Quote : | "LONDON, England (AP) -- "Crazy" by U.S. duo Gnarls Barkley sat atop the British singles chart Monday -- the first track to reach No. 1 based solely on computer download sales.
The single by the pseudonymous Barkley -- U.S. producer Danger Mouse and hip-hop artist Cee-Lo -- went on sale in record stores Monday. But it had already sold 31,000 copies through the Internet, making it the previous week's best-selling track.
Until recently, download sales could count toward a chart position only if the track also was available in stores.
But the Official U.K. Charts Company, which oversees the British music charts, changed the rules to make online tunes eligible as long as hard copies go on sale in stores within a week.
While sales of traditional singles are declining around the world, online music sales are soaring.
Last week, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said global sales of digital music generated revenues of US$1.1 billion (euro911 million) for record companies last year, almost triple the 2004 figure, with single-song downloads making up most of the sales" |

Quote : | "Gnarls Barkley- "St. Elsewhere"
You know what? "Back Like That" gets better and better as the year goes on. Ghostface is one of three guys I can think of off the top of my head whose album reviews always try to make some sort of prognostication about how well it's gonna do commercially. It's like, "dude is soooo talented. Why can't people buy his stuff?" Well, "Fishscale" took a pretty predictable second-week dive after moving 111K or something, it's probably going to outsell "Pretty Toney" and "Bulletproof Wallets" and end up on a gang of Best Of 2006 lists. And "Back Like That" is a little glossy, but it fits in just fine with other olive branches to radio such as "Cherchez La Ghost" and especially "Never Be The Same Again."
Despite being the most straight-forward song on "Fishscale," it gets better and better in light of what the other two guys I alluded to above have done. Bubba Sparxxx released "Ms. New Booty," which was quite the conversation piece at my impromptu, belated, non-denominational seder of this past Sunday. Yeah, the matzoh ball soup, charoset, orange-sauced chicken. I'm over the stove like Cuban Linx, homie. But as I've said before, that song makes me hate life just a little.
And then there's Cee-Lo, who along with Danger Mouse has released the most bullshit album you're probably gonna hear in 2006. It's not the worst album you're probably gonna hear, but the most bullshit, i.e., insincere, media-driven drivel. I'm saying this in advance, because not only is this likely to get the M.I.A. treatment from the credocracy, it's probably gonna sell like a motherfucker since "Crazy" is apparently the new "Hey Ya!" Shit like this is probably to be expected from Danger Mouse, who I've never cared for. Look at his track record: the dude makes fucking cartoon music. And since "Benzi Box" was by far the worst song on "DangerDoom," I wasn't particularly looking forward to this album, not without MF Doom along for the ride.
But Cee-Lo...why you gotta go and do me like that? I'd be pissed off too if I was you; it should be a crime that UGK are given more regard in terms of southern rap than Goodie Mob. Really, anything to get that shermhead Pimp C back in jail. And it sucks that "Cee-Lo Green Is The Soul Machine" tanked. After all, it was pretty much the best case scenario for "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below," even if some of that quiet storm shit prevented it from being a classic. Look at all the guest spots on it: Timbaland, Neptunes, Jazze Pha, Ludacris, T.I., DJ Premier, and a bunch of other dudes I'm probably forgetting. I imagine more cash got pumped into that album than your daughter's shindig on "My Super Sweet 16."
The ironic thing was that on the most gripping parts of "Soul Machine," Cee-Lo figures that he'll never be able to move units unless he becomes a thug rapper (which might explain the somewhat ironic inclusion of tracks like "Scrap Metal" or "Glockapella"). But he's gone in the complete opposite direction here; don't let anybody tell you that this is a hip-hop album. In fact, it's a shitty alt-pop album that will likely find itself in the stereo at parties where people want something a little more fun-kay than "Crash" or "Supernatural." "St. Elsewhere" is almost zen-like in its nothingness. It's a pretty meager album on its face, clocking in at 11 songs and 37 minutes, pretty much devoid of any hooks or ill lyrics (yes, Cee-Lo is in full-on "lovechild of Macy Gray and Al Green" mode here). DM's beats (they can't really be considered hip-hop, but we'll just use "beats") sound exactly like that ADD shit he pulled on "Demon Days," and at worst, it sounds like Moby. This shit will have the shelf life of a fruit fly.
But the real story of the record is how it's pretty much the sum of a bunch of meaningless pop-culture signifiers that will carry the day for it. First off, there's that group and album name. And let's be honest: Gnarls Barkely is really fucking stupid name. Did they learn anything from Pearl Jam? Add on song titles like "Go Go Gadget Gospel," their Clockwork Orange-inspired press kits, and oh yeah, they cover the Violent Femmes. Very faithfully, at that (it's "Gone Daddy Gone" if you're interested). This is the kind of name-dropping people do to raise the presumption that they're cultured, in the same way that people think that the mention of Fresca or George W. Bush raises the presumption that they're about to say something funny.
And then there's the matter of the lyrics, which confirm the fact that far more work went into the development of Gnarls Barkley's image than the music. God, I think about all the knowledge Cee-Lo dropped on "Still Standing" and "Soul Food" and can't believe some of the shit he tries to pull here. Don't get it fucked up: these are lyrics that are lazer-guided to appeal to alternative kids. Shit like "it's deep how you're so shallow," songs about nightclubbing-as-necrophilia, rewrites of "Monster Mash" and contemplation of suicide. Okay, I know his rep took a hit when his daughter absolutely owned his ass on "My Super Sweet 16," but I don't believe for one minute that Cee-Lo has thought about killing himself. And I guarantee people will point to "Just A Thought" when talking about how resonant this album is, and why can't more rap artists (read: black people) come up with stuff like this? It's just a minor variation ol' tremendous upside/great hustle racial dichotomy that's been drilled in our heads since the first Mel Kiper article went up.
In essence, I just wish Cee-Lo would remember the time when he said "a wise man knows his limitations." " |
