It's hard to say that either of them are the face of the franchise, when the only person you ever heard about on the team was Aaron Brooks.

any of you haters see that 44 yard run tonight? he outran the entire titans defense to the sideline. i dunno, he might not put up huge numbers this year because of the saints horrendous o-line, but there's no denying bush's talent.

haters!!!

hahaha, he looked like a flop, for sure! he also looked way too small to run against these huge, mean, tough nfl defensive players

seriously, sleik, as a fellow saints fan you have to be pretty excited to have him on the team this year. yeah, the saints need o-line and defensive help, but it's not like teams were giving them any great offers to allow them to move down in the draft to address those needs at reasonable picks. he signed before the first preseason game, is playing hard, and hasn't been a jackass off the field. why no love?

^^^^ I'm excited, spooner, but tempered enthusiasm is grossly underrated.

I'm over the fact that we won't have addressed any of the major needs now. Now I'm working on the nutjobs who seem to believe that Reggie Bush:

1) can sustain a full NFL load right now, in a 3-year college body
2) renders Deuce McAllister worthless
3) should just be given the starting job because of 1 & 2

It was a nice showing overall, but I'm not about to throw out names like Sanders and Sayers. I'm a firm believer in earning/justifying your hype and then sustaining a high performance level. LeBron James did it. Michael Vick hasn't. The jury is still out on Reggie Bush. One run in one preseason game isn't enough. He's going to have good games and not-so-good games, because everybody does. But I don't want to get trapped into making apologist statements when he has the bad games like Vick fans seem to do OR forgetting about everybody else when he has good ones - I'm a SAINTS fan, and I don't want our fanbase to draw any comparison to Flake-on fans.

I posted in a journal entry that he'd be a dud well before I knew that he'd be a Saint. I want him to do well BECAUSE he's a Saint, and I want that entry to be wrong. However, I doubt that he'll meet the lofty expectations set forth for him already, and that will lead to bust perceptions.

So like...a couple games into the season...when defenses realize Bush will only run to the outside and that he's scared to go up the middle...you think when they contain him and lay him some licks in the backfield he will injure something arm-related or leg-related? Anybody see Pacman Jones put that hit on him? Kinda a mutual hit...still if a defensive back who played in college two years ago can hit him that hard, I wonder how hard linebackers are gonna hit him?

he is going to get destroyed going around the outside by linebackers like Ray Lewis and Dan Morgan who can also run side to side

Pacman Jones is the worst tackler in the NFL, I have NEVER seen him actaully try to tackle someone. He always thinks he can just hit someone hard, and they should go down, which sometimes works with WRs, but everytime I see him do it to a big running back, they just breeze by him like it never happened, and he is left just standing there scratching his head.

I am stealing this entire post from a guy named MadBurgerMaker on another of my forums, he is a texans fan, but I think he hits the nail right on the head.

Quote :
"Since we're going by one preseason game, I highly doubt that. Bush had problems running up the middle, etc, averaging something like 3 yards a carry when asked to do something besides run around to the outside. He also failed to put points on the board (when he left, in the second quarter, they had 6 points). Hes not going to be able to carry an NFL team, and whatever team hes on will have to keep another "good" back on the roster to do the dirty work outside of the 15 carries Bush gets. Bush is fast, but damn...the kid needs to learn how to run between the tackles, or hes going to confirm his status as a glorified scat back who can also return kicks (not that I think he'll return many kicks, since he costs so damn much).

Vince Young had a not so stellar looking 1st game as well, completing...40% (if that?) of his passes against the New Orleans backups. The Texans couldnt afford to wait for VY to develop for a few years while paying both him and David Carr #1 money. If they hadnt resigned Carr to save some $$, they would be starting.....Sage Rosenfels? No...I dont think there will be any regrets there.

Out of the two (Bush and Young), Vince Young would fit into the Texans scheme the best. The offense is basically turning into a modified version of the Broncos, which means mobile quarterbacks are quite valuable, while running backs have to learn to take ONE CUT and hit the hole. Vince Young is mobile, of course, but theyd have to teach him to throw on those bootlegs instead of simply running every time. Reggie Bush's whole game is making people miss, running around the end, etc. That doesnt fly in a system like Houstons/Denvers.

Speaking of big money rookies, Mario Williams had a boring and forgettable 1st start as well, picking up a single assist in 11 plays. He got stood up a couple of times by Kyle Turley, etcetcetc. One thing I dont necessarily like is that theyre moving him all over the line, which is basically forcing him to learn four positions instead of one. Yes, mismatches are nice, but damn...let him learn his natural position first! Of course...you could look at how the defense as a whole fared against the Chiefs starters in those 11 plays....hm...lets see...ah yes....they gave up 36 yards of total offense. Against the Chiefs. Those 11 plays spanned the entire first quarter. Oh...hey...no points scored by the Chiefs either.

You cant directly compare the stats of defensive linemen to running backs and quarterbacks. That would be ridiculous. Does Michael Strahan suck because he only had 11.5 sacks and 81 tackles vs. Shaun Alexanders 27TDs and 1,880 rushing yards? It makes oh....zero...sense comparing those. DLs impact the defense quite a bit just by their presence...being double or triple teamed, which leaves other defenders unblocked. They can cause confusion on the line when they move around to the other end, again, helping the other defensive players. They can force teams to gameplan around them. They can put pressure on the QB without sacking him, causing a bad pass, etcetcetc. You know what sucks for these guys? None of those are stats or highlights that ESPN will ever show.

Here's some news for the Bush fanboys, and stats you CAN compare...The Texans 6th round draft pick, Wali Lundy, had 110 total yards on 9 carries (59 yds), 1 reception (9 yds), 1 kick return (30 yards), and one punt return (12yds). He also got himself a touchdown. This is a guy who is just trying to make the team, and was thrown in in the first quarter against KCs starting defense, after the "starter" (FA aquired this year, A. Smith) was ineffective. I put the word starter in quotes simply because neither Domanick Davis (#1 RB) and Vernand Morency (#2 RB) played.

Wait..more news...an undrafted free agent named Chris Taylor managed 79 total yards with 14 carries (55 yds) and one kick return (24 yds).

I think if you combine the contracts of Mario Williams, Wali Lundy, and Chris Taylor, youd probably still be below what New Orleans is paying Bush."

as long as bush is in the right situation he'll be great. if he always plays with a bruiser like mcallister, his stregnths will be featured, while his weaknesses are masked. If a team ever tries to stick him in a 1 back situation tho........

4^ he is kinda soft! You did see the way that pac-man touched his ass up near the side line, when Bush tried to bold him over in that Tenn game last week. And he's just a lil ole DB.

Reggie needs to learn when you have a hole for 4 yards, you take it. You can't turn every run out to the sideline against most NFL defenses. Every now and then the defense may overpursue, and Reggie Bush has the speed to break a 50 yard run like in the Titans game. Most of the time, you are trading a 4 yard gain for a 2 yard loss.

he wasn't an every down back @ USC either.....like said before, if he is used correctly he will be great......if not, not so good. Plus, he has bulked up substantially in the past 6 months, and he's got Deuce with him for now.......I bet he'll have around 1,000 all purpose yards this year.

nah, he'll only get around a dozen touches a game.....he'll be fresh all year.....and actually probably do better the 2nd half than the 1st half.
