quote]A British man has allegedly become the first person in the world to beat HIV.

A number of newspapers reported that Andrew Stimpson, 25, was diagnosed with the virus in 2002. He later tested negative in 2003.

Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust, which carried out the tests, now want him to undergo more before it can be established how he apparently beat the disease. Mr Stimpson said he did not take any medication for HIV.

A spokeswoman said: "These tests were accurate and they were his, but what we don't know at the moment is why that has happened, and we want him to come back in for more tests. It is potentially a fantastic thing."

Stimpson was tested three times in August 2002 at the Victoria clinic for sexual health in central London.

The results showed he was producing HIV antibodies to fight the killer disease.

He took vitamins and other dietary supplements in the hopes that this might prevent full-blown Aids from developing.

After impressing doctors with his good health, Stimpson was offered a new test in 2003.

It came back negative, and further tests in December 2003 and March 2004 also proved negative.

He told a newspaper: "It was the last thing I expected. I was astonished. I was baffled too.

"I couldn't understand how anyone could cure themselves of HIV . . . I thought it had to be wrong because no one can recover from HIV, it just doesn't happen."

The tests were re-checked by the Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust and they confirmed all the tests had been accurate.

The case has baffled medical experts and they want to study Mr Stimpson in the hope that they can learn more about beating HIV.[/quote]

i heard this story this morning and i seriously and i just can't believe that the initial test was positive

not trying to be pessimistic here- i think it's great if he beat it. but i just think it'd be wrong to get a lot of people's hopes up and then find out that it was all an error.

yeah, you'd think any self-respecting scientist would insist on confirming the results before releasing them.

Yeah, I think it's an error too, but scientifically, there are some people out there who are genetically immune to such diseases, they are just so far and few that noone knows it.

1) Assuming the tests were valid, I doubt he's the only one. People can go into remission from pretty much any disease, for reasons that aren't understood.

2) People shouldn't get their hopes up. Again, even if the tests were correct, the fact remains that HIV is a very deadly virus. Don't take your chances with it because of one guy's story.

HIV tests can come back negative if its in such small amounts, you can't detect it. You still have it ... I wouldn't trust this guy's donated blood.

He wouldn't be the first - I remember reading about a little girl that was born with HIV then later tested negative when I was in high school, but I don't remember where I read it so it's probably fake.

I too call lab error.

now that CAN happen...babies can develop antibodies that kill off their "born-with" HIV as they get older.
so i guess they are calling this guy "the first" b/c it's an adult who was diagnosed with HIV and contracted late in life but now is negative

I thought that some babies born to mothers with AIDS produced the antibodies so they tested positive at birth, but later turn out not to have had the disease at all.

if this were true they would have found a cure for aids but researching these "supposed" anti-bodies.

It is possible to put the disease so far into remission that the virus is barely detectable, but this is typically only seen with highly-active antiretroviral therapy (the current mainstream treatment). One of the major goals of current research is to develop drugs that will kill the latent forms of the virus, instead of just targeting the active forms as we do now.

And ^^that's also been considered. A person who contracts HIV initially develops antibodies that keep the virus in check, but at some point, for some reason that still isn't really understood, the balance is lost and the virus takes over.

hmmmm, depends, not hard to test for this really, just get some of his blood, put in some HIV virus and see what happens....

I'm sure someone somewhere has actually gotten the disease and never had it progress.... only a matter of time before we find it and copy the bits that stop it....

I dunno... I've heard of people wiping out cancer by simply eating whole foods rich in antioxitants, etc. and taking care of themselves
