Documentary by Michel Gondry

Quote :
"A live show, a combination of comedy and music, that was shot on location last year, as comic Dave Chappelle threw a party in downtown Brooklyn, inviting local residents and cameras."

It's got Talib, Big Daddy Kane, Common, The Roots, Mos, Freeway, Dead Prez, Kool G. Rap, etc.

Knowing Gondry, Dave will multiply in the middle of the block party and one of the Daves will go crazy and move to Africa while the other chills with Charlie Murphy.

Column on his appearance on Oprah today.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/02/03/chappelle.winfrey.ap/index.html

Quote :
"CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Dave Chappelle told Oprah Winfrey he was stressed out and not crazy or on drugs when he abruptly left his hit Comedy Central show last spring during production.

In his first television interview since ditching "Chappelle's Show" in May, the comedian said that after he signed a $50 million deal for the third and fourth seasons in August 2004, too many people were trying to control him and his show.

"I wasn't crazy but it is incredibly stressful," Chappelle, 32, said during his appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that aired Friday.

"I felt in a lot of instances I was deliberately being put through stress because when you're a guy who generates money, people have a vested interested in controlling you," Chappelle said.

Last May, with the premiere date looming for the third season, Chappelle stunned his fans and the entertainment industry by leaving the show in mid-production. He spent two weeks in South Africa before returning home to his farm near Yellow Springs, Ohio, about 75 miles northeast of Cincinnati. Chappelle has since resumed performing live standup.

The provocative comedian denied reports that his mysterious departure was caused by mental or drug problems. But he told Winfrey that other people were trying to get him to take psychotic medication when he decided to leave the show and country, without telling anyone except his brother before he left.

Chappelle stressed that the fame that grew as his show became increasingly popular wasn't the problem, but the environment he faced at Comedy Central.

"I would go to work on the show and I felt awful every day, that's not the way it was" he said. "I felt like some kind of prostitute or something. If I feel so bad, why keep on showing up to this place? I'm going to Africa. The hardest thing to do is to be true to yourself, especially when everybody is watching."

The comedian did not rule out returning to film the rest of the third and fourth seasons of "Chappelle's Show" but only under certain circumstances. For example, Chappelle said he would like to donate a portion of the proceeds from DVD sales to the less fortunate.

The status of his show has hung in limbo since May. Comedy Central announced in December that four half-hour episodes of "Chappelle's Show" -- based on what Chappelle taped before leaving the production -- will premiere in weekly airings this spring. A full season would have been between 10 and 13 episodes."

The best part of that trailer was when he said, "It's on. We're taking on these white people for our freedom."

just screened this, it had its moments. the music was pretty good as well. just don't go in and expect to walk out laughing your ass off. a good portion of the documentary is dull and rather boring. luckily since we were screening it and there were only 4 of us we just made fun of shit on screen the whole time and provided our own comic relief.

just got back from the 7:50 showing at crossroads

dave was low key, which actually worked well for the movie; the music was front and center...and it was fucking sick

dead prez was great, wish they had more from the roots

super enjoyable movie. the roots, dead prez, and mos def were the highlights. it was cool to see dave chappelle just being a regular guy. the movie was shot before his break with Comedy Central and his split to Africa and I think through the movie you can see little insights as to why he was motivated to break out. awesome, funny, and interesting time.

Dave Dave Dave…. Where have you been my friend. We have all been waiting here patiently for you to come out with yet another season of the often raunchy, insanely outrageous, always hilarious, Chappelle show; yet here we are a 2 years after your last season began going through Chappelle withdraw. And guess what people he’s back, but not on the small screen.

Block Party is a 2006 (although it was filmed in 2004) version of the 1973 film Wattstax which featured the comic genius of the late Richard Pryor and other great musicians from that time period. Much like that documentary we follow Dave Chappelle on his quest to create an epic performance, featuring artists such as Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, The Roots, John Legend, Common, Kanye West, and the up and coming musician turned actor Mos Def. Chappelle manages to intermingle both comedy and political statements all throughout the film with such grace. There were a few collar yanking moments… but all and all I would say his comedy and the political angles were mixed in well.

WARNING: Do not go in there thinking this is going to be just like the Chappelle Show, this is a concert people.

Would I say he is back? He’s still funny too bad this was made 2 years ago…. But it was a deep movie and it gives people a totally different outlook on life from an urban view. It is definitely not for everyone, if you enjoy cursing… wait scratch that. CUSSIN’, Neo Soul music and hip-hop, don’t mind a chick with mush mouth from here to Australia, Dave Chappelle and black history factoids this is the film for you. If not…. perhaps you should stay away from this film or at the most rent it and watch in the privacy of your own home.

I watched it at 34th Street on Saturday night, but really wished I had watched it over at Bed-Stuy (though I don't know where any theatres are over there)... it makes you want to visit that ridiculous house-church thing in the background (corner of Downing and Quincy).

But, as someone else said, the film is more funny with a little audience participation. It's definitely a filmed concert, and nothing more, albiet, with all of the powerhouses of the BK underground scene over the past few years.

Mos Def isn't up and comming, he has been around for awhile now, he has been doing music since 1998, and has been acting since 1988, so he is a actor turned musician, not musician turned actor.

It was good and all but not worth watching in the movies, i wish i would have waited for the dvd.
