Quote : | " Rumsfeld given Iraq withdrawal plan Plan calls for troops to begin pulling out after December elections
Friday, November 18, 2005; Posted: 11:17 p.m. EST (04:17 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The top U.S. commander in Iraq has submitted a plan to the Pentagon for withdrawing troops in Iraq, according to a senior defense official.
Gen. George Casey submitted the plan to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. It includes numerous options and recommends that brigades -- usually made up of about 2,000 soldiers each -- begin pulling out of Iraq early next year.
The proposal comes as tension grows in both Washington and Baghdad following a call by a senior House Democrat to bring U.S. troops home and the deaths of scores of people by suicide bombers in two Iraqi cities. " |

^ god dammit
I get it now. They propose a bill to withdraw troops at the same time that the general proposes it, and the "caring" republicans came up with the idea to withdraw them.
i'd rather they be withdrawn and give the republicans clout than stay in, but that's so sad 11/18/2005 11:51:50 PM |

Top Pentagon officials have repeatedly discussed some of those milestones: Iraqi troops must demonstrate that they can handle security without U.S. help; the country's political process must be strong; and reconstruction and economic conditions must show signs of stability." |

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CHANGE YOUR MIND WHEN MORE INFORMATION BECOMES AVALIABLE
seriously, ask them. im sure theyd say "based on information at the time, we thought it was a good idea, but hindsight is 20/20" 11/20/2005 2:24:13 PM |

^It's more than that. Congress didn't have the same information as the White House. Congress only saw what the administration wanted them to see. Big difference between being misled and a simple, "hindsight is 20/20".

^ I'd amend that a little, but agree with the sentiment overall. Congress didn't vote to go to war. Yep, they're supposed to, but they punted that responsibilty to the president.
So yeah, they voted to give the president the leeway to wage war and spend shit-tons of money in doing so, but Bush is the cat that ultimately sent in the troops via the Warpowers Act.
Whatever. This is a huge clusterfuck that neither the dems or pubs is willing to take the blame for. Fucking pussies. 11/21/2005 2:49:42 PM |

BILL O'REILLY IS A FAGOTTY FLIP-FLOPPER!
Quote : | "O'Reilly Column Says U.S. Needs Timetable to Get Out of Iraq
NEW YORK Conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly writes in his current column that there needs to be a timetable for the U.S. to leave Iraq.
"Let's win the damn thing," he said in his Creators Syndicate feature. "But there must be a time limit. Mr. Bush and his crew have to understand that American blood and treasure are not unlimited. It is not undermining the war to suggest giving the Iraqis a realistic private timetable to defend themselves. Basic training for a U.S. soldier is six weeks. We've been training the Iraqi army for almost two years now. Even Gomer Pyle would be up to speed."
The Fox News host added that "polls show most Americans have turned against the war, and who can blame them with the media pounding home a depressing picture every day? And there are plenty of depressing images to show. Although most of the country is pacified, Baghdad remains a nightmare. ... But voting is happening, and business is being done. So let's build on that and give the Iraqis a realistic time frame to fight their own fight. ... We need to get out of there."" |

perhaps im wrong, but when i used to watch o'reilly last year he always was in favor of a timetable. timetable isnt the same as cut and run or not going in at all.
not wanting a timetable for anything concerning politics would be a relatively dumb stance. 11/22/2005 11:14:58 PM |

Soooo, setting a timetable would embolden the terrorists. At the same time, The Iraqi government, General Casey, and now The Pentagon are discussing timetables for partial to full troop withdrawals beginning in 2006.
Quote : | ""Barring any major surprises in Iraq, the Pentagon tentatively plans to reduce the number of U.S. forces there early next year by as many as three combat brigades, from 18 now, but to keep at least one brigade "on call" in Kuwait in case more troops are needed quickly, several senior military officers said.
Pentagon authorities also have set a series of "decision points" during 2006 to consider further force cuts that, under a "moderately optimistic" scenario, would drop the total number of troops from more than 150,000 now to fewer than 100,000, including 10 combat brigades, by the end of the year, the officers said." |
