Might plan a Feb/Mar trip to Lake Tahoe and need to figure out which mountain to go to. Probably be a short weekend trip - 2-3 days skiing only. My husband has NEVER skiied before so looking for an abundance of wide, flat greens for him to keep him occupied and some decent lessons. I haven't been in a couple of years - I'm a decent/good skiier, any blues, most blacks (all east coast and am fine on most in the skiing i've done in colorado), no jumps tho and not a fan of mogel covered slopes. recommendations?

If that's all you plan on skiing it doesn't matter where you go. I guess if he is getting lessons go somewhere with the best adult ski school.

Sugarbowl is my favorite, but Northstar and Kirkwood would be 2 I'd also consider - given what you mentioned.

Sugarbowl was recently updated and should be very good for beg. - interm skiing.
Also has plenty other things to do if you husband decides that falling down sucks.
Northstar is about 25% beg. and 50% interm.
Kirkwood has less beginner slopes, but more to do according to friends.

I have skied most of the resorts at lake tahoe. They were all really good, but you can't beat the views from Heavenly. At the top of the mountain you can see out over the entire lake, it's pretty amazing. I also enjoyed sugarbowl a lot. Heavenly is close to some casinos, so if the hubby gets tired of busting his arse, he has something else to do.

Heavenly. Ridge run is beautiful.
I really enjoy Alpine too, six person hyper lift to the summit from the base, summit is an enormous bowl. On the way down there's plenty of blue or black and you can even get a terain park and then do it again.

I learned to snowboard at Sugarbowl and can vouch for the very nice bunny slope.

Oh, btw, why not teach your husband to ski (and brush up yourself) here in the apalachians before heading out west? Seems like a waste to learn out there.

cause i live in louisiana... we're coming home for christmas but don't have time to do a day trip to wv or boone. but we might come home later on. if so, then i'd definitely take him to winterplace (my parents live on the nc/va line off 77 so it is only 1:30 drive) first.

[Edited on December 14, 2005 at 4:15 PM. Reason : thanks for all the suggestions... i am looking at heavenly pretty strongly]

Snappy lunch is the only thing worth going to there (probably not a true statement, but close)

oh hell no its not. greasiest food on the planet and nothing but tourists. the only reason i go is to visit family. well, and to actually see a decent landscape (southern la is nothing but swampy flatness).

ok there are some decent little b&b. you can go on the parkway. couple of decent restaurants - a greek one, a thai one (iffy but better than mcds), aha and now there is even a ruby tuesday!

Heavenly was awesome. I remember getting lessons, a snowboard, and an all-day lift ticket for about $60.
