Solve the following questions correct to 3 decimal places. There are 3 men and 5 women are on a committee. Beth is one of the women. Two of the 8 people are to be chosen to serve as officers. If the officers are chosen randomly,

What is the probability that both officers will be women?

What is the probability at least one officer will be a woman?

What is the probability that both officers will be women given that at least one is a woman?

What is the probability both officers are women if you know that Beth is an officer?

ok, i actually figured that one out, but what about this one:


Gateway and Micron are computer stocks that frequently move together because they represent the same sector of the economy. During a 25 day period, the value of Gateway stock went up 17 days. On 10 of these 17 days, the value of Micron stock also went up.

On the 8 days when Gateway stock did not go up, Micron stock went up on 2 of these days.

Turn all these fractions into probabilities and put all the info into a tree diagram. (For example 17/25 is the probability that Gateway stock goes up, so 8/25 is the probability that it doesn't go up. And 10/17 is the conditional probability that Micron goes up if Gateway goes up, etc.)

Based on the tree answer the following questions.

What is the probability both stocks go up?

What is the probability neither stock goes up?

If Gateway goes up, what is the conditional probability Micron goes up?

If Micron goes up, what is the conditional probability Gateway goes up?

If Micron does not go up, what is the conditional probability Gateway will go up?

i'll show you how to do the first one so you get the gist of it.

What is the probability that both officers will be women?

there are five women so you want to choose two from this five. There are three men so you want to choose zero from this three. There are eight individuals overrall from which you are choosing two.
What you are basically doing is,

((5 choose 2) X (3 choose 0)) / (8 choose 2)

that should help you get started.

Since you asked for someone to solve another problem for you just last week, I am going to make a serious suggestion. Go talk to your teacher or TA and get help from them. It's only going to get worse for you.

Sure, if someone tells you how to solve it you'll be like "oh yeah, I see now". But your not learning how to solve problems on your own, and I don't think you have time to query TWW during an exam.

10 of these days both go up
7 of these days Gateway goes up, Micron goes down
2 of these days Micron goes up, Gateway goes down
6 days both bitches go down

Both go up: 10/25 = 2/5
Both go down: 6/25
Conditional: 10/17
Conditional: 10/12 = 5/6
Conditional: 7/13

If you have to turn in your work, draw a Venn Diagram up in there. It's easy to organize the numbers and your teacher/TA will cream themself.

the main thing i am having problems with is the conditional...

like in this problem:

Dell and Compaq are computer stocks that frequently move together because they represent the same sector of the economy. During a 25 day period, the value of Dell stock went up 15 days and the value of Compaq stock went up 11 days. Both stocks went up 8 days.

Turn all these fractions into probabilities. (For example, 15/25 is the probability Dell's stock value increases.) Put the information into a Venn diagram. Answer the following questions based on this data. On a random day,


what is the probability Compaq stock goes up in value?

what is the probability both stocks go up in value?

if Dell goes up, what is the conditional probability that Compaq goes up?

if Compaq goes up, what is the conditional probability that Dell goes up?

I got the first two parts right, they are 11/25 and 8/25, but I cant figure out how to set up the conditional

Do exactly what it says. If Dell goes up what is the conditional probablity that Compaq goes up. Your original denominator is all the days(25). The condition (If Dell goes up) changes the denominator to only the number of days that Dell indeed does go up. Then your numerator is the number of days Compaq and Dell went up. You cannot include the days Compaq goes up and Dell goes down because that disagrees with "If Dell goes up"

thanks alot man, my teacher is terrible, u are actually showin me the easiest way, which I can understand, but like I also have this problem, and Im trying to figure out how to break those up into their certain probabilities....can I use a venn diagram?

There are 6 married couples attending a party where two door prizes (the prizes are the same) are awarded to two different people. Solve to 3 decimal places.

What is the probability a married couple wins the prizes?
What is the probability one prize goes to a man and one to a woman?

If John's wife Mary wins a prize, what is the probability that John will also win a prize?

If Mary does not win a prize, then what is the probability that John will?

does (1/6 * 1/12 * 1/11) = (whatever that equals) work? for the married couples part?
