what are his hobbies? maybe a specialized gift card at stores he can't usually shop at - art supplies, ski equip, photography, fishing, bike shop, etc. (i.e. my cousin is really into woodworking, so i gave him a gift card to a specialty wood working store that carries stuff he usually couldn't afford on his own). or if you know what he has and doesn't have but would like to have, you might could pick up something relating to his hobby - i.e. paints for an artist, memory cards or filters for a photographer, camel back if he likes biking, camping gear, etc.

if you know what his fav band is, maybe 2 tix to a concert

based on his hobbies, a year subscription to a relevant magazine or journal

maybe a set of craftsman tools from sears (day after thanksgiving, they have a big sale)
