turnaround).
