I have been looking at buying a classic mini, but several of the ones i have seen that i like are right-hand drive. They're here in the states and registered, titled, etc. Just wondering if anyone knows about NC laws on classic right-hand drive vehicles. I imagine I could register it without much trouble, but i dont want to deal with getting hassled while driving it around, getting it inspected, etc.

Thanks!

it is a known fact that right hand drive vehicles are mechanically very different than standard, left-hand drive vehicles, there are no shared parts....electrical, braking, steering, drivetrain, emmisions.....all different

also, all of your common inspection points will be failed because the entire platform is completely foreign to NC inspection procedures

If i'm not mistaken the mail trucks are just customized. They are not true right hand drive cars.

RHD vehicles are NOT LEGAL in the US

DO NOT BUY IT

it is a scam, they are gonna send the money to nigeria to fund terrorism

and you will be locked up for engaging in an illegal transaction

what do you mean by "mail truck?"

If you mean the little trucks that say US Postal Service, they are built that way.

If you mean the private vehicles (could be anything) that some mail people drive around then some are customized, some are made that way. Jeep and Saturn used to run limited production special order for mail carriers in which the vehicles were right hand drive from the factory. There are other kits that can be installed on certain makes to make them have a steering wheel on both sides of the car.

but to answer the original question: They are completely legal and you shouldn't get hastled for it, people might just give you a funny look.

how is this a known fact? where do you "know" this from?
if he is buying a "classic" mini, i would assume it would be old enough to not worry about emissions
i know that my car shares a great deal of electrical components with it's rhd counterpart, and the a/c and heater assemblies are just mirrored copys. I am pretty sure the brakes are the same as well.

how old is the mini?

it probably doesn't have to pass inspection anyway

and i think the street legal skylines are still rhd or atleast most of them.

parts of that statement are true
especially if it's not an older car

inspection points such as reflectors in headlights and tail lights which are not requred overseas

you suck at sarcasm

I thought the celica GT4 was the only AWD celica (and they were all RHD too)

I have a RHD car, no trouble getting it registered or inspected - but that's b/c its an older car.

On a side note: today in chem class some people were telling me that RHD cars have the clutch on the right foot lol.

all-trac = GT4

I'm not sure, but I figure all-trac refers to the older flip-up headlights-generation AWD celicas and GT4 refers to the double bugeye-generation AWD celicas

Yeah, I'm not sure. I have a model in my room of the flip up headlights and the box said GT4. Who knows... it's not like they were ever imported anyways. (Plus a ka-t could take em hehe j/k)

thanks for all the input. I'll definitely run by the DMV and probably talk to the local police about it before actually buying. It'll be a couple of months before i buy anyway. I just thought someone on here might have dealt with this before. Thanks!

I don't see any reason why they'd be illegal. I know I've seen RHD vehicles on the streets on rare occasions.

If you try to take it somewhere like Jiffy Lube for an inspection they might give you a hard time though.

Where are you looking to buy the mini? I saw one down here in SC for sale on the Auto Trader when I was looking for my (New) mini. I thought about getting it, looked like a pretty nice one, but they wanted more than I wanted to spend on an old car at the time.

You know, some mail trucks are RHD vehicles... so go figure, unless they are breaking the laws. You know how law makers are, pass laws to make money

RHD cars are legal. A lot of people import them over here. It's not that they are right drivin, but many of them because they are directly imported do not pass emisssions and other aspects of laws. but it has nothing to do with the which side you drive on.

I've seen this mini at some races. You can make out a recent inspection sticker in the front window:
