I can't think of anything to give my bf's parent's for Christmas. I asked him and of course, he was absolutely no help. The roommate said give the Mom some candles and be done with it. But.. then I leave the Dad out. And.. if you were the one being left out.. you wouldn't like that. I would say your feelings would be hurt be he is not a very nice man.. so he probably doesn't feel. So I was thinking.. GIFT CARD! to walmart.. but then I am informed "They hate Walmart" So.. then what do I do? They don't go out.. they don't really like eachother? And he has 3 brothers.. a 5 year old that I have to get something b/c it's Christmas and he'll be like "Where's my present" in that lil' sweet kid voice.. and a 9th grader that I can shoot w/a decent shirt. The eldest, is like 22 and doesn't wear anything but John Deer stuff.. who I rarely speak to. So what do I do? What do I buy?

b/c its easy when you see them maybe once a month and they are very hard people to please. then they could get gas, food, or whatever the hell else they wanted. plus, i live in a small town.. it's all we have.

You're 18 years old and not married so therefore why do you feel the need to get them anything? Getting a whole family Christmas presents is something married couples do and I'm pretty sure his family doesn't expect you to get them anything and would feel kind of wierd if you do.

my parents told me if anyone asked what they wanted for christmas, giftcards to lowes, target, eating places, blockbuster, etc... were always appreciated.
and my mother loves those yankee candles..she'd be satisfied getting a large one of those...

for the bro who loves john deere, go to cracker barrel. they always have a bunch of john deere clothing/ merchandise.

ok, go to marshalls or tjmaxx and save some $$:

mom - they have tons of nice lotions, bath salts, linen spray, etc.

dad - they carry lots of random gadgets like flashlight/radios, golf stuff, tie racks, etc. also have cologne.

little kid - they carry toys. legos are a good bet.

9th grader - gift card to some music store

22 year old - go to a john deere dealor and get him a shirt or hat

OR get mom and dad together one of those popcorn package things at wal-mart (tub, candy, popcorn, etc.)

where I am from and how I was reared, you always buy.. not because you are supposed to but because you want to. I love giving presents.. I have bought waaay too many as it is.. but still.. and I know I am not obligated in getting them something.. but I want to. And I'm not 18 and this isn't some petty relationship.

I'd say a gift card to a nice restaurant or something that was for both of them. I remember the first year that I bought for my husband's parents (then my boyfriend), I got them a cute set of breakfast dishes that came with coffee and cereal. It was like $50 and they loved it.

the john deer stuff is so overrated.. they have a farm.. so john deer gives them free stuff.. they should when you pay that much for those dang tractors. his daddy just had a heart attack so he isn't supposed to be doing all that much around the house... not like he does anyway.. that's why he has 4 boys to do..

just because you are relationshiply challenged doesn't mean other people are. maybe you should stop being so pessimistic and your chances might increase.

the rest. card is a good idea but they hate going places together.. it's sad.. really sad.

yankee? no, sweetie, Southern born and bred.

I just don't feel the need to take pride in slavery. Explain how it's not prejudice?

first of all
there is nothing wrong with being a yankee

and i just get my boyfriend's family a card every year.
he has 4 siblings and there is no way i can afford to get presents for them
if i were to get something for the whole family, it would be food, simply because that is something everyone can enjoy. this year i might bake them a cake, or make them cookies and some snack mix.

because you people can't answer a fucking question without bashing the poster (chit chat, its ok of course). i mean really. get off your high horse and answer her question or at least make a new topic instead of ruining the original.

*don't take this to mean i am supporting the poster's accused beliefs.

I guess Queen Latifah's mother missed the memo. Sorry sounds like a tough decision. Given that the dad is grumpy just don't get him anything. He will probably get mad that you got him smthg in the first place (thats how my dad can be). So just get the mom a gift and the little ones

----------------

You should get them a small gift card to a nice restaurant (which means "not fast food") and/or just offer to watch the little kid one night for them so they can go out.

I don't think you're responsible to get anyone else anything other than candy, seeing as how you've been dating for under a year.

I made my ex's family a gift with a fleece blanket, nice chocolates, candies, toys for the kids, and things they could share as a family (such as fruit) and put it all in a nice non-christmas-y basket that could be reused.

I would go with the food options! Get some cute plastic tubs (you can often get those at Wal-Mart during Christmas in seasonal housewares for under $3 each) and fill them up with homemade goodies. Personal favorites:

1) Those chocolate dipped peanut butter balls.
2) Chocolate covered pretzels - dip the pretzels yourself, rods or twists...if you have a chance before you leave Raleigh, swing by AC Moore and get some mint chocolate flavored candy melts and use those to dip the chocolate in. They may also carry the candy melts in Wal-Mart in the cake decorating (both seasonal and in crafts).
3) Sausage balls...though you have to get those back to the fridge!
4) Cookies - you can go basic (slice and bake) or go crazy with the cookie cutters and decorations.

If your bf knows anything about his family's food preferences (ie, one sibling really loves M&Ms) label the gifts for each person based on that. Otherwise, just give as a whole. I've never heard of anyone complaining about recieving baked goods!

It amuses me how many Southerners paste the Confederate flag everywhere in honor of their "Rebel Pride". Maybe they have forgetten that THE SOUTH LOST THE WAR!! PASTING THE REBEL FLAG EVERYWHERE WILL NOT CHANGE THAT!! AND THEY DIDN'T JUST LOSE; THEY WERE CRUSHED UTTERLY BY THE NORTH. COMPLETE DEVASTATION. SO BASICALLY WHAT YOU ARE CELEBRATING IS BEING LOSERS, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE WHO LOSE ARE! I'm seriously considering making Confederate flag bumper sticker that has the words "YOU LOST" in big white letters ( or whatever shows up best). I especially love going to West Virginia and seeing the Rebel flag because most people up there are ignorant of the fact that the West Virginia broke away from Virginia for the sole reason of not wanting to be in the Confederacy (they wanted to stay in the Union, I guess they realized it was doomed to failure).

You shouldn't have to get anyone anything. I realize that life isn't so easy, and people are selfish, but you shouldn't feel obligated to get these people anything. Especially if this is just your boyfriend. Unless you and this guy are picking out rings, I seriously wouldn't let it ruin my holidays. Hell, I'm married and I'm not flipping out over what to get my in-laws.

You can't force someone to want to do something. I want to give presents to everyone in my family, too. But I also want to pay my bills at the end of the month without bouncing a check.

My parents got a decorative star shaped box filled with all sorts of candy. It probably cost less than 20 dollars in all, but it was simple, thoughtful, and she wasn't trying to overly impress anyone.
