Ronny Great Photos.

I took my kid to Oval Park in Durham this mornign for a playgroup. Here's a quick photo story I threw together after the fact.

It was right before polls closed, between 7 and 7:30, so there was not a TON of traffic coming in. There was a long line inside though, and a woman at the location said turnout was probably 4x what she'd seen before.

Misc. from the other night. The lighting in Ruckus is the worst. Even with a 5D MkII shooting at 1.4 or 1.8, it was still grainy. So that's why they're black and white.

These are not technically SLR, but I found some old multiple exposure photos I made with a Fuji F20 in Paris and Versailles in 2007 (my NCSU graduation trip with Wolf Treks, yay!) and finally got to run them through the HDR process. I did not strive to achieve realistic-looking results, obviously. Just wanted something that looked cool.

I shot a wedding this weekend with a friend of mine down in Fayetteville. The bride went to VT and her father is a 4 star general, but the groom went to NCSU as did his sister. Now I'm curious if any of the folks that were there from his Wolfpack days were TDubbers.

Post if you can make it."

Anybody still going to be able to make this? Post and let us know! I might be going to a wedding earlier in the day but I can probably still make this if we are going to have a group show up.

What did you shoot with Bweez? Inquiring minds want to know whether crop sensors can handle live concert shoots or if those are best left to the 5D folk.

I mean, in a quality way.. my P&S can handle concerts as well, but not in any printable fashion

The only time I brought my 60D to a small local show even at 2.8 and 1/60 second shutter, my crop sensor needed ISO 2000-2500 to properly expose, which on crop sensor is not acceptable for anything other than small pics for the web. Colored spotlights mounted directly over the performers heads did not help. Maybe some fill flash next time?

Sadly, it looks pretty much same as the P&S :/

After shooting a bunch of gigs with a 5D, I don't even want to look at my 40D again. I know it's trite or whatever, but everything just looks different/better with a full frame body. Unless I was shooting heavy amounts of sports (or anything requiring long glass and high fps), I'd go with a full frame if given the option.

All of the shots posted here are with my 7D and all of them except the two old guys sleeping are with my 85mm f/1.8.

I want a 5D mk III but canon really fucked us with the price-tag and I'm half-tempted to get a D800.

Did I handle the live concert shoot?

Here is a good deal on a Mark III.

http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/74216/buydig.com-canon-5d-mark-iii-22.3-mp-full-frame-digital-slr-camera-24105mm-l-lens-speedlite-600exrt-flash-32gb-45mbsec-memory

^Also if anybody wants to do a concert one night with a small group and can get permission, I would be down and can help answer your question. I can shoot it with my D7000 and my 50mm 1.8 len, which comes out close to the full frame & 85 mm 1.8 you used above. We could even sync the settings and see how both cameras come out to do a full head to head test.

I've heard that from other photographer friends as well. With the Mark III out on the market, reasonably priced used MKIIs pop up on Craigslist pretty regularly. 60D was just much better adapted than any other camera for shooting video, and that was a priority for me. Also since most of my lenses are EF-S other than 50mm f/1.4, upgrade would be kind of expensive. However, I am entertaining the idea of getting MKII with the 24-105 or 24-70 and just keeping the 60D and all the lenses. Sometimes it helps to have two bodies.

Bweez, i meant that your pictures came out looking good IMO. Knowing that you were shooting with the 7D, I am now sure that my shitty concert pictures are due to user error on my part. I'll try again with the 50mm f/1.4 and possibly some fill flash.

Nighthawk if you can find a concert happening next Saturday night, i'd be down to shoot that as well.

I'd never get a 5D mk ii after getting so used to the 7D's far better AF system.

What lens was that 60D concert pic shot with?

EF-S 17-55 f/2.8, which usually rocks. Maybe the angle of the stage lighting and high contrast with ambient lighting fucked it up for me that time (Clarification: the first three pics are from S95, the last one is 60D with the 17-55)

Ok info for the Lake Crabtree get together. They are using 8:30 as a closing time, so if you want to meet up a couple hours before then we need to meet up at 6:00 to 6:30. Sunset is listed at 8:16 and twilight is 8:45 pm. So not sure how much of the sunset shots we will be able to get and then pack up and head out.

