So I'm curious what you guys think about fuel (and oil) additives? Are any of them any good? If so which ones, why are they so good and how often do you use them? It seems like one could be just pouring $ in the trash unless there's some evidence to back them up. Also any way this stuff can harm cars?

I'm also wondering about Lucas Oil's products. Most gas additives use some kind of solvent, where as the Lucas Oil has lubricants in it. Since its the only fuel additive I've seen using these lubricants I wonder if that is better or worse than the others?

While we're on the topic of gas, my Pathfinder's manual recommends 91 or greater octane gas. Can any harm be done by using 87?

I use the fuel additave all the time. It seems to run a little quieter, but that may just be imagination. I have a mechanical injection pump with alot of hours on it and want to give it every advantage i can. The transmission stuff is good, and the powersteering stuff is good. I have used both. Is it anybetter than Seafoam or Amsol? We may never know.

fuel/oil additives will only help if you are trying to cover up some sort of problem or you're a freak and you want to update the add. pack in the oil. in an engine in good condition, you won't notice a difference at all. marvel mystery oil is also made up of lubricants and will do the same thing. it's not going to harm the car, only lighten your wallet.

techron fuel additive is good b/c of the amt. of cleaners in it.

3m fuel system cleaner, redline sl1, etc...

STP is crap.

you should only use them once in a while before an oil change b/c some of it will wash down the cylinder walls and contaminate the oil.

if your pathfinder "reccomends" but doesn't "require" premium, then you'll only be missing some power when accelerating. the computer should do the rest. if it requires the use of 91+ then you should only use it.

Actually, Lucas has some good heavy weight oil that is effective (its like 30w50 or some viscocity(sp) like that) Anywho, if you played with those minature gear boxes in advanced where it shows gears without the lucas additive and one with a 1:4 lucas:motor oil solution, you can physically see that lucas is the shit (not George, but he is still the man.) I add lucas to my car, runs smoother, and quieter... Don't use gas additives, unless you plan on replacing your plugs anyways.

it just leaves them with a light coating of color.

has to do with the combustion of the additives.

using lucas will just screw up your gas mileage if you use it in an engine in good condition.

also if you have a high performance engine, the lucas will cause your oil to foam, thus reducing it's ability to stick to parts, carry away heat, etc...

if you are that curious, go ahead and use them.
