If one's argument for pulling out of Iraq is the number of soldiers that have been killed, it is a weak argument. According to Antiwar.com, which is hardly a right-wing organization, the current number of American military deaths in Iraq since March 19, 2003, is 2,539. Remember, that number covers more than a three-year period. In addition, a significant percentage of these deaths were not a direct result of combat operations.

Consider this: In 2002 ALONE, according to RaceMatters.org--which again is definitely not a right-wing organization--a combined total of 2,846 people were murdered in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Washington. This is just six cities in one year, folks. So by the abovementioned cut-and-run logic, we should begin pulling out of these cities IMMEDIATELY!

One more thing: I am a veteran. I did a three-year, active-duty tour overseas in the US Army. I also did five years in the Ready Reserves. When I signed on the dotted line and took the solemn oath to defend the Constitution and its principles, I knew what it meant and I knew what could happen. And every man and woman who signed up in any branch of service knew, too. Shit, no one is being forced to join the military!

If you're legitimately against the war, I can respect that position. If you're just another generalizing, loud-mouthed liberal, then maybe you should look at the facts before you pop off.

i care about our soldiers dying. but i also care abotu the fact that this war is killing countless thousands more iraqis who DID NOT sign on a dotted line saying they'd die for America's whims to distract from a failing economy and a failing hunt for bin laden (fyi: estimates are around 40,000 civilians killed in this war). not to mention this war is costing us billions upon billions of dollars -- money that could be used for such better things.

maybe i'd be more for this war had it been managed more wisely in the beginning and people weren't still often without electricity and/or water.

this is not to say that i think that we should immediately pull out. we have gotten ourselves into a shitty situation because of poor leadership/management of a war that we shouldn't have fought to begin with. I'd be very stunned if iraq didn't erupt in civil war in the next five years (assuming we're not still there in a major way in five years).

War is an ugly business, sarijoul. I wish that it were not necessary, but sometimes it is.

Iraqis will see a better day. And when that day comes, the world--including France et al--will know that the United States of America did the right thing.

Oh, and the military planning and operations by the United States was and is not perfect, duh. As any person who has served in the military knows, no plan survives contact with the enemy. We will make adjustments and get it done. Outstanding!

I'd say boonedocks' criticism of your point is valid. You have to compare population ratios. If the 6 cities you mentioned have a combined population of 2 million you would expect there to be more deaths than if you compared it to a group with a population in the order of tens of thousands.

For Christ's sake, people, I'm comparing the MURDERS in about a handful of US cities in ONE YEAR (2002) to deaths due to combat in the WAR ZONE of a WHOLE COUNTRY over more than a THREE-YEAR PERIOD (2003-2006)! The US cities lose, because their NUMBER of deaths is higher.

If you cannot grasp the self-evident point, then I cannot wrap your mind around it for you.
