if you got married, we'd hope you stayed married longer than you dated her...so the length of an engagment doesn't matter.

If your 19 year old girlfriend is sweating your nuts about marriage already, you need to drop her like a bad habit. Engagement, marriage, etc. needs to be done on one's own schedule...it's not something you do because of pressure. 19 is so young.

I don't need a ring to get mad at my boyfriend for fucking someone else.

a promise ring is not a pre-engagement ring, imo.

a promise ring, as already stated, just means that you're not going to date anyone else. it's a gaelic tradition. mine says "vous et nul autre". promise rings are really cheap, like $20-50.

a pre-engagement ring has a stone on it, and is exactly that...something slightly cheaper than a real engagement ring and has more to do with actual marriage than dating.

now with that said, if you've been dating for like 5 years and your'e in your late 20s and you're just now getting a promise ring, that sucks. get engaged or get out. promise rings are an earlier on in the relationship kinda deal, for younger folks, imo.

I guess i would wear the ring if a bf came up with it all by himself, just to be nice. But ya i agree the idea of a promise ring is retarded.

oh, here's a good one

Isn't marriage just a promise to remain faithful for the rest of your lives. So essentially an engagement is a promise to promise. This jewelry stuff and ritualistic materialism: it's all bullshit, yet you all think your level of participation is somehow acceptable.

go fuck yourself

heh, this thread reminds me of this arrested development episode:

Quote :
"George Michael: You know, it’s really great you did this. I-I thought you didn’t really even like Ann, but you know, since you do, I thought I could get your opinion. I was thinking of giving her, like, a-a pre-engagement...

Michael: Ring?

George Michael: Yeah.

Michael: Wow, that catches me off guard, George Michael. I’m not sure about that. I just... I don’t know if it’s... I think... I think it’s going to backfire on you. I think that it could backfire on you because it’s going to seem like you’re taking marriage, uh, lightly, you know, and you can’t. It’s very sacred. Sacred. Yeah. That’s it.

George Michael: All right, well, yeah. You know, I guess it did kind of feel right to me, but, yeah, if you... I’ve got to trust you, right?

Michael: Thank you, thank you.

George Michael: Yeah. Hey, maybe I should... maybe I should ask if she wants to get pre-pre-engaged. Add another...

Michael: The mere fact that you’re laughing about marriage means that you’re not ready, okay?"

I know this girl in my high school that got a promise ring from her boyfriend after dating for like 3 or 4 months. That shit cost more than my wedding rings. It was like a $5000 ring. (His parents were loaded, but still...) She went around bragging about it all year and then at the end of the year during senior week at Myrtle Beach he beat her ass and got arrested. They broke up...I wonder if she kept the ring?

I personally wouldn't mind skipping the whole "engagement" period, because as I see it, the only reason to even date somebody is if you're thinking about spending the rest of your life with them. That said, my fiance and I were boyfriend/girlfriend status for about 6 months (friends before that), but since I'm still kind of young and we're both working on getting our lives together, we're having a long "engagement" period (2 years plus.) I guess the only real reason for that is to show people that we really are serious about each other since "fiance/e" carries a lot more weight than "boyfriend/girlfriend."

A ring for celibacy is stupid. If you don't have the commitment without some ring to remind you, it just isn't going to happen.

PS
The engagement was his idea, not mine.

my ex girlfriend had a True Love Waits type of ring. She was very serious about it and I respected it.

My boyfriend gave me a ring when I was 19 and he was 21. We’d been dating 1 year. I guess you would call it a promise ring. It’s a sapphire with diamond chips.

After another year (2 years dating total), he proposed. We stayed engaged for two years and then married (17 years now, quite happily.)

There’s been a lot of negative comment, so let me give you some positive comment on promise rings.
1) It let me know he was serious about our relationship.
2) It gave me a good way to turn down other guys at dance clubs. (I would go clubbing with girlfriends some nights and boyfriend didn’t like to go.)
3) When my wedding ring is in for repair, which happens about once every 3 years when you’ve got a raised setting and takes at least a week, I’ve got something to put on my left ring finger and avoid any awkward questions about marriage status.
4) It’s a nice memory. He gave it to me on my 19th birthday at a fancy restaurant wrapped up in 5 different boxes. It took quite some time to get to the ring.

I’ll agree that giving someone a promise ring instead of an engagement ring beyond a point in the relationship can send the wrong message. I didn’t expect or ask for my ring, and it’s something I’m happy to have.

However, if she’s pressuring you into a ring, she’s probably not looking for a promise ring.

I met a girl last night who had a ring on her right ring finger.

I was like, "is that a promise ring?"

She said, "Yes it is actually, but its a promise ring to God"

I said "WTF"

She was like, "Yeah, to remind myself to stay faithful to God"

I ran away.

Yeah, nice sarcasm there. As I see it, both an engagement ring and wedding bands are there to say "I'm taken. Leave me alone." If it weren't for that, I would be quite happy, and faithful, without a ring.
