Kraken himself was only ~ 40$. His lifespan is only about a year or two, though... but he's predatory, and will eat anything else in the tank (including another octopus)... so I figure he's a great way to have a cheap overall setup... and he's hella fun to play with

30 gallons is way too small for discus. I had 2 in a 55 gallon and they got way to big for that. cool looking octopus though

Kraken's smart as hell. He has this one jar with holes in the side... he'll pull goldfish out by the tails, but the heads are usually too big. Once he managed to unscrew it to get at the head inside, but he usually just gives up after about half an hour. I put in some legos that he'll move around from time to time... but hasn't really figured out how to put them together (just pull apart). He recognises my roommates and me, and usually stays out when we're around, but will hide if strangers stop by.

As far as upkeep... a goldfish a day, checking the water toxins weekly, and doing a 10 gallon water change every month seems to be a decent enough schedule. I'm guessing about 20$ a month? Most of that is buying salt and RO water (because my tap has crazy-high nitrate levels). Kraken has been pretty resiliant. I had the salt up sky-high once, but brought it down slowly and everything was cool. I feed him well (6-8 goldfish a week, which are about 15 cents each), so that might be something to blame for my success. I just have an under-gravel filter (can't really justify a 150$ a protein skimmer), which seems to be enough...

elise, a 44 gal should be enough a pet store will say otherwise, but you'd be lucky to find someone working at one that has even seen an octopus before, let alone cared for one.

MacGyver, Kraken likes tugging on my hand, but doesn't really bite. it feels kinda cool. ii have some legos in there, and odd-shaped rocks and jars.

Queti, http://www.octopets.com is a great bet. you can put a request in at an aquarium shop, but you'll have to wait a while... usually like 2 or 3 months, and the day he comes in you should probably go pick him up so they won't have to acclimate him to their own tanks.

UJustWait84, yep bimacs change from an almost invisible ghost-white to a dark coffee. he can do half of his body one and another half... or just his eyes, or do a texture. oh yeah, he can change the texture of his skin too. he can ink, but it's bad because the ink just circulates in the water, and eventually needs to be changed out. i do about 10% changes every month.

anyone going to be around raleigh from the 17th to the 26th? i had like a dozen goldfish, and asked my roommate to give him one a day til i got back. i got back and they were all gone. i'm looking for an octopus sitter.

it's pretty damn cool the first few times to see him hunt

took this with my camera, so the framerate and res really sucks. enjoy.

thanks, i wanted the center to be the only thing open once the plants took over, but i'm having the opposite problem now as my amazon swords are having problems. I've tried about everything from fertilization to pruning, but I think my main problem is lack of good lighting....

This is probably my favorite picture of my tank that I've taken:

Those are my glass catfish, part of my 55-gallon planted tank. As long as I'm here with other aquarists, I need some advice:
This picture was taken about a year ago when my plants were thriving. Now they are all almost completely dead. I have 240w of CF lighting, a 400gph Emperor filter and a 120gph one on the other side, a 20lb Co2 tank that bubbles through a powerhead, and fluorite with undergravel fertilizer. I add kH booster, hardening powder, iron, and potassium with weekly water changes and keep a close eye on my chemistry which is always fine. WHY WILL MY PLANTS NOT GROW?

It's really frustrating because I feel like I've tried everything and nobody can seem to give me any useful advice. I know there are other hobbyists out there who know what the hell they're doing...help me please?

fish world will test you water for you for free (fish pros charges for just about anything but ammonia and nitrite... i.e. nitrate, the important one, is 1$).

^that's retarded that they charge money for water test. IMHO, if you're gonna have an aquarium, a water-testing kit is a must have. Most of fish deaths can be prevented by maintaining the proper water parameters.

I'm guessing an octopus would eat seahorses? Cause seahorses are pretty to see, but I'm assuming octopuses would be more active.
