Secret database obtained by NBC News tracks ‘suspicious’ domestic groups
By Lisa Myers, Douglas Pasternak, Rich Gardella and the NBC Investigative Unit Updated: 7:51 p.m. ET Dec. 13, 2005
WASHINGTON - A year ago, at a Quaker Meeting House in Lake Worth, Fla., a small group of activists met to plan a protest of military recruiting at local high schools. What they didn't know was that their meeting had come to the attention of the U.S. military.
A secret 400-page Defense Department document obtained by NBC News lists the Lake Worth meeting as a “threat” and one of more than 1,500 “suspicious incidents” across the country over a recent 10-month period.
[...]
The Defense Department document is the first inside look at how the U.S. military has stepped up intelligence collection inside this country since 9/11, which now includes the monitoring of peaceful anti-war and counter-military recruitment groups." |
What's next? Keeping files on people who "oppose the government" and object to our corrupt political leaders?
And I assume some will tell us that the military spying on Americans for their views--like torture, lying to start wars, destroying our freedoms, and turning the country into a surveillance state--is "good".12/14/2005 8:27:06 AM |

they really are watching you but don't worry big brother is good living in a Stalin-esque, Nazi-style surveillance state is good
the government needs to keep files on people who oppose the war in Iraq those people are "threats" they're "aiding the enemy" and "supporting the terrorists" they're "anti-American" they might even be "terrorists"
they're probably "anti-government extremists" who hate our government opposition to the government will not be tolerated the government is good if you oppose the government, you are with the terrorists you are either with us or against us

Quote : | "Feds ramp up spying on journalists, other Americans
By DOUG THOMPSON Publisher, Capitol Hill Blue Nov 21, 2005, 05:12 Using powers granted under the USA Patriot Act, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has stepped up surveillance of journalists in an effort to plug leaks from a scandal-weary Bush administration.
Wiretaps, intercepts of electronic communications and daily monitoring of reporters’ activities are part of a program authorized by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Justice Department sources say.
Increased surveillance of journalists is only part of a stepped-up federal efforts to monitor day-to-day activities of Americans. Last week, the Federal Communications Commission set an 18-month deadline for broadband Internet Service Providers to make their systems “wiretap-ready.”
“This is like saying, `Everybody has to keep their doors unlocked because the FBI might need to get in,’” says Mark Rasch, a former Justice Department attorney who handled computer crime cases and now senior vice president and chief security counsel of Solutionary Inc., a computer security consulting company in Omaha. “The harm of everybody keeping their doors unlocked all the time is much greater than the benefit.”" |

Its their job to keep tabs on everyone and assess any possible threat. They can't just wait fro something to fester unnoticed and then emerge fully organized and with us having no practical info on them. Its the same reason why lots of people have a "file" with the FBI. Like my father, he was in Special Forces and later went through Communications in the Army. He had a high level secuirty clearance and at one point as the head key code guy for nuke launching in Germany. If he started getting involved in anti-war activist groups the FBI would be interested because of his knowledge and expereince. They wouldn't be tapping our home phones or anything but if his name started emerging in more and more radical groups it would probably raise some eyebrows. Or think of environmental and animal rights activists. Most are pretty harmless left-wingers who are simply overly sensitive to their cause. Now, there are some militant groups out there but the government never knows what groups might start working with militant ones and themselves become "terrorists". Most money to terrorist groups is funneled through benign organizations anyways. I just don't see anything sinister going on, simply logical. This country will never reach police state because the people have too much power.12/14/2005 4:04:25 PM |

Quote : | "I just don't see anything sinister going on, simply logical. This country will never reach police state because the people have too much power." |
Right. The people have all the power. That's why 85-90% of them oppose illegal immigration and nothing is done about it. Or why ~65%+ oppose the war in Iraq, and Bush just brushes off legitimate concerns and says "stay the course." The politicians are controlled and implement the agenda of the ruling elite. The beliefs of the common people are no concern. The major thing that does stand in the way of a total police state is the Second Amdendment and private firearm ownership. I look for the government to come after firearms before a full-blown police state is implemented.
All the things that are happening show that a police state is currently being implemented. The government can already search anybody without a warrant under the Patriot Act. They can hold people indefinitely without trial (including U.S. citizens; eg, Padilla). They are admittedly spying on people who oppose the war, and creating secret files/databases on them. The Congress has passed what is, in effect, a national ID card. Surveillance cameras are being put up everywhere in major cities.
Then you have the Bush Administration (and the phony conservatives in the media) alleging that critics of the war are "irresponsible" and suggesting they are "aiding the terrorists." It's not hard to see where this may be going. According to Bush himself, "you are either with us (ie, the government), or with the terrorists." Someone could be snatched off the street and imprisoned without a trial, and all the government would need to do is claim the person is a "terrorist." To boot, the person could be tortured (even to death), and even if that becomes public knowledge the government would defend that as well saying they needed to torture them "to protect us from an attack."
Then you have instances of disturbing government activity, such as what occured after Katrina in and around New Orleans and at the 2004 Republican National Convention in NYC. After Katrina, the FEDS declaired martial law and confiscated the firearms of citizens, and at the RNC, scores of people were arrested (without legitimate cause) and held in "detention center" camps in NYC. Those were "tests" for the coming martial law police state. They also act to condition people to accept martial law. Then you have Bush openly talking about martial law and soldiers on the streets following any "bird flu" outbreak.
Oh, and remember, all this happens WHILE THE BORDER STAYS WIDE OPEN.
