Looking for a shop who is flexible, skilled and fun to work with. I'm not looking for an individual although I know a bunch of you are more than qualified to do the work I'm looking to have done. Any recommendations for shops in the raleigh, durham, chapel-hill area would be appreciated. Thanks all. 1/31/2006 11:45:23 PM |

depends on what you want done i guess. i get there in 50min from cary, so its not that far.
if you want some nice custom stuff that takes experience and craftsmanship, id really check out AudioCraft. Joe does awesome custom work. Like OEM quality nice stuff. not ghetto fab bling your face off crap. well he does that too, i guess, all part of the game. but yeh, hes good.
If you just want a box, etc id go any old place. 2/1/2006 10:11:12 AM |

To the thread originator: What are you trying to have done? 2/1/2006 10:12:05 AM |

1. Sound deadening 2. take dash apart and install aux input 3. install screen into dash (has custom mount to fit into stock dash where the stock nav screen would be)
I think that's about it. #3 is not hard work, just not run-of-the-mill stuff either. 2/1/2006 10:20:41 AM |

Order Dynomat or less name brand online. It is a lot cheaper than in retail stores. Have it installed by someone on here. 2/1/2006 11:21:31 AM |

it's not hard to install...just a LOT of elbow grease.
well, that in addition to taking apart the entire interior to get down to metal. 2/1/2006 12:13:55 PM |

1. anyone can take apart the interior and lay down some sound deadening. at a shop you are going to pay out the ass for it because you are going to be paying them by the hour and they are probably charging $30+ per hour to do it.
2. you don't have to take apart an entire dash to install an aux input. usually you can just take out the radio. shit, in my buddies bmw 323 (or 325, don't remember), his aux input is in the trunk next to the cd changer.
3. installing a screen into a stock location with a custom mounting bracket that you already have is a no brainer dude. if there's no cutting involved, this basically amounts to a simple head unit install.

i wasn't refering to omar in my second post.
i agree...dynamat is a PITA to do. i was refering to stinkysocks being the fool because he wanted a shop to do this instead of someone cheap on here when everything that's being done is really all just run of the mill stuff, just not your usual run of the mill stuff. 2/1/2006 1:08:54 PM |

heh i've done a lot of (rather simple on the scale of typical garage work) DIY to my car with the help of others - complete audio overhaul on my old car
with the help of slut this car has an intake / sway bar / front strut bar - car pc
simple things such as removing the dash and the such aren't bad - i can take off the doors and get to the speakers and such - but i travel every week (monday->thursday i work in chicago) and if it can be done with me dropping it off during the week and me picking it up upon arrival then i'm much happier - time is money - and since i'm home a limited amount of time - if i have to be without my car it's even more of a hassle
i was under the understanding the installing dynamat/dynaxorb stuff wasn't just simply placing it in there and you need some sort of roller tool to make it work best - if you are offering to help dan tho i'll take it

it's not a matter of whether I can or cannot do it. At some point you realize that your time is worth something. You also realize that it's better to leave some things to professionals who do this day in and day out. I had a 97 mustang that I did all my own work on, and I also had that same 97 mustang that I made mistakes on and had to live with them (or spend even more time fixing them). This time around I want it done right, and if it's not done right I want it to be someone else's fault who can spend their time and money to fix it.
a fool and his money are easily parted. time is money. those who do not know the value of their time never have enough of it, those who do are called wealthy.

went by there this past weekend - they are out of business - they now do home audio - they still have some of their stock left and the guy said they would be doing a closeout sale in ~3weeks
i'm interested in getting some dynamat-like material for my 4 speakers in the car doors and 2 6x9s in the rear deck - hopefully the closeout sale will be worthwhile
they said they no longer do installation - anyone on here reputable for something like this or is putting in dynamat just as simple as taking the door off - haven't done it on this car yet - but finding instructions is pretty simple3/28/2006 2:26:39 PM |

I have some stuff for you for pretty cheap and probably enough to cover all this for you. It's from McMaster-Carr and will leave your car smelling asphalty for a couple weeks. It's pretty mild, but it works.
As far as applying, there isn't much to it, i've put it in with just my fingers and its fine, but I'd recommend a roller for pressing it on better. Also, wait around until it warms up, leave your car in the sun for awhile, and leave the dynamat out in the sun to, wipe down the surface you want to apply it to with alky and it will stick like flypaper.3/28/2006 3:55:09 PM |

dynamat is pretty easy to install... pretty much tinfoil on top of sticky asphalt. You just cut the strip you want then peel off the back and stick it to whatever is vibrating. This only deadens the sounds(good for getting rid of exterior road noise(a loud muffler) and slight vibrations)it doesnt completely eliminate noise. Bolts, Screws, Welding, etc. would be necessary to completely get rid of a rattle. If you can take off your door and know how to work a sticker then you can put on dynamat. As far as doing a complete install your looking at around $2000(Car Audio and Security on capitol out towards wake forest?) for a complete car which would be 2 layers top to bottom with seats carpet everything removed and reinstalled. 3/30/2006 12:25:53 AM |

Yea, most people agree. When I bought this stuff though I was in college and on a budget and it was less than half the cost of original dynamat for the exact same thing. And actually, now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure my Camaro smelled asphalty either because the stuff was brand new or because I installed it in the middle of summer. I put some in another car back last April/May and I didn't notice much of a smell (not as hot + material I have had for a few years now).

This weekend + your car in the sun for an hour or two is plenty of time. If you don't have that time to spare then either plan to have the shit fall off or pay someone to do it.3/30/2006 10:00:39 AM |

i've read good things about secondskinaudio - i'm hoping the closeout sale prices will be better than normal retail to make it cheap enough to not worry about
_____
i can take the doors off and the such - that's not a big deal - i read a few places that having a roller would help but it doesn't sound like it's required - currently there is no rattling/sound problem - just looking to improve the overall sound slightly while being cost efficient3/30/2006 2:47:18 PM |
