If there are any bluegrass enthusiasts out there, lets use this thread to post upcoming local or well-known shows coming up.

Also if there are any good cd's out there.

Or if anybody would like to get together and play...im a beginning mandolin picker, and not that good right now, but I would love to get up with somebody and play

I only have one bluegrass CD, but it's by Blue Highway and I think they're pretty good.

They're going to be playing at Red, White and Bluegrass in Morganton this weekend. You should be able to google the event - I think it's two days long. They're about 5 bands coming?

if you like bluegrass, but live in Raleigh/eastern part of the state, then stream WNCW.

http://www.wncw.org

the festival link was tougher to find than I thought. Here it is (although that show in Cary looks a helluva lot better....)

Rickey Skaggs, Del McCoury, Old Crow Medicine Show and others will be playing this saturday at Cary Recency Amplitheater for only $17, after service charges it's like $30 though, still definitley worth it.

I used to DJ a metal show on KNC before the Bluegrass show would come on. The Bluegrass dude was awesome and I liked the music. We made it a point to play the most vile, heavy metal song there was and then go straight into a bluegrass tune. It was the ultimate train wreck.

other than clean picking and blazing fast fingers, does anyone know the trick to learning bluegrass style guitar?

ie. blues/rock has minor pentatonic, country has major pentatonic, blue grass has _______? i've tried various scales/modes, nothing really has that bluegrass sound.

Yea, Steve is my teacher but

I'm taking mandolin lessons....he teaches bluegrass guitar, blues guitar, mandolin, dobro and the banjo.

He's pretty talented. Ive tinkered with the idea of taking a few banjo lessons, but I'm to lazy to get those rolls down.

I play bluegrass mandolin, have played guitar for over eight years. I would love to jam with some people, if you're interested PM me or something.

Oh, and Nickel Creek so isn't fake bluegrass. With a mandolin player that had a CD out when he was like eight it would be hard for him to be faking it...

Anybody ever been to the OBX Bluegrass Festival on Roanoke Island? I have kicked around the idea for the last couple of years, but have never pulled the trigger. Is it fun/worth it?

I'm planning on going to the street festival thing tonight and tomorrow night. Any groups not to miss?
I know I wanna see the Kruger Brothers and Chatham County Line...not sure what else.

I spent pretty much all day out at wide open bluegrass... just got back. Had a blast.

As far as bands to see tomorrow at the streetfest, I really enjoyed the Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen set today at the convention center. I'm torn between catching them again for a longer set or seeing the Infamous Stringdusters who are playing at the same time in the amphitheater.

What bands did you enjoy listening to at Wide Open?

The Kruger Brothers
Frank Sullivan & Dirty Kitchen
Chatham County Line (homer pick)
The Boxcars
Balsam Range

A shitload of groups playing inside the Marriott...that was actually the most fun for me, wandering throughout the hotel listening to the bands scattered all around the first floor.

Really didn't like The Steeldrivers. The dude's singing was annoying.

Funny to me that people are talking about Dirty Kitchen because they're the one band that got torched for bitching about monitors.

^^^^^ Did anyone see that Streetfest graphic in poster form? I'd like to get a series of flyers/posters from the event framed since they had a similar theme but different instruments and slightly different color schemes.

Punch Brothers, Del McCoury Band, and Bradford Lee Folk & the Bluegrass Playboys were my favorites.

Also, I was lucky enough to watch Bela & Abigail's duo set from about five feet away in a hotel room with ~35 other people, but that was obviously on a whole different level. Couldn't really believe that was happening even as I sat there.