D3100 is very nice. Especially with the D3200 coming out now, you can probably get a good deal on a D3100. The biggest thing you miss on that is the ability to autofocus lenses that don't have the focus motor built in. I learned and shot for several years with a D40, which was 2 generations back from the D3100. The new camera has lots of additional features that my D40 does not.

is the 3200 out yet? I've seen preorders for $700

the 3100 is currently $550 just about everywhere I look

I'm hoping the price comes down a little more once the 3200 hits the market

^Yes they began shipping by the middle of April. Made it out in 2 weeks after the announcement. Now obviously they will be limited for a bit until shipments catch up, but yes the D3200 is out and available for purchase.

BTW has anybody ever hit up the Capital City Camera Club at Raulston? Meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month. I know a guy who apparently does that, but I have never been. Any of ya'll gone and had a good or bad experience? Maybe we could start showing up here as a group and pick up some stuff from them. They are meeting next Monday at 6:30. Here is the website:

http://www.capcitycameraclub.com/index.htm

If anybody else might be interested that is going on Saturday it would be nice to go with some folks that I have met already!

My wife, my father, and I went to Hanging Rock recently. She was pretty excited about making it to the top, and I think this was the event that motivated her to join the gym soon after.

Any ideas for shooting Saturday? I'm comfortable heading out to Crabtree still but it looks like it may be cloudy and drizzly later in the day which could put a damper on things.

There's a skateboarding competition going on at Marsh Creek Park in Raleigh during the day that we could go to as an alternative.

^ Great shots. My wife and I had similar motivation when we hiked Stone Mountain several years ago. We had just started losing weight and the excitement of being able to do that again kept us going to the gym all year.

Yea I too am concerned about the weather forecast. The hourly is not showing any rain, but is showing like 100% overcast, which screws us out of the sunset shots we were going to try to do. I was wondering if maybe we should just try and meet up at something else earlier in the day like the Got to be N.C Festival or something. Shooting skateboarding would be fun too. I pretty much had the entire day free so that I would have no conflicts and would not mind at all if ya'll want to meet up at one event and then head to something else. Even if we can't bring out all the lights and shit we can still shoot something.

Ronny, Igor what are your thoughts? I think you were the two others that had been pretty positive about making it.

Another topic, did anybody see this story about the lady who built an entire website of stolen photography and was passing it off as her own?

http://www.examiner.com/article/the-picture-of-dishonesty-social-media-slaps-down-a-wedding-photo-faker

Can't believe the balls of that chick, and the speed with which the story went so viral that her entire web presence was forever destroyed in one evening.

I was gonna drive down tomorrow and be in Raleigh by noon or so. I'd be down to shoot all day though. We can definitely do several locations. What time is the skate contest?

In terms of lights, I will have my Speedlights, which Canon people are welcome to use. I can also bring a 12v battery and a DC to AC inverter. Not exactly Vagabond, but it should work with your strobes, Nighthawk. I use this setup with 120V continuous CFL lighting every once in a while.

The link for the skate contest is http://www.rivalskateteam.com/blog/events/skate-for-life-2012/
It's a charity event and since I looked for alternatives at last minute, I have no idea what kind of attendance there will be. If it rains they are pushing it back to Sunday. I assume they will post something on their facebook if that happens http://www.facebook.com/RivalSkateboarding

I'm free all morning/afternoon and I don't care what/where we shoot.

Also, count me as a definite for Monday's Capital City Camera Club meeting.

There is also a classic British classic car show at North Hills tomorrow. Cars can be super easy or super hard to shoot outdoors, depending on the condition of the sky and time of the day. But I definitely would not mind trying.

My boys are 8 and 5. They are pretty good about following dad around and all, so its not like I have a toddler to keep up with. But will make it harder to drag excessive amounts of gear and all too. I am down with 12:30 at Dorton though if ya'll are.
