I haven't read any more than the headline and I can tell you this is a bad idea. Since all learning can't come in the form of video games it's just getting kids addicted so they'll be artificially ADD when they have to actually read.

Also, why can't pRon be educational? I think I would learn something if maybe they could work a little calc or something in there.

Anyway, bad idea...can it.

Teaching in a video game? What a radical idea!

It taught me that you were and idiot of you didn't pick 'banker' as a profession. Money = better chance for survival. Oregon Trail was pretty much a "swears and dirty words on tombstones simulator" where I went to school.

Oregon Trail contained quite a few historic spots that people taking the trail at that time would have stopped at, and you could 'talk' to people in the towns
also it made the dangers facing thoes taking the trail more apparent, and the fact that river crossings are a pain, esp. when 9 oxen die in 5 feet of water

and yeah, the ones with more money make it easier, lesson in life there

http://www.classicgaming.com/rotw/otrail.shtml

two links at the bottom, one for the game files, one for the emulator, use applewin
there is a dos version, but the ones I found in my brief search weren't free

Come on, they already have great educational games out there. Oregon Trail was history, Amazon Trail was science, Math Blaster was math, and Lemmings were engineering.

Where in The World is Carmon Sandiego - Geography

but yeah, all thoes games are old, all have relitivly poor graphics now (which were usually very good for their time)
new ones are needed, hopefully with improved graphics

You have to make these games a little more exciting for kids nowadays, that's why I think a game like "Grand Theft Auto: Seasame Street" would work a little better. You could have them count out how many bullets they shot, it would be a great learning experience.

Well, the kids I babysit have those leapster learning video game systems. They're fairly entertaining. You get to spell with Spiderman and shit.

Oregon Trail taught me that if you shoot 750 lbs of buffalo, you can only take 100 lbs back to the wagon

guess the pioneers never heard of taking more than one trip

This is going to fail through the floor, seriously. Middle schoolers don't play video games to learn, they're busy smashed into pegs to be placed into the system. Sure, some of them may like video games, but, "THIS GAMEZ SUCKS IT HAS TOO MACH WARDS AOLOL".

i have oregon trail for PC on 3.5" floppies

like the original disks. they still work just fine too.

oh! we also played this number/math game where you got the pieces to make different bombs. it was an apple II game, like number munchers and stuff. anybody remember it? that would be such a no-no now to have bomb-making game. lol

remember the game where u played this weird detective guy, walking through this crazy dudes TV station solving math problems til u found him?

everytime a robot came toward you u had to zap him with a remote, and then solve a math problem

i think u had to find out what room the crazy dude was hiding in or somethin, by solving math problems, that game was the shit
